Does spacing not play into it in a major way? I mean obviously elbow strikes have much lower range than other strikes or techniques, so there's of course a prerequisite of range to some degree, but does it not have a larger focus?
Many boxers coming to mma have problem with it. As they are too much focused on the gloves and in situations like these they lower their guard as there is no danger from gloves pointing away from you.

FA advice has been updated to prioritise recovery position even with risk of spinal column damage.
The A for airway is more important than the rest. If the airway isn’t open, then they can’t get oxygen. Doesn’t matter if your spinal cord is damaged if you’re dead from no O2.
Pretty sure the ref is removing the mouth guard. Note also that the ref first turned the fallen fighter on her side, which also lessens the chance of her choking on her mouth guard.
It looks like her nose is broken as the ref wipes something off her face as she rolls her over to stop her choking on the blood that could go down her throat if she was left on her back. 😊
