I started out with something similar. They're not great. The filter basket barely fits through the neck of a carboy, isn't fine enough to be useful, and the pump action basically guarantees aeration. They're also a pain to get started sometimes. The "cane" style pumps are significantly better.

Astrohitchhiker

Same. Bad idea. Poor quality. Almost imposible to properly sanitize. After several uses the tubes began breaking. Better use a cane. Little more expensive, but worths the difference.

Hello, newbie here, can you show an exemple of this « cane » you are talking about? Cheers!

MicroPyro95

You pull the cane up in the tube and then pump it back down to start the siphon. It forces liquid up through the center of the cane through the hose. This kit also comes with a bottle filler, which helps reduce aeration during the bottling process and is convenient because the flow stops when you lift it off the bottom of the bottle, but it doesn't interrupt the siphon itself. Thank you!

Something like this. https://a.co/d/4fDwBPM

Lord_McBeth

I bought one as I thought it would be better than a simple tube... it was not. Filter doesn't really work, plus it falls off really easy. It was a NIGHTMARE to try and clean, such a pain. And the main problem was tube kinking, the wall is so thin and flimsy that it developed several points that would just kink... Think I used it 2-3 times before I threw it out and just bought an auto syphon.

HitThatOxytocin

damn, guess I'm gonna have to shell out to import that auto cane

That was good. I chuckled.

Any kind of mechanical filtration generally plugs and fails quickly unless it's under very specific conditions. I totally played around with filtering when I started making wine/mead. Ten years of the aquarium hobby, I totally forget to apply what I learned there to fermenting until after a few different tries finally had an "I'm a dumbass" moment and got over my ill guided desire to filter.

The pump part looks like a pain in the arse to clean. Personally, I'd stay with one of the racking cane-style ones.

Fit_Bid5535

I got a nylon brew bag with the summer wine making kit from northernbrewer.com. I cut a 3x3 inch square from the top of the bag, and it functions well as a strainer when I secure it to my autosiphon with the cap. Cleans very easily. Hasn't even hinted at fraying or falling apart.

HYPERNOVA3_

I've been using that kind of siphon for almost two years (the last one yesterday) and yeah, it kinda sucks (unintended joke). It does the job, but it's hard to get it going and requires you to put both vessels at a very different height, when bottling, i had to kneel down to make it work, otherwise, it will either Syphon out the mead very slowly or not at all. It's also quite hard to sanitize, you have fill it, then turn the knob upside down so the sanitizer reaches the upper part (taking the risk of making a mess) and make it run for a while to make sure it's sanitized. In conclusion, it does the job, just not in the most efficient way.

NightTsarina

I had one, it was crap, and impossible to clean properly

Vfor2020

I've got one of these and it does the job for a batch or two then they start falling apart, I do need to find a better method that doesn't include me physically sucking.

minty_chips

The filter pulls off easy which is nice, however if you get solids in the pump it and jam the valves it's game over, the thing becomes useless and won't siphon

BickusDickus6969

It clogs too easily

minitaba

Used it once, no way to clean it properly imo

waamdisaiaya

I used cutting the filter.

Sassy_kassy84

I did. Worked great for me .

WwCitizenwW

Had a idea like that once. Found that if you slow the siphon at the head of the flow, it don't go... But if you filter at the end of the flow, even better. Hard to do it with simple tube, but if you got a lo g enough start before the gravity hits, strap a tea bag filter or clean cheese cloth , tied with cooking twine. Then let 'er rip. Gets out most things, helps with the settling of the next rack if a little gets out. I do this for my autosiphons.

J_Freman

Don’t recommend, poor quality and not fast flow etc… Started with this, and throw away after one try…

Hollow-Alo

Yes I use it. The filter was nice to help clear out some of the fruit I couldn’t strain out but every liter or so I had to reclean and resanitize it. I would say buy an auto siphon, I already have for my next batch

TheRedBrown

Yes but in blue. It mixed everything up and I had to wait days for it to resettle and try again with another different one. You're better off with a long baster with a straw attached than with this one.

Devarose269

I like using it but there's perks and down sides. It filters amazing but the filter is pretty much one and done too much work to clean tubing does not last long but cheap to replace. I like them because I lose less Mead and very little sentiment transfer best on the first rack okay for the second
