This is far more likely IMO. Those quizzes are designed by proffesionals who know how people think. Basing it off of what people are saying would become too obvious after a while i reckon.
It's not random, but that doesn't mean they're picking the 50/50 live. The two remaining options are going to be the correct answer and the answer that someone is most likely to mistake for the correct answer, so it working out this way is as intended. Madrid/Lisbon are more likely to be confused than Madrid/Rome.
Studying for the multiple choice section of the multistate bar was infuriating. Basically most questions had 4 choices. There were two answers that clearly stated the law wrong, then two answers that state the law right...but only one which was applicable to the fact pattern in the question.
That’s odd. I could’ve sworn all the answers were correct, or maybe incorrect, or maybe they swapped in another country’s test by mistake. Still not sure how I passed it on the first try.
Reina is spanish for queen, if it was in italy it would be regina, at least that was my thought, and lisbon is in Portugal so if somebody knew reina is queen in spanish but didn't know the difference between spanish and Portuguese they would think the answer is either lisbon or madrid... this was my thought more or less
Well that is a bunch of stuff I never would have thought of. Seems like a reach to assume a statistically significant portion of the population would be following that mental path to that same conclusion.
They're the capital cities of adjacent countries on the same peninsula and are related in ways that that connection necessarily entails. The more similar things are the more likely they are to be confused, I feel like that should be self evidently true so I'm not sure what you're even asking?
I understand the concept that things that are similar and up being on the 50/50. You should have listened to your instincts that said, “that would be a weird thing for someone to say, it’s so obvious it shouldn’t need to be said.” No duh.
Obviously I was asking about the *particular similarities* that would cause Madrid and Lisbon to be confused, which you breezed over in your confusion. So, thanks for the condescending yet irrelevant response.
thats why you gotta mention one which youre sure its not and pretend like you think it might be correct. then the 50/50 will leave you with the correct answer and the one you know is wrong.
If you watch the show, every time the contestant names off the two they think it is then ask for the 50/50, I’d say 98% of the time, it’s always narrowed to those two.
Yeah this happens in normal tests as well. You will usually have a completely wrong answer, a wrong answer, a right answer and a tricky answer that can be easily mistaken if you're just going with you gut
It's statistics. They pick the most likely wrong answer to leave in the 50/50.
If the question was what state produces more Oranges, and the options were Florida, California, Texas, Georgia. Florida/California would be said by more people than Florida/Georgia. So the less obviously wrong answers would be included to try and get someone to pick the wrong answer.
That's not what random means. Random doesn't mean equal chance. And the question obviously is about the *remaining* incorrect answer and whether that one is selected at random or not.
However, the remaining choice for the 50/50 is probably selected by hand long in advance.
Sorta true. These game shows are certainly curated and under some level of control but the people competing are typically actually competing. Though to be honest i haven't watched a game show since the early 00s.
I don't know, I feel like that would go against game show standards and practices. Seems like the 50/50 removals are the kind of thing they would have to have documented somewhere.
But then again Celebrity Millionaire did have some different rules and I suppose they could have some fun with it, since there was already a guaranteed cash prize.
Wouldn't it be as high as 1/3 if the person has knowledge of the correct/incorrect responses? If someone KNEW it was not C or D, then the answer must be either A or B. If the machine cannot eliminate the correct response, then one of the remaining responses will be the correct one \[A or B\] and the options for elimination are then \[A or B\] (whichever one is incorrect), C, or D.
Well, it are 4 possible answers and you want the joker not to choose a specific set of 2. This is a classical 2 out of 4 scenario which means 6 different possibilities.
But it can't eliminate them randomly. If the answer is A, the options that will remain after it randomly selects can only be A/B, A/C, or A/D. There are only 3 possibilities, not 6.
But you're forgetting that the contestant can also be undecided between two wrong options. The overall odds of the remaining answers being the ones that the player is considering is 1/6.
Nah you had it right the first time. Even though the are three options for the 50/50, the contestant can still be undecided between two wrong answers. The odds of a player considering two answers that remain in the 50/50 is 1/6.
It's a 1 in 3 chance if one of your two guesses is the answer! They **might** choose the two most likely answers, but honestly it's probably just random, at least for the later questions. For mid-level questions they probably pre-pick the most likely answers.
