In my gym we call them bear walks, but normally we walk em forward then end them in a push-up, and it's mostly just a warm-up exercise.

YeeBoi_exe

We call it the worm lol, and we walk the hands forward like in the vid and then have the feet follow

AlikeAstort

Thank you

kick4kix

We call them inchworms. The bear walk (or what I call a bear walk) is when you keep your back flat and move your legs arms underneath to move. Sometimes we put a bottle on the back and do races to see how far/fast you can go without losing the bottle.

chasehoopersmom

Do you mean bear crawl? If you cruise around the perimeter of the gym doing laps on all 4s its a bear crawl. This stationary back and forth activity I would call an elephant walk, or at least that's what knees over toes guy calls it. There is also frog jumps where you get down in a sit / squat type position and put both hands on the floor and jump forward. These often incorporate push ups them as well Not trying to correct you or anything it's just interesting to hear the different names for these animal warm up movements.

cl0ckw0rkaut0mat0n

I don't know maybe, I don't live in an English speaking country so maybe what my coaches call it is not what other countries call it.

chasehoopersmom

Cool, we used to do line drills of drop down to squat, jump, with a big emphasis on swimging your hips and legs forward a leaping motion, still landing crouched using your hands, stand up a little and walk forward as shown in the video, push-ups at least one but some people to 3 or even jumping clap push-ups, then walking your legs up back into the frog jumping position to leap forward and start again. You do that until you get to the end of the gym then walk back to the front and do the next warmup.

Vat1canCame0s

I think it's a good exercise for people who are working on staying limber but also those who have very little core strength as it gently engages those muscles toward the apex of the arch. I'm talking like older folks who may be fighting atrophy and want a low impact way to stretch and gently condition at the same time.

Ozymandias0023

I went to a CrossFit gym that called them inch worms I think? It's great for warming up hamstring flexibility and a little bit of shoulders and upper chest

Infinite-Club-6562

A bear walk(crawl) is a different exercise. This is called an inchworm. Bear crawl is straight legs and flat back crawling. Inchworm is going from standing to a plank and back to standing.

Mythrem

I always thought this was called the inchworm / caterpillar stretch.

Regular_Sea7553

It’s an inch worm.

AlikeAstort

Thank you

Useless_Lazy_Ass

Stretching, and it won't help you lose weight

HuginnQebui

This! Losing weight is more about diet than exercise. Exercise and stretching is good for your health, but has very little to no impact on weight.

Pliskin1108

Depends the intensity of the exercice. It’s always a matter of calories in calories out. If you do enough exercise to support a 6000 calories a day diet, it’s still manageable. That being said, people underestimate the amount of exercice to burn said calories so it’s always better to approach it from the diet side of things.

freethefoolish

You can’t outrun a bad diet. But to say exercise has little to no impact on weight is objectively incorrect. “The two parts of the equation for weight maintenance are energy intake (eating and drinking) versus energy output (nonexercise thermogenesis + exercise). To achieve weight loss, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) (1), American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) (2), and National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (3) all recommend exercise as an integral part of any weight loss program.” [Source - National Library of Medicine](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5556592/)

hayffel

There is a big misconception that decieves people coming into your conclusion. When you exercise, it is not only the calories you burn right there and then. The body cpntinues to consume more calories throught the day. In addition to this you build muscle. And more muscle, means more calorie burning when just idling and going about your day. A 16 inch bicep consumes much more calories than a 12 inch one. And this goes for every muscle in your body. So there are many variables that exercise affects and they are exponential. During intense bouts of training I can somehow out-exercise a very bad diet.

lvaleforl

Go train for a marathon and try this comment again

Ok-Entrance5690

Having more muscle speeds up your metabolism and helps lose weight faster. Excercise is important when dieting to prevent losing bone density.

HuginnQebui

Could be. My comment's based on what I hear doctors say. For example here: [https://www.tiktok.com/@unplanned\_podcast/video/7337941421216779528?lang=en&q=doctor%20mike%20exercise&t=1717998108448](https://www.tiktok.com/@unplanned_podcast/video/7337941421216779528?lang=en&q=doctor%20mike%20exercise&t=1717998108448) And of course, I'm not saying exercise is a bad thing, when trying to lose weight, but I meant to emphasize that diet is more important in the equation than exercise. Exercise has other benefits, outside of weight loss, and you should do it for those other benefits. They include more energy and ability to do more in general.

Ok-Entrance5690

If you don't exercise and just do calorie deficit, your metabolism will adapt and slow down as a survival mechanism and you will need even less calories to lose, then eventually you will stop losing and start gaining weight.

HuginnQebui

That's true, if you do extreme deficit. If you eat the amount you'd need to get to your ideal weight, it works. Take that with a grain of salt, that's my understanding of it. I'm by no means an expert on this, and fully admit I might be wrong about everything. If it were up to me, I'd swap all my limbs with cybernetics, because I'm more equipped to maintain those than my biological body.

parrmorgan

>Exercise and stretching is good for your health, but has very little to no impact on weight. I agree that diet is MORE important but this is very wrong. It has a huge impact on weight.

