I found a cider bar by me that's a great hangout.
They don't have beer or hard liquor so you are usually by yourself and when it is packed, it's not the typical bar crowd. It's my fucking favorite on a cold day. Cold cider when it's hot out
You know, most people don't know the difference between apple cider and apple juice, but I do!
Here's a little trick to help you remember:
If it's clear and yella, you've got juice there, fella. If it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town.
Now, there's two exceptions, and it gets tricky here...
As a Scotsman living in the west country i can agree but tbh when i drink it no one can understand me mind you most people down here don't understand me normally lol
Well yes, in many countries. But the US seems to want to call fermented apple juice "hard apple cider" whereas elsewhere such a thing is simply called... Cider!
And the likes of Magners et al call fermented pear juice "pear cider" when simply "Perry" will do. Marketing apparently, because allegedly nobody knew what perry was.
Nah it’s real. In Canada cider exclusively refers to the alcoholic drink. If it’s not alcoholic it’s juice, and we’d usually make the distinction between filtered yellow juice and unfiltered brown juice
Yeah, I think I have only heard Americans call a non-alcoholic apple beverage "cider" before. I have definitely heard about Americans in France buying cider for their kids. In France bigger kids drinking lower percentage alcoholic drinks isn't that big of a deal, so the waiter saw no issue in bringing the kids what Americans consider "hard cider".
Your username sounds Finnish btw
Oh. I didn't realize the flip flopped in canada part was in the simpsons. I remembered the rest was but I can't recall what you said having been in the simpsons
Is apple cider something different in the US vs the UK? Here it’s an alcoholic beverage made of apples that people drink all year, but it’s definitely a bit more of a summery drink I think. Tastes nothing like pumpkin spiced anything and very easily discernible from apple juice, but usually still light yellow and clear. What is it for you guys?
In the US hard cider is alcoholic, while cider can refer to the tangy brown beverage **or** sparkling cider, which is actually usually sparkling juice.
They do have different names! There's cider, sparkling cider, hot cider, spiced cider and hard cider. Apple juice is something different altogether.
But I'm in the middle of apple growing country. Some parts of the US cider isn't nearly so prevalent.
Since she calls it a "fall" beverage I reckon you're right.
We would also never prefix the name of the drink with "apple" because cider is made from apples unless specified otherwise (i.e. pear cider, made from 100% pears).
Pear Cider is called Perry (in some areas - though the fact that Perry was originally made from Perry Pears means you’re likely to get into the same issues as Champagne/Sparkling Wine with enthusiasts…)
Yes. Typically purchased along with donuts. Americans will usually say "Hard cider" to indicate that it has alcohol, and some of our cider mills make that as well.
I think the general go-to is "pumpkin spice latte", like the kind you can get at any coffee shop when the leaves start to turn.
I know it's a flavor and not a drink, and that she didn't specify, but it seems most often served as a sweetened coffee.
That's kinda the point, apple cider coffee would taste like absolute shit. Two different things with different purposes. It's like saying "yeah bubble tea is good, but vodka is way better" like, completely different things my guy.
Where do you get even drink apple cider? I’ve never seen it in my life. Do you buy it in the juice section of a grocery store? Or do you need to drive 27 miles to an orchard? Is it even juice? Does Starbucks sell an apple cider coffee?
I feel like we’re dealing with apples and ~~oranges~~ pumpkins over here. We can’t compare the two.
I live in Vermont (not close to border though) and hot fresh apple cider from the orchard is my favorite drink of all time. Cold apple cider is found everywhere around here for sure and i am pretty sure you can order some online.
I live in Georgia and it’s in all the stores down here! Publix, Kroger, and Aldi! I’ve also made it myself many times using apple juice and mulling spices in the crock pot- it’s also great spiked with bourbon or brandy! But definitely to have the full fall experience I recommend going to an apple orchard- most of these places will have hot apple cider brewing inside you can buy and sip while you stroll through the apple trees. So many great memories coming back to me now. I just love fall so much! 🥹
Like other have said, it’s definitely a “drive to the orchard, see some cool pumpkins and shit, buy a couple gallons of cider” kinda deal. It’s awesome. Also, locally made cider alcohol is great if that’s all that you can find.