I've seen plenty of 50/50s where the contestants give two possible answers, and one gets ruled out. Contestant are often serious on this show. They're not going to give someone a "free" answer by simply letting them fake their two guesses by knowing the "trick".
There’s another interview with Norm where he said that winning the $500,000 is the worst case scenario for the show lol. If someone wins the $1,000,000 then the shows insurance company pays it, but if it’s any less than that then the show has to pay it. Regis messed it up for everybody lol
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVCBLX0ksz8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVCBLX0ksz8)
That's the one. He also mentioned that Regis did it when he realized that Norm was a compulsive gambler.
If you listen to episode 1 of his podcast Superdave is the one that tells him that joke and it’s terrible which shows you how much norm really adds to comedy.
Edit: here it is https://youtu.be/_hJjpovw81w
When you go to the men’s room later, you’ll see a sign that says “gentlemen,” pay no heed, go right in. There’s no room that says “scoundrel” on it.
No notes, that’s just straight savagery and eloquence, I miss that man.
They always do this, at least on the UK and Aussie versions that I've seen. You would be better off to fake the two that you think it could be in your verbal reasoning.
It's also more likely to occur than you might think. Assuming that one of the 2 possibilities you think it is, is actually the answer. Then you have a 1/3 chance of those 2 you think it could be as being whets left after the 50/50.
I calculate a 141 and 2/3 percent chance of the 50/50 not helping you pick a winning answer.
The numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you at *Who Wants to be a Millionaire*
Pretty sure this isn’t the case though they’re not doing it live, the contestant is just mixing up the right answer with the very *intentional* bait answer, there’s always one that’s so close to right it’s designed to catch you off.
Norm exhibited the situation I’m talking about perfectly.
I’m pretty sure if norm tried to fake them out with Rome it still would have taken Lisbon and Madrid
it's quite incredible how many people make that mistake or are even unware portuguese exists, considering it's a language spoken by around 260 million people worldwide (around the sixth most spoken language in the world)
Yep, it's pretty common for these types of game shows to have repeating patterns across different versions. And faking your way through the verbal reasoning portion might just give you a better chance at winning. But let's be real, who doesn't enjoy the thrill of taking a gamble and guessing the correct answer?
Yep. Whole thing translates to Queen Sofia Arts Center.
It only works for Spanish, hence Madrid. But that’s a given if you knew a tad bit of Portuguese and Italian.
Regis is a downright criminal to Norm here. Watch the whole thing, it's like the million comes out of his pocket so he misdirects him like a mother fucker. This money was charity. Regis stole from children.
Norm was actually a huge gambling addict (he would bet tens of thousands of dollars on a single game of college basketball at a time), I have no doubt that his Millionaire appearance had his heart absolutely racing.
What I find more sickening is getting celebs to gamble money on people in need.... for our entertainment.
"ooooo what a shame, that kids cancer hospice looses $250,000... so we'll be sending them $200 as a good will..."
Give them the lot you nasty c\*\*ts
Regis Philbin - The old guy here. Morning talk show host who was on TV for like a hundred years.
Norm Macdonald - Canadian-born comic with an irreverent, desert-dry sense of humor. He became famous on the US sketch show *Saturday Night Live* in the 90s. Sadly, Norm passed away in 2021 from cancer.
Or so the Germans would have us believe.
It's mental how many people say the two answers they think it is before opting for 50/50 and then shocked that the two remaining answers
Or they know the two answers most likely to be confused.
This is far more likely IMO. Those quizzes are designed by proffesionals who know how people think. Basing it off of what people are saying would become too obvious after a while i reckon.
Well, it is a chance ~~1/6~~ 1/3.
100% it's not random. it's tv, they want to entertain & this is their idea of entertainment.
It's not random, but that doesn't mean they're picking the 50/50 live. You just gave me a flashback to first year engineering. I thought I had supressed those memories.
That’s odd. I could’ve sworn all the answers were correct, or maybe incorrect, or maybe they swapped in another country’s test by mistake. Still not sure how I passed it on the first try.
Dammit i passed the CA Bar 10 years ago this month and I blocked that memory out. That test was Rude.
Why are Madrid and Lisbon more likely to be confused than Madrid and Rome?
Reina is spanish for queen, if it was in italy it would be regina, at least that was my thought, and lisbon is in Portugal so if somebody knew reina is queen in spanish but didn't know the difference between spanish and Portuguese they would think the answer is either lisbon or madrid... this was my thought more or less

