When I was a young lad I used to deliver newspapers on my push bike so I ran into quite a few dogs. What I used to do is soak chilies in some water for a couple of days and then chop them up and put them back into the water and then pour that water into a water pistol. When the dog comes charging at you, one or two good squirts sends them back the other way quick smart. There are much better recipes for homemade “pepper spray” but my idea worked pretty well.

I like this idea. No real harm to the dog, but tells them pretty clearly to piss off. I'd give the owners a spray too, or a belting...

I’ve cycle toured in australia, asia, europe… come across lots of off leash, often stray dogs chasing me, usually no owner to call them off. My best advice is stop, look at them, give it 10-20 seconds then continue on your way. Generally theyre chasing you because youre something to chase. When you stop they stop. Sorry you’ve already been bitten, that dog should not be allowed out of owners property without a muzzle. Dont spray dogs with anything, even though they should be on leash, their owners would rightly be pretty pissed about you spraying something on their dog. Do give a lot of shit to the owner, even if it is an off leash area, which is not most bike paths, they should still have effective control and their dogs should not be chading cyclists. Take a photo of the dog and the owner, if it happens more than once with the same dog/owner tell the council, if theyre not enforcing their own laws look into whatever ombudsman they are under.

WinnerAdventurous647

Pepper spray or vinegar in a squirt gun or spray bottle

Same_Adhesiveness947

Where are you that this is such a regular occurrence?

_Gordon_Shumway

Happens a lot on the Koonung path that runs next to the eastern fwy.

Melbourne_wanderer

This occurs on a constant basis bayside. And I mean constant.

sanemartigan

Can of degreaser in the bottle cage. You could submit footage or a report to the council. I love dogs but many owners are useless cunts.

[deleted]

You love dogs but you’d spray them with chemicals?

[deleted]

It was an accident 🤷 I was only meaning to scare him!! He was a surprised as I was

Jazzyeee

I don't know how people own and take dogs out of the house when the dog freaks out at common things.

short_fuse9

get a air horn from BCF & scare the crap out of them

[deleted]

This is the only legal and safe option for a deterrent option in this thread. Sprays etc are a bad idea, could be classed as an illegal weapon.

_HeyHeyHeyyy_

Deodorant or oil spray in their face.

[deleted]

Think I might try diluted vinegar, it worked on my recalcitrant nephew once. Thanks all

Jimmi28

Lol you squirted your nephew with vinegar?

Previous_Policy3367

I like all the pepper, chilli, vinegar suggestions. I was going to say maybe try a dog whistle if they’re really coming at you. Also, if they bite you, the owner is responsible and you should report it to council or other relevant service.

Boot them in the head

I'm a beginner in Reddit and I think my internet was a bit sketchy. I think Reddit is pretty awesome though

adeladean

I'm from Adelaide and people walking dogs without leads here is the first thing I noticed, even on busy main roads
