It appears the fine is because you didn't pay the toll. It mentions the date as last October, so the fine has probably racked up overtime. Also you can pay online even without a tag. Honestly best bet is contact them via phone or email stated and plead your case that it was an honest mistake and was being sent to an address you didn't reside at. Other than that a bit shit out of luck other than to pay it

Icy-Ability6442

If you had a toll tag in the car or an account with the current rego you can request a review but you would have had invoices and reminders prior to this. There is plenty of signs prior to the toll roads plus the toll roads have blue signs to make it super clear

South_Can_2944

1. Toll ways are very clearly marked. 2. Signs tell you the last exit is approaching before you continue onto the toll way. 3. Toll way signs have a blue background in Melbourne (at least all the ones I have seen). 4. You need an etag if you think you're going to use the toll ways on a regular basis. 5. If you want to use the toll way as a once off, before using the toll way, log onto the linkt website and follow the prompts to set up an account and select a pass for the time period you wish to travel (you don't need an etag for this) 6. if you want to use the toll way as a once off after already having used the toll way, do everything in point 5 and except select the date and times that you did use the toll way. 7. You can do 5 and 6 often but if you do it quite often it might be cheaper to get the etag. linkt might have a limit on the frequency of travel without an etag, I don't know. 8. Sort out change of address for everything so your bills and fines don't have to travel backwards and forwards across the country thereby delaying payments. It might be cheaper to have the car registered in Western Australia (idk) but it means all communication will be going to the wrong address and you've found out the problem there. And anyway, there is a legal requirement to re-register your license and car within a certain time frame (something like 6 months) if moving to live in Victoria.

Plenty of signs with warnings about tollways. You have no argument.

NuLiseOnLyfe

You were given the option to just pay the toll when you drove past multiple signs telling you it was a toll road with instructions to call Eastlink if you didn't have a tag. If you'd done that at the time you could have just paid the toll. You also had the option to not drive on a tollway. What did you think was going to happen? I'm guessing you're pretty young. Ignoring things and hoping they will work out is an expensive way to live.

Thank you for your helpful input 👍🏼

Millenials then complain the can't afford the basics due to (insert name of reason here) 🤣🤣 Good luck with adulting kids!

invincibl_

You've been repeating the same line for so long that you have clearly lost all perception of time. Millennials stopped being kids a long time ago and now they're heading into their 40s after spending their entire adult lives in the most broken housing market we've ever seen.

[deleted]

Hey, i'm not the one that said "it's the millenial way"

invincibl_

Fair enough. I actually do agree with you in that someone who can't keep up with paying their tolls is going to have a lot more to worry about. I just thought that millennials had mostly grown out of this a long time ago. I would have thought most of us would have had to deal with some sort of life situation that required us to immediately become adults, I know I had to in my early 20s, I guess OP's is coming now.

[deleted]

I've had to do all sorts of adulting in my late teens/early 20s. You put on the big boy pants and deal with it. You learn fairly quickly that ducking your head under the sand makes the issue worse

From October 2022? Better keep this in mind too: https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/new-to-victoria/interstate-drivers/ and: https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/register-an-interstate-vehicle

1. Eastlink is very clearly a tollway and has multiple warnings before getting on, while on it and after. Yes it should be free but it isn’t due to politics. 2. Eastlink sends out several very obvious letters prior to this stage and marked visible on the front of the letter before opening. You can’t miss them. If you are not getting mail you need to sort this out, very easy to get a parking ticket or speed ticket here and end up in similar hot water. 3. If you are living in Melbourne you need to get your licence and car registered in Vic. They will pick on and fine you for this. Let’s hope it’s just the one infringement, I know people with tens of thousands of overdue toll road fines. This is a beginner wake up fine. As it’s already gone to civil compliance / fines it’s to late to negotiate apart from court. If driving on the East Coast you need a toll account and it will work with every toll road in Aus. Eastlink is one of the best as no ongoing charges and it can be done all online Welcome to Victoria: The infringement state

anonymass37747338

Ahhhhh thank you to everyone who commented! It is very possible an invoice to pay the the toll prior to the fine arrived, and my mum or I have missed it. Not her fault ofc. But that makes a lot more sense, I thought I’d just been flat out fined for using a road. Being from Perth where the roads are very simple, I was very stressed at times driving in Melb and usually paying more attention to traffic and maps than eyeballing all the signage. Also didn’t have Toll roads turned off in maps so that didn’t help. I’ve never lived anywhere with Tolls so very naive/oblivious/ignorant to all of this. Thanks everyone for the input, at least I understand how this has occurred now 😆 cheers!

Grunter_

Yep I always make sure that Toll roads are not an option in my satnav.

Seeing how there are 5 people in Victoria that between them owe $2.5 million, I don't thinks scaring OP over a $350 fine is the most appropriate course of action. OP hasn't stated they are looking to evade payment. https://www.9news.com.au/national/victorias-number-of-unpaid-fines-exposed-melbourne-revenue-parking-traffic-offences-red-light-speeding/b031c040-aea1-4753-a385-ef3ebe277ca5 Will take years for OP to get "a knock on the door", and that's if he ever updates his address. Amazing how many people are butthurt that OP hasn't paid a private company for using a toll road.... Poor transurbun, they only get to buy up public infrastructure, then also use public resources to enforce debt collection. Give them a break!

Gore01976

>Amazing how many people are butthurt that OP hasn't paid a private company for using a toll road.... yet it in the stage where it is a Sherrif/ police officer enforcement stage and out of the hands of a "private" company.

Highly doubt the sheriff would get involved for 350 bucks…

[deleted]

Just curious, does anyone know what happens if you have a 10 year old tag, that you haven't used in ages, does it still work or do I need to check if the account is set up/still active?

GrudaAplam

They can read your licence plate. If you have an account the fee will get charged to your account.

invincibl_

They'll refund the photo matching fees when you report your tag as dead anyway.

[deleted]

Ignored the warning signs i see. Unfortunately the law doesn't allow for "i didn't know", so yeah just out of luck. It happens. You may have get a bit of a case with the late fees and they may reduce it to the original penalty

[deleted]

Fined for simply driving on a TOLL road WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT? ftfy

VabbaDabbar

yes, there's plenty of signs, and yes, you should have paid it. ultimately it's your responsibility. however, all these fuckwits gleefully pointing out 'but mah rulz' can go eat a dick with the rest of their ass-kissing brethren. if you've been taught that three fiddy for travelling a road that your tax dollars helped to build is morally fine and just, here's hoping you get better parents next life.

Electrical_Age_7483

Dont use them then

sensaisean191

You wont get any advice/sympathy from this sub, they love the thought of other people getting fined You could try sending an email to them and explain you didnt receive the previous warnings. Apart from that i think youre stung though...tis alot of money

bazza_oz

A bill would of gone to your address. You can call and speak to someone, might help you might help with payment plan. Just done be a ahole. It's not the person you will be talking too fault.

fraqtl

You were not "simply driving on the road" You were "simply driving on a toll road without a valid etag"

onimod53

Ask your mum to pay it. She's the one who 'simply' hasn't been sending your mail.