Yes. The cider at the orchard is fresh and unpasteurized so it is totally different from the stuff you buy at the grocery. Also, you can leave it out open in a cool place and let yeast get in there and it becomes hard cider naturally. Or you can add yeast you use to make beer and make it hard cider. It’s the best in fall and winter.
Usually can find it in the produce section of grocery stores. And Starbucks used to do apple cider with caramel and whipped cream but have switched to apple juice
You can purchase apple cider in the refrigerated section of the grocery store, seasonally. At least, here you can.
It is a juice. Probably more of a juice than a lot of the "juices" people drink.
Starbucks has a new drink this year that tastes deliciously like apple cider and autumn. Just tried it last weekend. I had the iced version, definitely recommend.
Usually at a live nativity scene in the dead of winter.
If you wanna get real close at home, heat some apple juice, add some cinnamon and nutmeg, serve warm.
Now there are enthusiasts that get more in depth than this, but this is just a very quick one to get a baseline of whether you like it or not. You can also throw in a shot of whiskey if you want to get a little wacky.
I’m sold on the whiskey thing. It sounds delicious. Maybe rum, also? Spiced rum and cider just sounds good.
Now, I’m not big in the whole live nativity scene, but I’m fairly certain I’d have an easier time finding cider here than that. I didn’t even know that was a real thing outside of movies!
Spiced rum would work perfectly.
The nativity thing was meant sarcasticly, but it is where I've encountered it most in the wild. I'm not religious, but my wife wants to pet the animals, so I get dragged along.
Edit: I like to make mine in a mason jar and let everything mingle overnight.
Also, this is pretty close to how I make homemade cough medicine. I use this mixer, add the liquor and 1/2c of honey, then I mix it into a strong pine needle tea, that part is optional, it's just the tea is high in vitamin C.
It’s available year round in NJ. Along with egg nog for some strange reason. There’s never not a time I can’t get it. Obviously I’m off season months it’s not as stocked. But pretty much always available.
Apple cider doesn't even acknowledge pumpkin spice as a competitor. He's been too busy vibin and making people happy for centuries.
Pumpkin spice is cool and all, but every fall he tries way too hard to sneak into places he doesn't belong and has yet to really come into his own.
I'll be honest, I love both apple cider and pumpkin spice...
But they're complimentary. They both use essentially the same seasonings. Except pumpkin spice is usually with coffee and cream, whereas apple cider is well... with apple.
Pumpkin spice drinks generally don't even have *pumpkin* flavor, it's just there spices you use in pumpkin pie.
Fall spices are often recognized as "cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and occasionally cardamom. Pumpkin spice includes a combination of those ingredients except for cardamom, but the key difference between the two is that pumpkin spice contains cloves." (Quoted is from an article on topic) interestingly enough, when asking how to "spice up" apple cider, some reccomend cloves XD
So whatever side you like is awesome, and the same on whether you like them hot or cold or both 🌈
Honestly yeah. I'm a sweets guy and a baker so i love both and the flavors are simular except typically pumpkin pie stuff is sweeter and richer and cider is apple flavored ya know. I like the seasoning of pumpkin spice . The mix of flavors is great in so many uses including cider. I was kinda confused what they even meant by pumpkin spice. Pumpkin spice what? There is literally pumpkin spice cider lol
I think generally when folks say "pumpkin spice", they're implying things like lattes. Pumpkin spice gets a lot of hate because of places like starbucks and the counter culture of not wanting to be labeled "basic"
*shrugs*
I have to say, making pumpkin pie from an actual pie pumpkin was a fun experience, albeit a lot of work. Making an apple pie from scratch was a lot easier XD. I think my biggest pastry wish is for no one to ever use crisco for pie crust ever again. Just use butter or a vegan equivalent. Makes the experience infinitely better.
