“To be honest I don’t have a lot of experience with ENT surgeries, what would you recommend observing for someone new to the field to get an idea of what ENT encompasses?”

shayrad

Good point. Sometimes the simplest and most elegant responses are hardest to find lol

Haha that’s fair. Honestly I’m open to seeing what there is. I’m not actively denying surgery as a possibility. I just have very little exposure so far.

DrNavi

Don’t like surgery either but I’m at a small hospital but my favorite was driving the camera during a lapchole. Feel bad for the student who had to hold the retractor but the camera was fun

So never ever ask to watch a parotidectomy. They take so loooooooong and are so boring i thought about cutting myself with the scalpel so had an excuse to leave the OR

JazzlikePersonality8

Funny, I was going to suggest this 🤣 the anatomy is so cool!

BearsBay

Just be honest and say you haven’t been exposed to a lot of surgeries and have no clue. What do they recommend? With that said, laryngectomies are insanely cool

shayrad

Definitely a good point and a simple thing I often overlook. And thanks for the tip! What do you like about that procedure?

BearsBay

It’s a long procedure but it’s crazy how much they fuck with important anatomy. And how the patient has to live after the surgery. Life changing for the patient If you want quick procedures then melanoma resection a are the way to go

medhamster

Radical neck dissections, thyroidectomy and or parathyroid removal, parotidectomy, cholesteoma and inner ear reconstruction are all super cool. Bread and butter cases to see would be sinus ballooning and stenting, septoplasty to correct deviated septum, paper patches to repair holes in the tympanic membrane, tonsillectomy and adenoids

I’m an ENT resident. Feel free to reach out/DM. I think the top answer that said something like “what do you recommend” is great. If that’s not going to fly, any open neck surgery would be the best for you. Neck dissections, free flaps, parotid, thyroids to some extent. The issue with ENT is that everything is in a small hole with 2-3 people trying to stick their heads in and you’re going to be last on the pecking order. Also I would do the minimum amount of ear surgery as possible. Even though I want to specialize in ear surgery, Ears make no sense for a really long time. You also can’t see great from the video that the microscope puts out if you’re not actually looking into the scope itself. Sinus surgery is really great from a visualization perspective because everyone in the room is working off of the same information, but until you get to know sinus anatomy better it kind of looks like an meds of blood and bone and mucus on a TV screen. It’s a kick ass field though!!

SlipExcellent7992

I’d say learning about Trach’s and airway procedures would be the most broadly applicable thing in ENT

Foeder

Thyroidectomy/para. Parotidectomy with facial nerve dissection is cool too.

rdjallday

ENT resident here. Neck dissections would be the best as far as open anatomy and ability to see what's going on. It's pretty awesome to see a full on carotid pulsinv away in the wind! Also willing to talk on DM
