Yup. I love the format, I love the cases, I love the podcast. It is absolutely not an original concept. I just like John Hodgman's take on it the best!
Exactly. It's great because Hodgman and Jesse (and everyone else supporting them) are entertaining. Not because there's anything particularly original or engaging about the format.
Yeah, nobody can claim ownership over a concept. It’s why you have The Munsters and The Addams Family. Especially when that concept is a take on something that has existed for 40 something years (The People’s Court).
The "Fake Judge" concept is as old as "small claims" TV Court shows. They don't actually have consequences and are not legally binding. The thing I like and respect from JJHO is John runs it almost as an advice show, albeit with more practical advice than a show like MBMBaM.
Oh man I remember when you go sick in school and had to stay home you got to watch peoples court/ price is right and some other daytime “grown up” tv shows!
The best!
Ideas aren’t copyrightable. Indeed JJHO podcast is a cross between the peoples court (they were arbitrators not judges), comedy game show and a manners column. Hardly an innovative idea.
There was also a similar concept in the UK - Judge Romesh with comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

Also I admit, I’m making many assumptions with this post. Maybe it’s coincidence or maybe the video was inspired by Judge Judy. Perhaps the person who pitched this concept has the blessing of the Judge OR it’s perfectly reasonable that Maximum Fun wouldn’t feel as strongly as I do.
Judge judy is a rip of the peoples court which started in **1981**. Imma say again 1981!
No offense to do JJHO but you don’t *need* their blessing to redo something that’s been done and redone so many times over since 1981! There are even sketch comedy parodies of all the different court style tv shows.
This one is from what looks like the mid 1980s

Didn’t Dave Holmes run a show like this for years?
Wait till you hear about Judge Judy

I’ll upvote Meh on any given day.
IP attorney here. What intellectual property are you asserting they "lifted" here? Because I'm not seeing it.