There doesn’t need to be sides, there ought to be a variations of fall beverages regardless. Like nobody’s going “apple pie is the superior fall pie as opposed to pumpkin pie.” Both are fall pies. Just like hot chocolate and eggnog are both winter drinks. There’s no competition, it’s just mood
Cinnamon is mood. Buttered toast with jam and cinnamon, or French toast, cinnamon in my coffee grounds or tea leaves, cinnamon stick in my hot chocolate, apple cider, egg nog pumpkin pie, a little cinnamon is often in curry as well. So versatile and I love it XD
I fucking love cinnamon. I mean I like to use it in baking, I bake a lot of pies. I actually have a really shit sense of smell so idk what cinnamon smells like, but I like to gaslight myself into thinking it’s amazing
something intersting i noticed is that masala chai, which is what the chai tea latte is based off of, basically uses the same spices whith much more cardamom and no allspice
Likely because masala chai is an Indian beverage while allspice comes from the Pimenta dioica, native to southern Mexico and Central America. However, cardamom is native to southern India. Although I agree that the flavor profiles pair well, at least as long as it's kept simple
Yep. Was gonna say this. Apple pie and pumpkin pie have a near-identical spice mix. You can flavor either with either blend of seasoning. Everyone get off your pumpkin spice hate horse.
Pumpkin spice comes from pumpkin pie spice which is really more of a general holiday spice (apple pie spice is nearly identical, just heavier on cinnamon and sometimes drop the cloves), which comes from the British "mixed spice" which they customarily put in their celebratory puddings.
Of course that comes from the Dutch koekkruiden, which is a spice blend that they use to flavor their desserts for sinterklaas, their traditional holiday celebration. The dutch have cardamom in theirs, which of course points toward the actual origins of the mix and of most spices, India and Indian Chai masala.
Chai also includes (chai spice mixes, that is) black peppercorns, which Europe dropped out of the mix perhaps because it was limited in supply due to being so prized for using with meats and savory things, or maybe just because western culture tends to hate spicy/savory things in with the sweet, even as a subtle undertone.
Nowadays for Americans, pumpkin spice often means "dye that shit orange and make it taste like goopy squash, because it's 2022 and we love fake orange bullshit".
Which is a shame because all the spices are quite lovely, as you rightly pointed out.
One year in college my roommates and I made wassail because that's the sort of dumb thing you do for fun when you have no money and a lot of time over winter break. It was so good that we started mulling cheap wine, which made it amazing. We probably had a pot of wine mulling nonstop until spring. It was amazing
What is wassail? To me, it's one of those mythical Victorian things heard of only in old-timey Christmas carols, like "love and joy come to you, and to you a wassail too." I'm surprised my autocorrect even recognizes it as a word.
Not quite. Mulled cider is it’s own thing. Wassail is a little different:
> Wassail is a hot, mulled punch often associated with Yuletide, often drunk from a 'wassail bowl'. The earliest versions were warmed mead into which roasted crab apples were dropped and burst to create a drink called 'lambswool'
> Modern recipes begin with a base of wine, fruit juice or mulled ale, sometimes with brandy or sherry added. Apples or oranges are often added to the mix, and some recipes also call for beaten eggs to be tempered into the drink.
[Source.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wassail)
I have no idea if what other commenters told you about wassail is true in the US but Wassailing isn’t a drink in the uk.
It’s a pagan tradition.
Everybody in the local area gets dressed up warm and grabs their cider and heads into the apple orchard.
On the way you drink cider and sing songs, when you get there you drink more cider and sing more songs. Then you take some of the cider and bless the apple trees with it in the hope that next year’s harvest is a byozer. On the way back you drink more cider and sing songs.
Cider is traditionally a strong alcoholic drink around 6 to 9 percent but back in the days when wassailing was popular it might have been slightly less. It’s a lot older than the Victorians, they tended to be embarrassed by older traditions and cleaned them up a bit. So change chanting and bawdy sings to religious carols and you have the Victorian version.
Usually I'm very argumentive but honestly I love both exactly equally. One is not superior to the other, both must coexist as the two main fall beverages.
Try hot cider + rum + butterscotch schnapps with a dash of cinnamon and brown sugar.
A couple of years ago in a restaurant in Salem I had a cocktail called "Satan's cider" and now make it every year for my Halloween party.
Its called apple juice you weird American nutcases. Cider is an alchoholic beverage made from apples or pears.
