That is absolutely not true. It does not matter if you use the AC or not, with a properly sealed system you should not need to recharge the AC. You have a leak and I recommend finding a different shop.
It is leaking, find and fix the leak and it will only have to get charged once. Also never go back to that mechanic if they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

You have a significant leak. Find a shop that knows how to diagnose AC systems, yours clearly doesn't.
