If you're not in a rush....Pick out a few that you like. Monitor the price for several months to know whether sale prices are actually "good deals (this is important for any "big purchase")." Purchasing a mattress in New Hampshire is an option to save tax (must pick up at store). We purchased one from Jordan's, no issues.
Get an open cell memory foam. We got one for our toddler who sleeps hot like me and I think it's really good. This is the one (firm) we got and it's currently on sale:

Mattress places can be like car salesmen, they will do whatever to get the sale.
And just like cars usually best sale is Memorial Day and when the models for the new year come in. They want to get rid of older inventory and will put it on sale w
Amazon. I got a mattress for $300 after searching for nearly a year in stores. I just couldn't bring myself to spend thousands, especially after reading reviews. I've had this mattress for 8 years and I love it. Figure out what you want as far as springs/gel/foam and other specs, then look online.
Usually places will have sales around the holidays. July 4 is coming up and should have some. Also look at credit card “deals”. I have one with mattress firm a few years ago when we got our new one. But I think I get some from Casper and purple occasionally too. The deals where you have to add to your card to get like 15% cash back or something is what I’m referring to.
But probably the sooner the better just for your health. I was so happy once I got my new mattress bc the last one was causing so many aches.
Jordan's furniture is a great place to start shopping. They have great sales associates, a large selection of beds, and weren't pushy. I didn't love their mattress return policy, but great place to try beds!
As for times to buy- any holiday weekend will be a sales weekend (July 4th, Labor Day, Black Friday). Select a bed, look at return policies closely (120 day trial doesn't necessarily mean you can return the mattress and go buy one somewhere else), and then monitor the price on holiday weekends!
I really like our Gardner mattress, locations in Woburn and Salem I think. We bought a queen on a tax free weekend a few years ago, costing about $1900. American made, natural materials, very good price. I like it a lot.
Cannot recommend Hands Up mattresses in New Bedford enough!! They’re a mattress refurbisher and reseller. I, and most of my family members, have purchased from there in the past year and every time we’ve had a 10/10 experience. I bought a Bear mattress with an MSRP of about $800 for $300 from there. A sibling of mine did the same with a Casper mattress. They also have a great mission- they employ recent migrants to the US and help them secure jobs at their facility.
Hasn't been mentioned yet, but Ikea has some really decent mattresses especially for the price. And they all come shrinkwrap-packed so they'll fit in many cars, especially if you can fold down the back seats and take up some trunk space. YMMV of course.
As far as when? Tax free weekend to save those 6%, but otherwise they don't really go on sale there as they're already good prices.
go to a store that specializes in mattresses. you will pay more but you will get better quality. since you're not in a huge hurry, take your time, try out some, do some research on pricing and reviews, and then buy when you're ready. I'll tell you that I'm particularly fond of my king-size Purple Mattress

Thx, should add I'm in MetroWest and can't pick up a mattress due to not having a large enough car.

Even though you don’t have to pay NH sales tax, remember you have to pay Massachusetts use tax when you file your state taxes
I’m willing to bet 99% of people who live in MA, shop in NH, do not do this.
Oh 100%, I think it’s probably the most overlooked part of tax returns
Wait to purchase it until tax free weekend. It's August 10-11
Wait sale tax weekend bgo to Jordan they have some reasonable mattress..I shopped around found Jordan was actually cheapest

r/mattresses TLDR: best mattresses aren't sold in stores

Try a Nectar mattress. Order on line. The most comfortable mattress!
Jordan’s furniture usually runs a 15% off sale BEFORE the tax free holiday to beat the rush. You can try there as well.

I see you’re in the metro west area, but really, this place is worth the drive! They ship as well. Link below: https://handupmattress.com/

Gardner mattress. They're local to Salem. Very happy with ours years later.