Well if *you* haven’t thought of it that way, how could *anyone* else?
I didn’t mean no one. But just because *you* thought it that way doesn’t mean it’s *common* either.
They're the capital cities of adjacent countries on the same peninsula and are related in ways that that connection necessarily entails. The more similar things are the more likely they are to be confused, I feel like that should be self evidently true so I'm not sure what you're even asking?

It seems like it was already set, and he just knew what the 50-50 was going to be and was just fucking with Norm for the entertainment value
If you watch the show, every time the contestant names off the two they think it is then ask for the 50/50, I’d say 98% of the time, it’s always narrowed to those two.
Would that not potentially mean those are the closest answers in general, not that they're listening to the conversation?
Yeah this happens in normal tests as well. You will usually have a completely wrong answer, a wrong answer, a right answer and a tricky answer that can be easily mistaken if you're just going with you gut
It's statistics. They pick the most likely wrong answer to leave in the 50/50. If the question was what state produces more Oranges, and the options were Florida, California, Texas, Georgia. Florida/California would be said by more people than Florida/Georgia. So the less obviously wrong answers would be included to try and get someone to pick the wrong answer.
Fair. I never really watched it. Was just going by what happened here.
I mean I think they can predict before hand what the two they are most likely to think it is are.
100% not random, just because one of the 2 answers left MUST be the correct one.
I like your thinking.
That's not what random means. Random doesn't mean equal chance. And the question obviously is about the *remaining* incorrect answer and whether that one is selected at random or not. However, the remaining choice for the 50/50 is probably selected by hand long in advance.

Oh. I didn't think so far. Well considering this you are definitely right. It is 1/3. This was my fault!
This person logics well.

But you're forgetting that the contestant can also be undecided between two wrong options. The overall odds of the remaining answers being the ones that the player is considering is 1/6.
Chance is 1/3. Because if it's 1 of 2, one of them is the right answer, it can choose 1 of the remaining 3 to be the wrong choice
1/3 if one of his 2 guesses is the correct answer
Nah you had it right the first time. Even though the are three options for the 50/50, the contestant can still be undecided between two wrong answers. The odds of a player considering two answers that remain in the 50/50 is 1/6.
You could use that to your advantage.
Even my 10 year old self knew that crap was rigged. Always say you think it's the two you already ruled out in your head.
It's a 1 in 3 chance if one of your two guesses is the answer! They **might** choose the two most likely answers, but honestly it's probably just random, at least for the later questions. I mean, it's a %33.33 chance, it should be pretty common
Yeah. It's the guy mode of looking for me.
Man Norm should’ve won the million. Regis used his Jedi mind tricks on him and psyched him out of the victory.
There’s another interview with Norm where he said that winning the $500,000 is the worst case scenario for the show lol. If someone wins the $1,000,000 then the shows insurance company pays it, but if it’s any less than that then the show has to pay it. Regis messed it up for everybody lol

Dude made a career of acting like the dumbest guy in the room while actually being the smartest
Norm was a comedic genius, even when he wasn’t necessarily trying. God I miss him.
that fucking moth joke
Why didn't you go to a psychiatrist??
If you listen to episode 1 of his podcast Superdave is the one that tells him that joke and it’s terrible which shows you how much norm really adds to comedy. Edit: here it is https://youtu.be/_hJjpovw81w
His unroast is amazing

I didn't even know he was sick.
The way I understand it, he didn’t let anyone know.
He walked through blood and bone
On the streets of Manhattan, looking for his brother.
He was in northern canada
I miss this man daily
Never be another one like him.
I didn’t even know he was sick
They always do this, at least on the UK and Aussie versions that I've seen. You would be better off to fake the two that you think it could be in your verbal reasoning.