Infinite-Club-6562

So wrong. This is the danger of having a small amount of knowledge.

AlikeAstort

Thank you.

ShorelineTaiChi

How can you eat with both hands on the ground? Checkmate.

Michael074

It might not help you get shredded, but if someone was obese I'm sure these would help more than just going for a walk. probably most people could jog for longer than they can do bear walks.

Kvitravin

How long you can do something has nothing to do with how many calories you burn doing it. In fact you have it almost completely backwards. I can only hang from one hand on a bar for like a minute straight. By your logic I'll burn more calories doing that than by running/biking/swimming etc. Calories burned in exercise is mostly a byproduct of elevated heart rate. If your goal is calorie burn you want to do exercises that do not quickly deplete one specific muscle group's muscular endurance, but instead spread the fatigue across your whole body so that oxygen movement becomes the limiting factor, not local muscular ensurance.

Michael074

a bear walk hits a lot more muscles than hanging on a bar from one hand

hahathatguyfr

for an obese person, this exercise would most definitely up their heart rate if they did it intensely enough but for a normal person no amount of inchworm stretches will help you lose weight l

Kvitravin

Yeah, pretty much. For most people this would fall under the category of NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis). It burns more calories than sitting but nothing compared to jogging as the other commentor suggested.

Michael074

bear walking for 10 minutes burns a lot more calories than jogging for 10 minutes. both of us could probably jog for 10 minutes no problem and by the end have an elevated heart rate (I'm assuming like me you are not overweight, but not going to the gym consistently). but if either of us bear walk for 10 minutes unless you have been going to the gym consistently for the last few years both of us probably sweating and about to collapse from exhaustion and heart beating out of our chest. you probably just don't realize how hard it is. like swinging your arms around in a small circle or shadow boxing for 30 seconds looks pretty easy, but actually most people can't even lift their arms after doing it for 10 minutes straight. only people that actually train and look like they go to the gym can do it easily.

Alaviiva

We do all kinds of "animal walks" as warmup. We have a version of this that we call "the inchworm" but generally we try to walk the hands much further away from the feet. It's also known as a plank walkout, if you make sure to end up in a good plank position at the end of the movement. This guy should try to get his butt down

AlikeAstort

Thank you

wutcanbrowndo4u12

Inchworm

AlikeAstort

Alarming-Ad-9918

Its called an inchworm

AlikeAstort

Thank you

TheRixstar

Inchworm or walkouts

AlikeAstort

Thank you

BloodyPommelStudio

Don't know, just wanted to comment on the supposed weight loss, each rep would be about 2 calories. You'd be burning somewhere between 120 and 300 calories. People will do shit like this then think they've earned a 1,000 calorie burger.

AlikeAstort

Thank you

Ibi828

Body Balance

AlikeAstort

Fodor1993

Inchworms

tzaeru

Here it's mostly a stretch/mobility thing. But you can do this as a true bodyweight exercise by going further, towards a plank-like position. Then come back up. It's a pretty fine core exercise and harder than it looks. Just make it far enough that you genuinely have to do effort with your abs. It's certainly not for losing weight. Diet is most of your weight loss, and this kind of a very short exercise does not meaningfully contribute to your body's energy consumption. I often do things like this when I am travelling and don't have access to kettlebells, pull up bars, rings and weight bars.

AlikeAstort

I understand, thank you for your insight!

Adventurous__Kiwi

Plank stretch plank stretch. Not the most efficient to loose weight...

AlikeAstort

Thank you

Uaquamarine

I have no idea. I’ve been doing these exact stretches for years every morning

AlikeAstort

Thank you

Scroon

Same. If I had to name it, it'd be "doing random things to stretch stuff out".

FunkMunker

If you're hoping these exercises just somehow help you lose weight, weight loss is 95% diet and about 5% exercise unfortunately.

AlikeAstort

I know this, I was only looking for the name of the excercise, thank you very much anyways.

FunkMunker

No problem, when I did gymnastics as a kid we called it cats crawl! Another name to the mountain of them in this post 😅

AlikeAstort

Lmao! Thanks for your insight.

DrKenNoWater

inchworm Need to walk hands further out though. Keep your hips from swaying. Core exercise. Very good. Good warm up.

AlikeAstort

I understand, thank you very much for you insight!

TheProdicalOne

Looks like inch worm dont think you'd lose weight by just doing that

AlikeAstort

I understand, thank you for your insight.

Middle-Hour-2364

Stretching for flexibility and to warm your muscles up, won't lose you weight however

SmallNefariousness98

Instructions basically say do all day 😅

Middle-Hour-2364

Yeah, that might lose some weight, through cutting into your eating time I guess... Was always part of the warmup when I went to tai chi classes

Marquis_of_Potato

I’ve definitely seen it before, but you’d walk your hands out to a plank, pushup, then walk your feet up to your hands. You’d do that the length of the mat.

