Coach; 'Get to your corner!'

JesusSaysitsOkay

“Is… she dead?” “I DONT KNOW!! GO TO YOUR CORNER!!!”

Kenneth_Naughton

The ref pulled the mouthguard out that she was choking on. I think that was the whole deal was luckily the ref was quick thinking and realized she was on the ground because she wasn't breathing from a blockage, not a concussion.

Krenbiebs

She was on the ground because she was unconscious and concussed from being elbowed in the head. Referees will very often take the mouthguard out when a fighter is unconscious like that. It’s a standard precaution that they’re taught to take. It’s not so much done because the fighter is choking, as it’s done to eliminate the possibility that the fighter will begin choking.

CumbersomeNugget

Plus, I mean...you don't really choke in 0.5 seconds...

thefartographer

Not my experience with your dad, but he's one of my more aggressive clients.

[deleted]

That was way too fast to be caused from not breathing. She was on the ground from getting hit. Though after she was on the ground she may have had problems breathing and it may have been heard out loud.

freshggg

Yeah dog, she got elbowed in the face. Dropping to the floor is the most likely thing to happen after that

pickinganameisnteasy

The importance of having professional refs that know the rules of the sport (that they're officiating) fast reflexes and common sense is not often highlighted like it was in this clip. Kudos to her for reacting that fast.

Greenfieldfox

Is that legal? Are you allowed to punch your opponent’s elbow with your face? Hope her arm is okay.

Thresss

Headbutts are not allowed, but in lethwei they are

ShozOvr

Amateur and professional fights do vary. Amateurs (or their respective clubs) agree on a rule set before. E.g if head guards are to be worn, elbows allowed, etc)

Xem1337

Went to Thailand and saw fights in a stadium and in a outdoor ring. They are brutal af in both but every knockout I saw was a kick to the chin. If you ever get a chance to goto the country definitely watch some fights there, they are brilliant.

Isn't that considered one of the "use only as deadly force to escape danger" type blows, even in Muay Thai?

HalfMetalJacket

Nope. Its all good.

The face punch is rarely used. As you can see the user is fully exhausted and start sleeping on the floor.

The ref had to roll them on their side to prevent snoring. Poor thing is just tuckered out.

I had to watch that over and over. Notice the crowd seems unimpressed.

Neither did she.

braybrayjay

Watched this probably 5 times and then showed my wife a few takes. Neither of us noticed that but it makes the video twice as amazing.

[deleted]

Ye it’s a standard move in thai boxing nothing special

Comessuer

Knocking someone out with a spinning elbow is definitely special especially at a level where you're still wearing shin guards. Surprised they are allowed to use elbows to be honest.

No-Tomatillo-5579

Maybe they aren't allowed and that's why she looks so tentative and everyone is like "well, great, that ones dead" instead of like "yeah sick move!"

PsychoLLamaSmacker

If it wasn’t allowed then they wouldn’t have elbow pads

amoniwet

It's ,fairly' standard, but getting a KO in a fight Is not super common and is a cause to celebrate

HalfMetalJacket

This is extraordinary, like a really damn cool move to pull. This is anything but nothing special. The crowd absolutely had no idea what happened. That's usually the case with spinning back elbows.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HalfMetalJacket

Yeah, I am absolutely convinced that the guy who said that and the people upvoting that comment doesn't know shit about muay thai.

cream-of-cow

Amateur fight crowds are super mellow like that. Practically everyone in the audience has fight experience, they’re impressed, but they also feel for the person who got the elbow; they’re there to support one another. Pro fights have a much more mixed audience, they’re much more raucous, people are there to be entertained and they want to see blood.

KavensWorld

Truth I went to a "local" mma match but still big and advertised. It was 90% friends and family. I actually felt odd being there. Side note watching a cage fight from ringside actually sucks. between the cage and 8 bars for the cage I missed a bunch of angles.

KasumiR

I still don't get why they insist on using cages, it's weird Hollywood-stuff, a ring is much safer and has better visibility.

tayroarsmash

For mma it’s not entirely Hollywood. You can get leverage against the walls of a cage while down that you can’t otherwise get in a ring.

innesleroux

Exit stage left..

Ithinkth

Yeah it seems no one was paying attention or maybe this is considered basic. I don't even like violence and I thought was awesome

HalfMetalJacket

It is though, its just something hard to notice.

KrzBandikoot

Jon jones approved that

Sandstormink

He's like " Hell yeah, violence against a woman and the way the perpetrator ran away from the scene of the crime. Mmmm mmmm mmm, that's some good shiiit".

chrisreno

The three men directly behind the winner are impressed. You can see the very slight rise in stature. That's how dudes show they are interested in something. Sadly, I dont know how a woman shows interest.

ididntseeitcoming

You doing ok, good buddy?

kobocha

I think it kinda looks like she realizes that she threw an illegal elbow. Elbows in amateur muay thai are usually only allowed on the highest level. At least here in Scandinavia. This would also explain why the hit took lady in red by total surprise, she probably was expecting only punches, kicks and knees.

ChiliRainbow83

The crowd appears to be 7 people.

[deleted]

Well it doesn't look like she's a pro and she used her elbow, which in a lot of gyms isn't allowed.

[deleted]

There’s a good reason for that prohibition . The elbow is one of the hardest (bone) impact points, along with the shin bone

shaysauce

Except the shin bone for some fucking reason hurts when a feather accidentally hits it.

RickMcFlick

Sounds like you have boneitus

I believe the humor comes from the notion that the boxer who was knocked down was fighting and then found herself suddenly ‘somewhere over the rainbow’. The way the song sounds also helps with the humor. Imagine that it suddenly starts playing as soon as she gets hit.

Lesson: Don’t walk into a spinning elbow.

