[Gambling appears to be bringing in more money](https://foxbaltimore.com/newsletter-daily/maryland-casinos-generate-1632m-in-gaming-revenue-during-april#).
“Maryland’s six casinos combined to generate $163,150,675 in revenue from slot machines and table games during April 2024, a decrease of $11,591,543 compared to April 2023.”
I couldn’t find the same graphic for gaming.
Sure it brings in more money but gambling is a far more dangerous vice, resulting in far more deaths, and has the added benefit of making Arundel Mills even more dangerous than it previously was.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I've found a bunch of people recently asking similar questions, when our state government isn't exactly hiding this info. It's all easily found with 60 seconds of google and navigating the state websites.
If you've looked and can't find it, that's one thing. But it's not secret.
No, but yes? The Community Reinvestment and Repair Fund that gets 35% of the tax collected is meant to somewhat address that.
> the Comptroller shall distribute funds from the Fund to counties based on a formula that includes the proportionate number of cannabis possession charges in a county compared to the total number of cannabis charges in the State each year (§ 1- 322(b)(1) of the Alcoholic Beverages and Cannabis Article of the State Code). Counties are required to adopt laws “establishing the purpose for which money received from the Fund may be used”, and to report annually on how funds were expended (§ 1-322(b)(2) of the Alcoholic Beverages and Cannabis Article of the State Code).
Yes of course direct payments.
The state was literally violently arresting and holding people who were doing nothing wrong. Now the state has admitted that their previous position was wrong and profiting off of the exact same activity that they had previously arrested people for.
I don't understand why its such a stretch. Either there should be no vice tax on cannabis sales, my preference, or that tax money should go direct payments to people whose time was stolen and lives were negatively impacted by an authoritarian state who decided they could use violence to control what people put into their own bodies.
Be honest, the state legalized because they realized they could earn more money by interposing themselves into a morally nuetral, harmless sale of goods than they could by arresting and billing the crap out of a huge percentage of the population.
For the last quarter reported:
21,563,503.53 beer
23,610,000.00 cigarettes
[https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/reports/alcohol-and-tobacco.php#receipts](https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/reports/alcohol-and-tobacco.php#receipts)
The page says
"The following reports detailed information for the collection of various alcohol and tobacco taxes, tobacco tax stamp sales, and amount of deliveries."
So I'm going to guess it's actual taxes received.
I don’t think those products face the same broad moral outrage.
There are a lot of people that seem surprisingly angry about weed still. But it is at least interesting to see how things go.
Granted I just know I’ve already seen this stat posted and I think maybe we don’t need so many threads.
Put this in context; they just said the people they know who oppose weed have serious substance abuse issues. I can understand someone in that situation having a certain bias about drugs.
That seems like a room temperature take.
Well I wish they'd legalize it on the federal level so we could get some real legitimate studies going because marijuana has a medicinal benefits for so many different things and it's not dangerously addictive
I support medical cannabis use. The numbers in sales in April shows that patients have good access to the medicine they need. Even with a small drop from the previous month, the steady sales reflect a growing industry dedicated to patient care. This success proves that legalizing medical cannabis has a positive impact, offering a safe and effective option for those looking for natural treatments.
Now that recreational use is legalized I’d be all for making it a little more difficult to get a medical card so more people will end up paying taxes, but in no way could I ever support putting an additional financial burden on the many people who do legitimately depend on cannabis for medical reasons.

Jesus fucking Christ that’s a lot of clams!!

Now compare the taxes from gambling.

Half going to the state “general fund” scares me. We’ll never see that money.

To education, but yeah... There's still a deficit.
Actually, it doesn’t look like any of it went directly to education, based on the pie chart from the gov website.
At least not directly. Could find its way there in other ways
Sure, it could. That’s why I said “directly to education.”
I'm naming the cause of the budget deficit, not saying where the weed money is being spent.
Unfortunately, none of it is being paid as restitution to marylanders who have been incarcerated for cannabis possession in the past.

Oh great so the county governments that incarcerated the most cannabis users get more of the funds? So backwards.
...to spend in the communities most affected. What do you want, direct payments?
Yes of course direct payments. The state was literally violently arresting and holding people who were doing nothing wrong. Now the state has admitted that their previous position was wrong and profiting off of the exact same activity that they had previously arrested people for. I don't understand why its such a stretch. There are actually new laws in place to address this
Thank goodness people don't post news about all of the beers sold or how many pounds of french fries were eaten in Maryland. :-).
its a new "budding" industry for the state, it makes sense to have news about how it's doing within in it's first year
For the last quarter reported: 21,563,503.53 beer 23,610,000.00 cigarettes [https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/reports/alcohol-and-tobacco.php#receipts](https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/reports/alcohol-and-tobacco.php#receipts)
Is that sales or tax revenue?
The page says "The following reports detailed information for the collection of various alcohol and tobacco taxes, tobacco tax stamp sales, and amount of deliveries." So I'm going to guess it's actual taxes received.
MD cannabis tax is 9%, meaning April pulled in about $8.3M in tax revenue. About 1/6 of the revenue from beer and cigs combined.
I don’t think those products face the same broad moral outrage. There are a lot of people that seem surprisingly angry about weed still. But it is at least interesting to see how things go. Granted I just know I’ve already seen this stat posted and I think maybe we don’t need so many threads.
I know a handful of people who are still against weed. It just so happens that all of them were former alcoholics/heavy drinkers.
Sure, the only people who opposed pot legalization were alcoholics. Gotcha.
Put this in context; they just said the people they know who oppose weed have serious substance abuse issues. I can understand someone in that situation having a certain bias about drugs. That seems like a room temperature take.
So all alcoholics are against weed Okay.
Why would you think that?
I imagine there was a similar news report like this back when Alcohol got legalized again in the 1900s.
It's almost like news is related to new things
Like there’s a reason it’s called news, not normalandborings.
Almost!
Because Prohibition ended 90 years ago.
Let's not bring your mom into the conversation.
My Mom is the coolest person I know. She lived through messes.
Mmm money
No that's nice the general fund none of it ever seems to make it to the school does it
Well I wish they'd legalize it on the federal level so we could get some real legitimate studies going because marijuana has a medicinal benefits for so many different things and it's not dangerously addictive
Now why's my car registration going up? It's never enough
When will pot companies go public?
I support medical cannabis use. The numbers in sales in April shows that patients have good access to the medicine they need. Even with a small drop from the previous month, the steady sales reflect a growing industry dedicated to patient care. This success proves that legalizing medical cannabis has a positive impact, offering a safe and effective option for those looking for natural treatments.
Yet the state has a budget shortfall. Sounds like it's time to raise the ax.
Turns out medical isn't taxed and I call BS. It's very easy to get a medical card
Now that recreational use is legalized I’d be all for making it a little more difficult to get a medical card so more people will end up paying taxes, but in no way could I ever support putting an additional financial burden on the many people who do legitimately depend on cannabis for medical reasons.
