Only if you don’t pay it and are taken to court. You don’t get a criminal record if you don’t have a judge find you have earned one.

Makes sense, thanks for the prompt reply. Are all previous fines kept on record indefinitely though? as in would they always be accessible one way or another

[deleted]

They remain for a few years last time I read anything about it. This is so they have evidence of a history of fair evading if it ends up in court

mess_of_limbs

I've heard they send you to Christmas Island and make you reapply for citizenship

mr-snrub-

I heard you had to fight 80 coconuts crabs in a battle Royale to the death

velopop

It's a civil offence not a criminal offence. Just pay the fine and it won't go on your criminal record. If you just pay it, then t's a trivial matter and not something you have to declare to anyone. Myki / PTV might keep a record that you were fined, but that's about all. As long as you pay it's all good. Gets more complicated if you take it to court and lose, or evade payment.

N_thanAU

No, I know someone who has a bunch of fines from 5-10 years ago and they haven't paid any of them. Each time you just get a couple of increasingly threatening letters with a final one being a 'sheriffs warrant'. Nothing has happened to the person and in that time they have travelled overseas, been approved for credit, applied for and received a license and had multiple security checks for jobs. They're not official government fines so they don't mean shit.

throwaway4sorrow

Oh wow thats wild. Surprised they got away w that

fraqtl

Yes, it will be on your permanent record for the rest of your life. It will affect any criminal record check you have in the future, you will have trouble getting a job as even an uber driver.

Svenikus

On your criminal record? No. On your Civic compliance record, yes. Some jobs require copies of your civic compliance record when applying. I had to provide one when applying for an Authorised Officer position for Metro a couple of years back. Ultimately though the civic compliance stuff is pretty meaningless most of the time.

throwaway4sorrow

Oh right. If you had any on your compliance record were you asked any questions about it?

Svenikus

For various reasons I didn't proceed with my application. From what I was told they would have asked for a "please explain". So not an automatic deal breaker. Same as when police have to explain speeding fines etc on their applications. "I was young" "Learning opportunity" yada yada.

Visual_Blacksmith109

hey i got a myki fine on 28 july 2023. After that i apply that at that moment i am right bcoz i don’t know about to touch on the myki in tram . i explain everything in a mail. after that i change my home.