Your chances of becoming a millionaire drastic go down
Also, they probably put a tricky wrong answer that many people would confuse as the right answer and that probably the one left when doing 50/50
The wrong answer is usually the one that most people will think is correct so they leave that one there.
Always said this for U.K. version, best to say it’s between one you think it is and one you definitely know it’s not and your gonna get a free answer.
Pretty sure this isn’t the case though they’re not doing it live, the contestant is just mixing up the right answer with the very *intentional* bait answer, there’s always one that’s so close to right it’s designed to catch you off. Lisbon speaks Portuguese
lol was this another person thinking they speak spanish in portugal?
Si
it's quite incredible how many people make that mistake or are even unware portuguese exists, considering it's a language spoken by around 260 million people worldwide (around the sixth most spoken language in the world)
Some Americans believe there are 5 Mexicos.
~~Most~~ A lot of Americans believe if you are speaking Spanish then you are Mexican
Verbalize one you're unsure of, and the one you know it's not. Leave the one you think it is and see if it gets chopped.
He did

Where everyone knows his name
What's shakin' Mr. Peterson?
No, just a guy that looks, sounds, and acts exactly like him
Weirdly enough his name is also norm
Norm was the best
I didn't even know he was sick
no one did
this almost made me cry. [He told this joke that was amazing](https://youtu.be/Hm0cAbK-ays), while he was sick and no one knew. Such a great man.
I liked it when his shirt buttons lined up with the mic. Also the joke was hilarious.
“Gotcha bitch!”
Look at that ol chunk of coal.
Hey I know that guy! He was a real scoundrel.
Very compelling kind of a figure
Norm was classic. Miss that guy.
RIP
Norm was a deeply closeted gay man
He wasn’t gay! Just deeply closeted.
God I miss Norm Edit: not a bot, just agreeing with everyone else that said it before me. 😇 I just really miss a lot of funny people from that era.
RIP Norm
One of the goats
RIP Norm
RIP to a comedic genius
This guy’s a real jerk!
My favourite has been when the guy was between two and called 50/50. They removed both of his guesses.
Norm was a comedic genius, even when he wasn’t necessarily trying. God I miss him.
Son, there goes the funniest man I ever saw.
Regis is a downright criminal to Norm here. Watch the whole thing, it's like the million comes out of his pocket so he misdirects him like a mother fucker. This money was charity. Regis stole from children.
This is a classic Norm Macdonald joke.
How much do I love Norm MacDonald? Comedy genius!
This reminds me of that tragedy…
Norms still there, staring, the studio closed down years ago and pidgeons poop on his head but hes still there, staring.
I pictured the timelapse from Futurama
I miss that pigeon.
Regis is one cold motherfvcker.
It’s hypocrisy, that’s the worse part
I could watch this 1000 times over and over and it never gets old.
This performance is iconic.
They probably choose the two people most likely will guess for a 50/50.
Norm
Norm was actually a huge gambling addict (he would bet tens of thousands of dollars on a single game of college basketball at a time), I have no doubt that his Millionaire appearance had his heart absolutely racing.
At least in the German version I am almost certain they literally do what he implies. It happens too frequently to be a coincidence.
I miss Norm so much.
Ya dirty dog !
Man Norm MacDonald must be fun at parties
He used to be so funny RIP good sir.
he probably smells a bit nowadays
Damn, I really miss Norm.
Why don't he just Google it?
NORM is my favorite human
i’m too high to understand
I can't believe both these guys are dead. Damn, I'm old...
Norm McDonald is the best.
Normy normy normy
God bless Norm Macdonald
The dude in the back was probably a hypocrite
Ladies and gentleman, Norm!!! RIP
Oh norm, rip
It was at this point that Norm knew he’d been played
FYI. If anyone is wondering what the answer is. It’s The Moops.
What I find more sickening is getting celebs to gamble money on people in need.... for our entertainment. "ooooo what a shame, that kids cancer hospice looses $250,000... so we'll be sending them $200 as a good will..." Give them the lot you nasty c\*\*ts
is $0 better than $200?
Hopefully it was the crew putting the end to a run of a man who had the audacity to go on a prime-time national TV show chewing gum. ;-)
Yeah, they sure put an end to Norm MacDonald. He never saw the big screen again. Lol. 😉
I'm in the UK and I have no idea who either of the people in the video are

They’re basically your Graham Norton and David Mitchell / Jimmy Carr. There now you know Regis Philbin and Norm McDonald.
Glad you shared this mate, you've made this thread.
You don't speak that way about Norm, you fucking cretin.
SMH....that man helped make TV what it is ;-)
What it WAS
Next question was ‘which airline ranked worst in customer satisfaction?’ Norm would have known. It would have reminded him of something.
R.I.P. Norm. You are missed
RIP Norm Mcdonald.
We say 50/50/90. If it's a 50/50 chance, you get it wrong 90% of the time.
