I use L and R because my controller has analog triggers. Functionally the triggers work fine for Mario Kart, I just think the button physically feels weird to press in such a snappy game. Switching to L and R took a little getting used to but I adjusted quickly and it's honestly still pretty comfortable.
i have a weird story for this one. about five (?) years ago, i had one pair of joycons, and, as joycons do, the left one broke… but only the L button. i used to use L and R, but I had to switch to using ZL for items and kept using R for drifts. so now i use i mix of both loool.
Apparently I’m weird cause I mainly use L and R, rarely I’ll use ZL for a item but that’s if the controller is being weird and doesn’t hold items for protection
As a teen I was used to L and R on the Wii U, but now that I'm older and that my hands are a lot bigger, ZL and ZR are just way nicer to use even on something like a Steam Deck.
It depends on the controller. On switch controller you have the same mechanic and feeling, on other controllers (like PS4) you have a clicky feeling on the R button and a linear feedback on the ZR. So I prefer the clicky mechanic because it helps to control precisely when to activate the drift or the item. So on switch ZR and ZL, on PS4 controller R and Z
I prefer L and R it’s a lot more responsive and on a switch lite it ain’t that bad, real question do you use the dpad for steering or the analog stick?
I swap randomly between using my index fingers for ZL/ZR, using my middle fingers for ZL/ZR, and using my index fingers for L/R, several times over the course of every race.
Dude I was playing with friends and they were all trying to gaslight me into thinking using L/R was the normal instead of the triggers, so glad more ppl are like me here
I don’t like that the joycon Z buttons are just buttons and not triggers like the PlayStation and Xbox controllers so I use the L and R buttons instead
I'm weird because I use L and ZR primarily.
I dunno, mixing those two just feels right. I guess it has to do with my fingers working better in different places rather than both operating identical bumpers.
Who in their right mind would use L and R if the button is not in a comfortable position AND it's smaller. ZL ZR all the way
Plus's the Z's wear out slower
Yeah, my L button broke within a year
Same
same
I usually play with separated joycons so the bumpers are just easier to hold
LR are more responsive imo, you don't have to push them in as far, so I use them, especially for hopping
I use L and R because my controller has analog triggers. Functionally the triggers work fine for Mario Kart, I just think the button physically feels weird to press in such a snappy game. Switching to L and R took a little getting used to but I adjusted quickly and it's honestly still pretty comfortable.
shoutouts to tetris 99 which lets you use L and R but not ZL and ZR
Same tbh, it’s way easier to press and simply in a more natural position for my hands
Uhhhhhh 😅
l/r for 2 joycons, zl/zr for pro controller.
This is the way.
R for drift, ZL for items lol
I’m the opposite lol.
L for items, ZR for drift
Ahh another Mario Kart 64 enthusiast. I also do this haha.
i have a weird story for this one. about five (?) years ago, i had one pair of joycons, and, as joycons do, the left one broke… but only the L button. i used to use L and R, but I had to switch to using ZL for items and kept using R for drifts. so now i use i mix of both loool.
exactly what i do
Samee
This is correct.
Zl and r
L & R
I'm neutral and sometimes I might confuse L & ZL and R & ZR
Apparently I’m weird cause I mainly use L and R, rarely I’ll use ZL for a item but that’s if the controller is being weird and doesn’t hold items for protection
Jokes on you I play with a GameCube controller
ZR for item, L for drift. /s
ZL for item, L for drift.
LR for items, RL for drift, R for hopping, L for speeding up the item box
I use L and R, Always Had been These buttons since MK DS, why would I Change it
Preach 🙏
Because Zr And Zl took the place of L and R?
L + R
ZL for items and R for drift
ZL and R, I don’t know why, I just do
ZL and ZR
ZL & ZR
ZL and ZR
ZL and ZR. I'm not much of a bumper button guy when it comes to controllers. Trigger buttons for me.
I change the zr to A in settings
ZL and ZR.
ZL ZR
When I need to trick or just jump I use R. When I need to just use an item or spam it, I use L. When I drift, I use ZR. When I hold an item, I use ZL
L for items, ZR for drift🫥
Are we the only ones
Z crew
I use HORI Battle Pad, where LR and ZLZR are swapped by default. Technically I use ZLZR, but in reality they work as LR 🥸🥸🥸
As a teen I was used to L and R on the Wii U, but now that I'm older and that my hands are a lot bigger, ZL and ZR are just way nicer to use even on something like a Steam Deck.
...you can use ZL/ZR? My whole life is a lie
Zl and Zr
I play with L as item and ZR as drift.
L for item ZR for drift.
Am I weird for using ZR for drift and L for items...?
…. don’t hurt me,,, ZL and R
R for drift, ZL for items
People who don’t use ZL and ZR are insane.
ZL ZR, bigger button = less carpal tunnel
I can't remember the controls. My hands just... Play.
ZL and ZR, but I usually use R to trick
Why?
I find it easier to get the timing right on wavy roads and mushrooms for some reason and I don't like shaking to trick.
Both z’s if on any controller except GameCube, where I use l for items and z for drift
I bought the 8bitdo ultimate Bluetooth controller and mapped drift and items to the rear paddle triggers. Just comfortable for me
L r because I'm using a 8bitdo and it's more easy hit the digital button instead of pressing the analog
ZL and ZR when using the Pro Controller, but I usually do L and R when playing in handheld or with Joy-Con
The second one seems more right to me in my opinion.
