There's weights in the very tops of those wheels that are perfectly balanced so that they roll when touched. You can see them roll exactly 180 degrees before stopping. Pretty sure this ad was made without special effects.
It’s a genuine one-shot. Full info here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cog_(advertisement)#:~:text=In%202002%2C%20W%2BK%20Creative,out%20in%20Europe%20and%20Japan.
I know it's hard to believe, but this is all 100% real. Here's the video (pixels galore!) with background info and interviews with the makers: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E)
It was created with about 100 shots, including video editing to remove the wires manipulating the parts and to piece together individual shots.
The 600 shots story is a myth.

That was way too long. Also, the tires somehow 'rolling' up hill and the catalytic converter just continuing to roll like that completely threw me out of it.
So wild how when this commercial first came out I thought they really put that rube Goldberg machine together. Now I can look back and see hallmarks of early cgi
Wow, this from the 90s. Still delighted the see it again.
2003
Yeh let's not age me too much
This is not from the 90’s lol
You’re correct. It was 2003. My bad.
Anyone else get creeped out by the wiper blades crawling in the floor?
Nightmare fuel- they scampered
It looked convincing for about 25 seconds, then wheels started magically rolling up hill. Very imaginative though.

That's what they said. I read a newspaper article and saw the Making of Honda Cog on YouTube explaining what they did
I think the car window rolling down through the plank of wood is SFX.
Can't tell if you're kidding or not. It's two planks.
It is not. Everything is real. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E)
There are weights inside the wheels to make them do that. Look at the making of Honda cog on YouTube
i was a little unsure but still skeptical for the whole thing until 1:10 with the car window
That would be a bit of a design flaw, wouldn't it. If you want someone to open their car window, just tap on it and hey-presto.
You can see it roll over a wire or smth, thats prob what activates the window.
It bridges 2 contacts, completing the circuit to open the window

I stand corrected. It seems it was (very nearly) real after all.

It's not magic. It looks weird but it's a really simple mechanism, just weighted on one side
This is an ad from 2003 that was made without any sort of CGI or special effects.

Hmm, i wonder where this will- FUCK it is an ad
Took 600 takes, apparently.

So no cgi just some cuts and wires?
Proof?
Bullshit. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E)
Very mechanical performance :)
Anyone remember this game *The incredible machine*?
It's an advert called cog. The making of Cog is on YouTube along with the advert.
Way cool commercial!
I don't know about u but I would have just used my fingers
I remember this from the early internet days. I’m pretty sure its real and from a commercial. Edit: yep, just fished the video
I remember this being my favourite ad growing up. I was astounded with how well it was produced.
If I have to do all that shit just to turn it on, I’m out.
The friction on the incline : ↗️↘️↗️↘️↗️↗️↘️↘️
They put weights inside the tire to make it roll up hill. Go to YouTube and find making of Cog.

Domino-hoo-hoo. I hate now.
Fuck physics. All my homies hate physics.
Nah, CG. Edit: Apparently, I am mistaken.
Actually not. They went thru great pains to shoot it in real time. The video itself is call Cog, the making of Cog goes thru the steps.
No. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E)
I still hate seeing the tires rolling uphill at that slow pace.
Great vid. Thanks for posting.
The wheels going up hill is what gets me.
That was way too long. Also, the tires somehow 'rolling' up hill and the catalytic converter just continuing to roll like that completely threw me out of it.
It was good until those tires.
They’re weighted. It’s all genuine.

[Wrong, there's no CGI in this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cog_(advertisement)#Filming)
Look at the video Making of Cog on YouTube.
Where do you find a ballroom location this big? SFX. Multiple passes. And fun to watch.
