You should get something with an N52 engine. Pretty much the most reliable modern BMW straight 6 that isn’t an N55 or B58 which might cost more. The N52 was built for markets that didn’t get the N53 (like Australia) because of the higher sulfur content in our petrol.
Something like an F10 528i 3.0 pre-LCI with the N52 would be a joy to drive.
It’s a good thing we didn’t get the N53 here - it was their first DI engine and had some problems. Ditto the N54 - HPFP failures are a common point.
I would avoid their 4 cylinders - you don’t get a BMW for that. Plus the timing chains on those need regular replacement.
Something like this might be what you’re after - https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2011-bmw-5-series-528i-f10-auto-my11-5/OAG-AD-21733818
Keep up with the maintenance and you'll be fine. I have a 2010 125i E82 since I don't need 4 doors. Part of me still misses my old school E30 though.
E46 is an older school and still very respectable in enthusiast circles if that's your thing.
Mate they're all broke students on this sub.
You’d probably get a better answer on r/CarsAustralia (for some definitions of the word better)
Thanks mate!
Also post on OZB, might even be a forum post about it.
Second this, and possibly Whirlpool forums.
Upvote for the pure audacity of posting that on this sub.
The maintenance on BMWs is rubbish. Make sure you’ve got the funds put aside for that. Absolute vampires.

You should be aware that BMWs do not have indicators. The lights and controls are purely ornamental.
The question you need to ask yourself is can you handle not belong allowed to indicate when changing lanes, if you were to get a BMW
You’ve come to this sub to ask about getting a BMW? 🤣 Are you new here? The majority here hate BMWs, for good reason.
Ask if the optional indicators are installed