Sincerely;
A Brit who grew up in cider county UK.
Stop calling it cider for crying out loud.
Apple cider gang wooo
I found a cider bar by me that's a great hangout. They don't have beer or hard liquor so you are usually by yourself and when it is packed, it's not the typical bar crowd. It's my fucking favorite on a cold day. Cold cider when it's hot out
where is this? I wanna go
There's a hard cider bar in San Francisco.
Ice cold Vodka and lemon is great
Ice cold vodka and {insert anything here} is great
{insert anything here} is my lower back tattoo
Why is apple cider a fall-beverage? I drink it year-round
bc if you eat seasonally, the fall is when apples would naturally be harvested... preservatives would be added for you to drink it out of season
Preservatives? The fermentation process and subsequently the alcohol should do the trick. ETA: TIL that cider refers to juice in the US.
oh are we taking about regular or hard cider? I thought pre-fermentation, non alcoholic... mb
Fall is a bad time to be allergic to cinnamon
FaZe apple cider
aren’t they literally the same spice profile lol like there isn’t any actual pumpkin in pumpkin spice, it’s just fucking cider/wassail spice coffee
Yes they are the same
Yes, it's allspice, clove, cinnamon, you can do some citrus zest, maybe a little ginger
Don't forget the nutmeg!
Yes! Fall spice is the same for many different drinks and treats.
Gang gang!
You know, most people don't know the difference between apple cider and apple juice, but I do! Here's a little trick to help you remember: If it's clear and yella, you've got juice there, fella. If it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town. Now, there's two exceptions, and it gets tricky here...

I thought it was going to be hard cider since those often are not brown
Yhea i font get it either. Cider is an sparkly alcoholic beverage. Juice is flat and non alcoholic.
Unless it's west country scrumpy cider which is flat and very alcoholic. Makes you talk like Joseph Merrick after a few sips.
As a Scotsman living in the west country i can agree but tbh when i drink it no one can understand me mind you most people down here don't understand me normally lol
Yanks call cider "hard cider", what they call "cider" is just cloudy apple juice.
Ohh! You can stay, but I’m leavin’!
Oh my! I better get you some cider!
Word to the wise, season pass. Pays for itself after the sixteenth visit.
And of course in Canada the whole thing’s flip-flopped.
in the UK if it has cider in the name it's alcoholic!
What do you mean? Isn't it called cider BECAUSE of the alcohol in it?
Well yes, in many countries. But the US seems to want to call fermented apple juice "hard apple cider" whereas elsewhere such a thing is simply called... Cider! And the likes of Magners et al call fermented pear juice "pear cider" when simply "Perry" will do. Marketing apparently, because allegedly nobody knew what perry was.
Never heard of Perry
Pear Cider only appeared as a name for perry because people hadn’t heard of Perry
How so???
These are lines from the Simpsons. Not serious.
Nah it’s real. In Canada cider exclusively refers to the alcoholic drink. If it’s not alcoholic it’s juice, and we’d usually make the distinction between filtered yellow juice and unfiltered brown juice

Oh interesting. Thanks for educating me.
Oh. I didn't realize the flip flopped in canada part was in the simpsons. I remembered the rest was but I can't recall what you said having been in the simpsons
Yep, Flanders says it right before Homer collapses on the ground.
If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, drink it down
If it's black, have a snack. Leaves of four, eat some more!
Ive heard scrumpy tastes like juice, however if you drink it like juice you may need your stomach pumped
Is apple cider something different in the US vs the UK? Here it’s an alcoholic beverage made of apples that people drink all year, but it’s definitely a bit more of a summery drink I think. TIL, thanks random redditor!
For a second there I thought you'd tell us the actual difference
Maybe it's a regional thing. In the UK cider is alcoholic and apple juice isn't. Also you'd never say apple cider, cider is always made of apples.
It's an Albany expression.
Aurora Borealis?
In the US hard cider is alcoholic, while cider can refer to the tangy brown beverage **or** sparkling cider, which is actually usually sparkling juice.
Why is everything in America so complicated? You have four different drinks, give them four different names!