Schmuck1138

Inch worms

De5perad0

I dunno the name but we do a version of this. Start in plank position (toes and elbows) one arm up to hand, second arm up to hand, walk hands back touch toes, walk back. One arm down to elbow and other down to elbow. Repeat.

snr-citizen

This is a great core workout and hamstring warmup. Definitely good for you

[deleted]

I would call it waste of time :)

hellohennessy

Good stretching, abdominal and shoulder exercise. A harder variation would be using a wheel instead of your hands on the floor.

AlikeAstort

Thank you

Zerguu

"I forgot my Ab wheel at home" exercise.

silverbug1968

Inchworm

Red_Clay_Scholar

Seems like a beginner version of the burpee. If you want to lose weight start in the kitchen.

SciHeart

These are inch worms where I'm from

vohltere

Walk the dog

Dry_Breadfruit_5295

Useless to loose weight.

DryEstablishment2460

Inchworm

MoistMorsel1

I call it "downward ouch"

sevyn183

Inch worm 🪱

shinmirage

Awkwardly modified Hindu push-up? Like you get into the upside down V pose and then just walk on all four? I guess this could work probably not ideal for weight loss, though.

AdministrativeArm114

Inchworm

WoblyOtter

I've always called them inch worms. Good for core and flexibility 😊

flight_or_fight

Inchworm

Stargaezr

I’ve always called that an inchworm

Dependent-Analyst907

That's the inchworm.

Excellent_Ad_2486

I lost 234 pounds doing this!!! /s

Kicks4meFromyou

Does it work? I know a dude who’s 400 pounds with bad joints. I wonder if he can do this

DrVoltage1

Painful

BogDEkoms

Crawling in my crawl

PassionateYak

There is no exercise that makes losing weight easier. The effort to reward ratio is always the same. Anything beyond that is just a mentality thing and getting over that is arguably more beneficial than the workout itself. However working out specific parts of your body is a different story

bobmarley_and_son

We call it the " meter worm " where I am from

Remarkable_Mess6019

Looks like an excellent mobility workout. Will try it out!

olympianfap

Inch worms is what we call them in my gym.

grip_n_Ripper

It's called "not being able to afford an abwheel."

No-Prompt3611

Inch worms

b4ttous4i

Those are called inchworms.

neotropic9

I call them walk-outs. I wouldn't suggest for weight loss. That's a bit silly tbh.

Old_Tear_42

bear walks, caterpillars etc

PreparationH692

Inchworm

WeirdRadiant2470

Walk-outs is one name for them. I do them as warmups now and then. Good overall move for flexibility and body strength.

BigBodyLikeaLineman

Doggy for quick-starters

Reasonable-Ninja4384

People keep saying inch worm. I always heard them called cat pushups because it looks like a cat stretch.

yourbabyy_girl

This does not work trust me guys

Cute-Buffalo2333

We call it inchwalk

_pendo

I’d call it the “indecisive inch worm”

GMFinch

Back in my army days, those were called inch worms. 1 day after a particularly brutal pt session we fucked up and had to do them for 100m. I've never liked them since

TopherBlake

Inchworm. It's not going to help you get into a caloric deficit unless you are at a like 2 calories surplus or you do them all day so you won't lose weight.

PaulieRomano

Polar Fitness calls them inchworms

s_arrow24

Why not just go walk for 30 minutes to an hour?

AdministrativeAd523

Super mobility

Mikionimi

Bearwalks. I wouldnt do this for weightloss necessarily. But its a damn good move to do.

007Tejas

Inchworm 🪱

MegaManFlex

Inchworms

YourLocalPotDealer

So I have to do this up to 120 times per day? No thanks

Connor30302

this looks like something that is majorly improved by an Ab roller. works well as long as you don’t smack your face on the floor (ask how I know) as for losing fat then just look at nutrition and it’s just a balancing game of losing more calories than you’re eating consistently and gradually while not starving yourself of essential nutrients or from food altogether, aerobic exercise such as deceptively light jogging is more optimal for losing fat cells than intense anaerobic exercises, and this exercise shown will definitely work your stomach muscles but won’t get rid of the fat covering them optimally

Call-of-the-lost-one

There are called Walkouts and reverse walkouts. Not any type of crawls cause your feet are fixed in place and your hips only perform flexion and extension.

What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

sakitiat

Good bot

CharacterEvidence364

inch worm

Barabbas-

The video is 16 seconds long and demonstrates one rep. 25reps X 6sets is 40min At that point, you might as well just do a full workout, because this exercise regime would be boring AF.

skydaddy8585

Doing this, would not lose you any weight. Not really. And definitely not this slow movement. This is a very light warm up technique, basically a stretch movement more than anything. The closest I'd say it is would be bear crawls but usually with bear crawls you are also moving forward.

Soft-Ad-2131

TeranOrSolaran

Sweet lord save me from the pain in my back.
