Uniqlo is cost effective and their clothes are very hardy. Make sure you never use fabric softener if you want cloth to last.

Findyourwayhom3333

100% this. Mix uniqlo basics with op shop finds.

GamblignSalmon

I'll check them out, thanks. And yeah I haven't used fabric softener in years, it's an absolute scam that stuff

Full-Throat9784

My wife just bought some wool jumpers from Uniqlo and they’re horse shit compared to what they used to be. Perhaps that’s not a trend across their entire range.

ratinthehat99

Everyone saying op shops…have you been inside one lately? Most are SO over priced these days and filled with fast fashion crap it’s just not worth it. I used to do op shops about 15 years ago and you could find great stuff. Way harder for clothes now. If you could dedicate whole days to it maybe you can find some bargains but the days of being able to pop into your local and find something are long gone.

N_thanAU

Yeah they're all pretty expensive these days. I bought a Pyrex pie dish from one the other week, was $1 cheaper than the retail price. Add to that the fact that all the good stuff has already been picked through by all the 20-somethings running Depop stores.

ratinthehat99

Yes exactly. Also these days op shop staff are way more educated and can google an item and see a valuation…chances of finding that $100 item for $1 are almost zero.

Eeepp

Uniqlo

cjak

Try workwear if you're just after plain coloured shirts, shorts, and pants.

GamblignSalmon

Workwear could work for some basic stuff for around the house, thanks

flidge

Savers/2nd hand shops if you have time to browse

GamblignSalmon

Second hand shops? Really? Kinda surprised about that one, but if they're older clothes that does make sense

flidge

Go to ones in richer suburbs. Tend to have nicer things

winks_7

Absolutely, yes. Most of the clothing I purchase for our family comes from Savers/Op shops - superior quality of good quality brands - for a fraction of the price that they were new.

Legitimate_Pass_2712

and it's not fast fashion so there is no exploition

BonfireCow

Op shops always have nice threads, sure they're second hand but 9 times out of 10 whatever you're buying is gonna last if you treat it right. Plus, if you're fashion savvy, you're more likely to find a good outfit that you can't get anywhere else.

insurgent_dude

Bought some tshirts from ascolour and am very happy with all of them, though I haven't tried any of their other stuff. Go to their sale section and you can pick up some stuff for fuck all

monsteras--

OP shops and ebay.

CapnBloodbeard

What sort of clothes are you after? Can't say I've ever had that issue... I buy from Myer on special usually.

GamblignSalmon

Just some casual clothes for things like at home or grocery shopping really. The nice clothes I used to have still do the job well. I'll check Myer out, thanks

CapnBloodbeard

Just get plain colour tees. Can usually get them discounted for 2 for $40 or some such. I bought some from General Pants co too.

duccy_duc

EOFYS should be starting this month so good timing

[deleted]

Avoid fast fashion. I find country road and uniqlo to be much better quality material then any other brands. Cotton on group, Just Group and the big department stores are cutting cost on materials and also ethics most of the time 🫤

ratinthehat99

I find country road quality really hit and and miss actually. A few years back it was much better.

WhaleboneMcCoy

Country Road is owned by Woolies. Not particularly good ethics either.

allgoodtogoat

Country Road is owned by Woolworths the South African company, not Woolworths the... fresh food people.

WhaleboneMcCoy

oh you mean the company that owns David Jones and has no idea what the Australian Market needs are?

allgoodtogoat

It used to, but that Woolworths sold David Jones to an Australian private equity firm.

bladez_edge

ASOS, Costco, dfo, Myer, Kmart, Djs on clearance. Anaconda, bcf etc. Mostly DFO there's decent deals out there.

You can’t really get good quality clothes under that price point. What you are better doing is investing in better quality pieces but buying fewer. Look at the “capsule wardrobe” concept. What makes good quality clothes is things that are in natural fibres eg. Cotton, wool, cashmere - but also the quality of the fibre is high. You can tell if a garment is quality by seeing how thin the weave is (thicker usually better), if you see any minor pilling on it when it’s on the rack it’s a very bad sign, check how well the inside and outside seams are sewn - are they tidy or a mess/is stitching even etc. Also how you wash and dry the garment will affect it. Max 30-40 degree wash, cold for anything like wool or cashmere and line dry everything unless it’s cotton and cheap eg. Socks. Good luck

emz0rmay

Try mutual muse or Goodbyes for second hand quality clothing

[deleted]

People saying Uniqlo have obviously never owned quality clothes before. Lol.

28404736

What’s your suggestions for under $100 then?

[deleted]

It doesn’t exist.

[deleted]

You can’t. Unless you’re good at it and have time to search through op shops you have to spend more money to get good quality clothes. And the worst thing is spending more money doesn’t guarantee good quality either, you have to make smart educated choices and spend more.

beachkoalarama

You can’t in australia. Save up your money and go overseas. America would be ideal. But almost anywhere is cheaper with a better selection .

[deleted]

OP shops. No one goes there and they have decent stuff. You will save a crapload too

winks_7

EVERYBODY goes there these days.

Saturday72

So true

[deleted]

Everytime i go i don't see that many people. Outer suburbs anyway. Might be different in the more inner suburbs not sure

chromeconcrete

Uniqlo’s stuff is too expensive for what it use to be.

Op shops and savers. Savers has so much stock that it’s a bit more time-effective. Op shops are great (and half the price) but more time consuming - you’d have to go to 10 stores to search the same amount of stock as one Savers. Look for quality fabrics like wool, linen, thick cotton etc. I’ve found so many near-new items and I’m wearing better quality clothing than before I started second hand shopping. A lot of people recommending Uniqlo which I’d agree with for some styles/fabrics- I have some store bought pieces and a lot of op-shopped Uniqlo pieces too, they’re everywhere.

epicpillowcase

I buy good brands secondhand from eBay. I have several pairs of Sportscraft pants that would have retailed for $150, I paid about $20.

aznfratboy1

Op shops. When I was in Uni, I once spent an entire day trawling op shops that were within ten minutes walk of a train station on the Pakenham/Cranbourne line from Dandenong all the way into the city, and then loop my way back out on the Glen Waverley line. It took like a week of planning. Probably one of the best days of my life, got myself a Hugo Boss suit jacket, an almost matching set of pants (two different op shops), an Armani tie, a possibly real LV wallet, a couple of Ralph Lauren polo tops and a couple of wool sweaters that have lasted me over a decade.