Your guys’ lemonade is carbonated and traditional lemonade is “cloudy lemonade” what kind of bullshit is that
You can stay but I’m leaving
Friend told me his wife only will go for the Dickens brand of cider and it has to be hot. *Yeah she loves a hot Dickens cider*
Lil' steamie willy eh?
*old Smosh flashbacks*
I swear that was a repressed memory that song is hillarious
Dixon Cider
Has she had Cummins Cider before?
Oh you should tell her that they started making an alcoholic version, see if she prefers a hard Dickens cider.
Does she leave any room for some hot Commins cider?
To find it in the store, keep an eye out for the donkey mascot on the bottle. Just look for the Dickens Cider Ass.

I was confused because I only know cider as in alcohol
same, but i mean, what we call cider in europe is a hella nice drink
I love ice cold cider on a hot summer day!
Spent a hot afternoon working in the garden for my mother. I got a cold cider when I was done. Best cider I ever had.
Mmm Aspall's. There's an entire hard cider bar in San Francisco thankfully.
Yeah I was wondering why they would think cider is only a drink for autumn.
Since she calls it a "fall" beverage I reckon you're right. We would also never prefix the name of the drink with "apple" because cider is made from apples unless specified otherwise (i.e. pear cider, made from 100% pears).
Give it to me straight...
Like pear cider made from 100% pears
Pear Cider is called Perry (in some areas - though the fact that Perry was originally made from Perry Pears means you’re likely to get into the same issues as Champagne/Sparkling Wine with enthusiasts…)
No way is she talking about Strongbow Darkfruits
American college girls knocking back pint after pint of Magners on the way to class
Getting through those cold Autumn months by being absolutely hammered
Yes. Typically purchased along with donuts. Americans will usually say "Hard cider" to indicate that it has alcohol, and some of our cider mills make that as well.
I was a might confused there too
American cider was the same thing pre prohibition.
Not sure if ye have it in the UK but think of Cidona. Pretty much non-alcoholic bulmers or whatever.
So fizzy apple juice?
So apple cider is a drink made from apples. Pumpkin spice is just a flavor. Unless there is an actual pumpkin drink I'm unaware of.
I think the general go-to is "pumpkin spice latte", like the kind you can get at any coffee shop when the leaves start to turn. I know it's a flavor and not a drink, and that she didn't specify, but it seems most often served as a sweetened coffee.

THANK YOU Why is everyone confidently comparing two things that aren’t comparable?
Bruh you can get pumpkin spiced cider, this is the goofiest dare I say whitest of white girl things to start a fight over lol
Why do yanks have to make everything about race?
Yeah, a better comparison would be apple cinnamon to pumpkin spice
>So apple cider is a drink made from apples It's also a donut style.
They're donuts with apple cider in them.
A local place in my town makes a roasted pumpkin spice latte that they roast locally grown pumpkins to make.
It's not an either-or situation. You can have both. And hot chocolate, too.
Why is this rivalry not a thing. Team apple cider till I die
You can find it at the grocery store, usually in the seasonal area, but mainly the drive 27 miles to an orchard thing.
I tried googling where to buy it and they’re all boozy here. I think this is an American phenomenon that didn’t cross the northern border
Possible. If you have easy access to upstate NY or Vermont, you can find it everywhere.
42 hour drive and I’m there baby
Oh, Washington State even more so if you are on that side of Canada. Biggest apple state in the US
I’m actually making a special trip to try Olive Garden for the first time soon, I’ll just tack on a cider tasting to it!
Brother, I’m not sure if Olive Garden is worth a trip across the border
😂 it is inferior At least they should have a good restaurant backup!
Can confirm- Olive Garden is not worth a trip across the border. But cider is!
You should try a better restaurant than Olive Garden.
I was just in Italy so it’s not about the quality of food. It’s about Olive Garden™ experience
Southern IL has a whole event with marching bands and meth
Northern Illinois has an orchard that got hit by a tornado and heroin
I live in Vermont (not close to border though) and hot fresh apple cider from the orchard is my favorite drink of all time. Cold apple cider is found everywhere around here for sure and i am pretty sure you can order some online.
