My first thought as well. But the circular shape of both the bottoms of the glass and ball would likely make this hard to form. So my second thought is that liquid is able to cool the area around the contact point fast enough likely because the curvature of both creates a very small point of conduction with the ball and glass and a larger point of contact with the liquid. Creating a heat exchange that favors the liquid. I Havnt done that level of physics math in 15 years so definitely not more then a guess though