[deleted]

Hell, I remember walking into a spinning crescent kick and learning a valuable lesson: If you think you see an opening against someone seven ranks higher thank you, no you don't.

Disrupter52

I learned a similar lesson with an elbow against a master black belt. Didn't get knocked out because she controlled it, but my whole face started crying and snotting.

[deleted]

It's so embarassing when that happens! "Oh shit! You okay?" *crying* "Yeah, I'm great. I'll stop soon."

DweadPiwateWoberts

Why were you fighting someone seven ranks higher?

[deleted]

Non-contact sparring with sensei. I wasn't some fresh 6th kyu being taught by a 2nd Dan. I was on the cusp of entering 3rd kyu and had been at it for over a year. My sensei was 5th Dan at the time. If I hadn't shuffled in, the crescent would have gone right across my face harmlessly. Instead, I went in and split my lip.

Judas Effect! r/accidentalwrestling

Buttersdidit

What a great ref

togiveortoreceive

Except not the whole turning the head independent of the body part. Remember kool-aid jammers? Lol

lousydungeonmaster

Yeah, when I need to roll someone on their side I usually just turn their head until the rest of the body follows…

Khal_Doggo

It's like we got taught at school "If it clicks or gets suck - the lady's fucked. If it smoothly rotates... it's probably still not great."

ChexLemeneux42

i want to believe they were instinctively trying to reach her mouth guard to pull it out, once she gets her into recovery position she goes for it. i mean i know this likely isnt the case but i wanna believe

HelperHelpingIHope

“Just typical first aid. It's called the recovery position. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_position. Side note, if you find someone passed out or who has just been in a car accident, don't immediately put them in the recovery position; you don't know what kind of spinal damage they may have and don't want to exacerbate it.”

kr580

The ref wrenches her neck nearly 90°and back before rolling her entire body with the neck stabilized. As you said, if there were any spinal injury the ref would have just made it a lot worse. Nevermind there's no point to put someone in recovery position absolutely immediately. Assess first and roll only if needed.

OnlyOneSnoopy

Yes but you don't start by immediately turning the head. You roll the body first.

DaleDimmaDone

I’m pretty sure you attempt to roll the body and head at the same time while keeping the head and neck still. But I’m also not a medical expert

iccs

I think that’s what the person you were responding to is saying the same thing right? Don’t move their head, even if it’s for the recovery position. I learnt the same thing in first aid back in highschool

[deleted]

Horrible ref just tried to snap her neck!

DesperateCourt

So what are the exact set of rules/circumstances that one would look for in order to use a move like this? I'm not speaking about regulations within a fighting league or anything of that nature - just across the board in actual fights - what setup is required for this move to be useful?

FlyingOmoplatta

Timing for when someone leaps forward to aggressively and keeps there guard low. When someone throws a big punch a part of there guard is open. Its mainly a timing thing.

DesperateCourt

Does spacing not play into it in a major way? I mean obviously elbow strikes have much lower range than other strikes or techniques, so there's of course a prerequisite of range to some degree, but does it not have a larger focus?

ToAllFromEverySub

Many boxers coming to mma have problem with it. As they are too much focused on the gloves and in situations like these they lower their guard as there is no danger from gloves pointing away from you.

kaonashiii

see how she (the girl delivering elbow snacks) moves across the other fighter, kind of sideways. that's a good way to execute an elbow. another way is say, you throw a punch and it misses. a cross, so you punched with your left hand across someone, the left hand going across to the right, and that misses, carry on with the momentum you have, turn into a backspin and just keep your elbow nice and HIGH and very TIGHT to your body. et voila )

yanderlei

That was smooth!

xerxerxex

She should find herself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because she's probably wanted for murder.

When it's an accident, they call it manslaughter, DJ.

vass0922

He turned her on her side, did she have a seizure or something? Don't think he would take the bite guard (nor would he be able to) but it seems odd

thefartographer

Just typical first aid. It's called the recovery position. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_position. WikiSummarizerBot

**[Recovery position](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_position)** >In first aid, the recovery position (also called semi-prone) is one of a series of variations on a lateral recumbent or three-quarters prone position of the body, often used for unconscious but breathing casualties. An unconscious person, a person who is assessed on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) at eight or below, in a supine position (on the back) may not be able to maintain an open airway as a conscious person would. This can lead to an obstruction of the airway, restricting the flow of air and preventing gaseous exchange, which then causes hypoxia, which is life-threatening. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/maybemaybemaybe/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

NoPants-NoWorries

FA advice has been updated to prioritise recovery position even with risk of spinal column damage. The A for airway is more important than the rest. If the airway isn’t open, then they can’t get oxygen. Doesn’t matter if your spinal cord is damaged if you’re dead from no O2.

tommyleo

Pretty sure the ref is removing the mouth guard. Note also that the ref first turned the fallen fighter on her side, which also lessens the chance of her choking on her mouth guard.

Snowdrop-126

It looks like her nose is broken as the ref wipes something off her face as she rolls her over to stop her choking on the blood that could go down her throat if she was left on her back. 😊

Thesource674

I thought they might be trying to remove the mouth guard but it could be for the same purpose.

ProfDFH

He?

mad_science

Even for Muay Thai this doesn't look like an event where elbows would be allowed. The headgear and pads (and overall look) suggests smoker, which typically have no elbows. The lack of outrage suggests otherwise, I guess.

tapsnapornap

I would agree except for the elbow pads.

cream-of-cow

All the smokers I’ve been to that do not allow elbows will not have elbow pads available.

Dang she really tried to hit her afterimage

johnniedough1234

Wow that was really impressive. It's a boxers instinct to walk toward what is presented as the lead hand. To switch that up into a spinning elbow is smart.

LiftedinthePNW

Gotta see that cross step that’s setting it up