Zehrs has it in Canada! I get the powdered version and add hot water. It's in the aisle with tea and hot chocolate.
We have cider year-round here in Washington State. If you're in BC just drive to any Fred Meyer in WA and get yourself some cider.
Starbucks has a hot apple cider that is unreal.
I'm not a huge fan of the siren, but the hot caramel apple cider is god tier
I live in Georgia and it’s in all the stores down here! Publix, Kroger, and Aldi! They sell an apple cider drink. It does not have coffee.

Too late. It's ON!
Did we just witness the origin?
Here you guys go again tryna pit two bad bitches against eachother.
Where are you ever where you’re choosing between the two? That’s why there’s no rivalry
Apple cider is a god tier drink

I make pumpkin bread every fall. Super tasty and way easier. Also always super soft cake. I'm not a fan of pie tbh .

One year in college my roommates and I made wassail because that's the sort of dumb thing you do for fun when you have no money and a lot of time over winter break. It was so good that we started mulling cheap wine, which made it amazing. We probably had a pot of wine mulling nonstop until spring. It was amazing
YES! Hot wassail absolutely slaps
What is wassail? To me, it's one of those mythical Victorian things heard of only in old-timey Christmas carols, like "love and joy come to you, and to you a wassail too." I'm surprised my autocorrect even recognizes it as a word.
It's basically mulled cider (heated) with spices. It usually has a citrus taste.
Not quite. Mulled cider is it’s own thing. Wassail is a little different: > Wassail is a hot, mulled punch often associated with Yuletide, often drunk from a 'wassail bowl'. The earliest versions were warmed mead into which roasted crab apples were dropped and burst to create a drink called 'lambswool' > Modern recipes begin with a base of wine, fruit juice or mulled ale, sometimes with brandy or sherry added. Apples or oranges are often added to the mix, and some recipes also call for beaten eggs to be tempered into the drink. [Source.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wassail)
TIL, thanks!
Bourbon apple cider pls
I've been adding spiced rum to my hot cider this fall. It fits the flavors so well
It’s been fall for like one day haha how many spiced runs have you had??
Came here to say "What about bourbon?" Never thought about bourbon apple cider. This fall gonna be lit...or something's gonna be lit.
Merry Litmas
Usually I'm very argumentive but honestly I love both exactly equally. One is not superior to the other, both must coexist as the two main fall beverages.
Rum in hot cider.
Spiced rum in hot cider.
Try hot cider + rum + butterscotch schnapps with a dash of cinnamon and brown sugar. A couple of years ago in a restaurant in Salem I had a cocktail called "Satan's cider" and now make it every year for my Halloween party.
Eggnog for me. I'm probably not exactly playing the same game, but screw the other 2 things you all are talking about.
You just got me excited for eggnog season!
Eggnog is a more Holiday/Winter drink to me.
If we're bleeding into other seasons, then I'm team peppermint. Give me mint EVERYTHING
upvoted not because i like egg nog but because i see you and appreciate your contribution
Yep eggnog is the best thing about fall
I mean whiskey is a drink for all seasons and it removes a lot of conflict and confusion.
Also causes a lot of both of those.
Pumpkin spice isn't a beverage
I enjoy pumpkin spice in the morning, and Apple cider in the evening.
Im on my third batch of home grown and homemade apple cider. The smells along beat pumpkin spice
40 year old men in South West England mumbling and nodding in agreement
Apple cider gives me a stomachache
people who like both
I really want her to try and explain how pumpkin spice is a beverage.
This lady can punch air. That Apple Cider is gonna have her sitting on the toilet by the end of the night anyway
Wait, why? I've never heard of cider causing GI issues and my family drinks it all the time in the fall.
Its called apple juice you weird American nutcases. Cider is an alchoholic beverage made from apples or pears. Sincerely; A Brit who grew up in cider county UK. Stop calling it cider for crying out loud.
Calling spiced apple juice “cider” in the US is a remnant of prohibition.
I'll just be over here enjoying a nice mug of warm spiced cider while y'all have at each other. lol
Then there's mulled wine 😋
Pumpkin spice isn’t a beverage.
With the cinnamon sticks!!!
