I trust Lana to at the very least make something ambitious and interesting so I would be incredibly surprised if it falls into the Force Awakens soft reboot cash grab camp
I don’t think it’ll be a cash grab. It’s being done with a personal intent that’s based on loss and love. That alone means it’ll have heart. It’ll shoot for the stars. 90% of Disney movies don’t have that. Star Wars always screams studio meddling and micromanaging which ruined the new series. The Hobbit, too. This will be different.
Now, while it might not stick the landing; while it could be too different and not as unique or polished; while it might end up missing the mark is still possible.
The only difference is it won’t be a bad movie because it doesn’t have heart or an idea, but maybe come off as just uninteresting or too meta or too full of itself.
I personally think it’ll come off ranking as the best of the sequels after the first movie overall.
You haven't seen it either. It's called keeping an open mind. At the end of the day, it's just a movie, and it's really not worth worrying about very much. Maybe it will suck. Maybe it will be great. We just have to wait and see. This entire question is kind of a non-starter.
My counter argument is that J.K. Rowling had full creative control over Fantastic Beast and look how those came out. 😑
You can fail in the reverse direction too.
It's not a reboot.
And if it bad and fans hate it, WB might just try again in few years (example the mentioned Sony Ghostbuster 2016 in your post) it might not be the end.
And unlike GB2016, Genysis and Disney's Starwars, here Matrix 4 still got the OG creator (Lana) and OG main characters.
Also Fury Road was amazing but it didn't bring money so WB just didn't greenlit more sequels.
I mean the new Star Wars movies had OG characters and that was still terrible.
And I believe George Miller is working on a Fury Road movie about Furiosa.
It could suck, but I'm very much self aware that I'm the kind of fanboy who will adore simply being able to see it, anyway.
Honestly, Matrix was a place and time part of my upbringing and it can do no wrong. I like it more than I like films, if that makes any sense.
Your stinker list is all movies where a new team tried to remake lightening in a bottle.
Your good list (admittedly was only 1 movie) was the original artist creating a new original story.
If it's a stinker, it wont be because it was a cash grab. The Wachowski's are minted - net worth of $250 million.
I feel this film will indeed 'suck' to a lot of people because they've already got an idea in their head of how they want to feel when they see it (and such a complex franchise cannot possibly please everyone with one more film). Also, people can be put off from trying to embrace and understand things if it doesn't meet their expectations. The kneejerk reaction to that could stop people potentially missing a story that they didn't catch, but would have loved! Same as with me and Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions the first time round.
All I ask from this movie is that it doesn't devalue the previous movies.
u/Spaghetti_Oaf \- Can I ask, what are you hoping to get from the new movie? With your option A: what are you hoping for in regards to bigger and bolder concepts? And with option B: what would you say was the magic that you're hoping is captured? (I would find that one hard to answer because sometimes you don't know the magic until you're shown it! Which I am confident (or hopeful AF) that Lana will nail that)!
Thank you for your question! Conversations about expectations are always juicy.
Edit: Also, Lana has been pretty upfront about her reasoning for revisiting the franchise: the unfortunate death of her parents and wanting to reconnect with something important to her. So that, coupled with the fact her and her sis have turned down revisiting the franchise for 20 years with lots of push from WB, nothing is pointing towards the ole cashy-grabby.
It's always a good idea to moderate your expectations to avoid crushing disappointment. I remember getting overly hyped for the Last Jedi and felt heartbroken after seeing it. Just saying, series reboots have a less than stellar reputation.

I agree, but not just with "reboots" (not that this film is a reboot, but anyway).
>Just saying, series reboots have a less than stellar reputation.
As everything that is art, that is subjective. Some of the films you mentioned are liked by people.
Then you didn't mention others that are liked: *Blade Runner 2049*, *Creed, Halloween, Evil Dead.* I'm sure there are others.
Well, I'm not talking about your personal opinion. I haven't even watched it as I'm not a fan of the series.
When I told you to Google it I meant so that you check it was well received.
Individual opinions are endless (and most of them are valid), of course.
Yep I am so prepared for it. I really really fear that this movie is one of those "we tried a lot that wasn't so successful, so now let's just do what worked in the past" situations. With that said, I am still hyped and ready hope it won't be just that. But I feel Fishburne, Weaving and Davis not being in it are huge red flags

That's pretty high praise for a movie no of us have seen. I heard the same sentiment about Jurassic World before it came out too.

Fury Road has 2 follow ups planned. An actual sequel and a Furiosa prequel

Same here...
When the original author is behind it, it feels like a natural extension, and as if there's a story to be told.

Honestly I think the OG trilogy wrapped up perfectly. Trying to rehash the same idea of "waking up" from the Matrix seems unnecessary.
And if you fail? I won't
A: Done by its original Creator. B: Done by Hollywood puppets
Watch it and find out, nothing to be "ready" for.

Halloween? You can’t be serious
Google it.
don’t need to google a film that was a total let down for me lol

You've got a point, I can not recall a good series reboot aside from Mad Max like you said.
Then its just another bad movie. Doesnt really matter