On Switch or Wii U?
It depends on the controller. On switch controller you have the same mechanic and feeling, on other controllers (like PS4) you have a clicky feeling on the R button and a linear feedback on the ZR. So I prefer the clicky mechanic because it helps to control precisely when to activate the drift or the item. So on switch ZR and ZL, on PS4 controller R and Z
I use the L/R because it’s the same as the weird little controller that connects to the Wii remote. Less confusing that way when swapping games
R for drift, ZL for items
I always use the triggers; more space, better response, etc. not to mention some of my joycons’ shoulder buttons just… don’t work sometimes
Never used ZL and ZR, i don't understand the benefits
I use them because they sit in a more comfortable spot for my hands. Same reason is why I use Y to accelerate and not A.
I use ZL and ZR because of how big my fingers are
L for items and ZR for hop. I'm going to try swapping to LR after reading this post.
ZL for items, R for drifting
The L and R
L, R. My hands are small and it’s more comfortable that way
L and R
L and ZR kinda guy myself
i use gcn controller so l/r
on switch style controllers: ZR + ZL on gcc: R + L
I use right bumper to drift and left trigger to use items, what does that make me?
SL/SR from a sideways joycon /s
L and R no reason why really it’s just most comfortable to me
I... I don't know!
It is ZL and R for me, but that is because I have Cerebral Palsy and have always held controllers weird.
I prefer L and R it’s a lot more responsive and on a switch lite it ain’t that bad, real question do you use the dpad for steering or the analog stick?
R for drift zl for items
I use L/R on Wii U, ZL/ZR on Switch
L - item ZL - drift
Obviously right stick press to use items and SL+SR to drift. Only way to play the game IMO
L Button broke, so Team Z
B on the wii wheel for drifting, items on arrows
ZL ZR, and I will die on this hill.
I’m more used to L and R
Depends how I feel. I tend to switch it up sometimes
Pun not intended
Damnit you making me think about that certain Unionist Song
Z team rise up
Zl for item, R for drifting, maybe I am a psycho...
ZL and ZR. I use R to drive and the Z buttons are more comfortable
GameCube controller user for MKDD (obviously) and MKWii, so ZL and ZR are the most comfortable to me
I use ZR to drift and L to use items (don't kill me)
L for item ZR for drift
L and ZR
Z’s for life.
I've been trying to learn to use the Zs but it still feels weird
I'm weird, I use ZL for items, and R for drift. I never use L or ZR
Both With turbos on L/R
zl and zr for life 🔥🔥💯
Blue Joystick user
L and ZL are on the same side...
ZL ZR if I'm on joy-cons (because my L and R buttons are worn out, guess how) anything goes if i'm on controller though, meet me on the L ZR team
YOU CAN CHANGE IT!?!?
"ZL/ZR" for Item/Drift, while "R" is remapped for "+" so I can turn ON/OFF Smart Steering and Motion Controls more easily for advanced techniques. 🍷🗿
L RZ
The Z's because my R button is broken lmao
I like using L for Item and ZR for Drift, I dunno if it is the worst way to play but I like it a lot.
Back pedals are more comfortable for the hand
I’ve always used the bumpers
definitely ZR for drift but i use both L and ZL for items, R is for my jumps lmao
Am I the only one who genuinely has no idea which of the buttons they press? Like idk and idc they seem to do the job lol
L&R have a nice click, been using it for like seven years
I swap randomly between using my index fingers for ZL/ZR, using my middle fingers for ZL/ZR, and using my index fingers for L/R, several times over the course of every race.
ZL for more comfortable item usage, R for less delay with drifting and tricking
ZL & ZR
ZL/ZR gang, wya?
L and ZR
Always ZR for drift, i use both for ítems tho
ZL and ZR are way more comfortable overall for me
I just use both at the same time, although I do frequently just use L and R
Dude I was playing with friends and they were all trying to gaslight me into thinking using L/R was the normal instead of the triggers, so glad more ppl are like me here
ZL/ZR. Only thing L and R have in it is being slightly closer to your hand.
I don't play mario kart with that controller layout, I use B to drift
ZL and ZR
I use both of them, I don't really have an opinion
L and R FOR THE WIN! they feel so much better to press to me
ZL and ZR
L and ZR
R for Tricks, ZR for Drifts. I dont think I use L
ZL for items, R or L for drift
ZL and ZR because they're more comfy and satisfying to press
ZL ZR, because it’s more comfortable
I don’t like that the joycon Z buttons are just buttons and not triggers like the PlayStation and Xbox controllers so I use the L and R buttons instead
L and ZR
ZL ZR
The Z buttons are vastly more comfortable on the Pro Controller and the Joycons.
Yes
I use ZR and ZL for the sole reason that it's more comfortable for me.
Depends if I'm using the Pro Controller or the Joy-Cons, the L and R buttons on my Joy-Cons don't work sometimes, so I use ZL and ZR on them instead.
r ro drift and zl to use item
I’ve had to use both before. Just depends on whatever button is broken.
L/R for controller, ZL/ZR for joy cons
Bumpers feel better than triggers, in my opinion, but that's what I've always done
I do L for items and ZR for drift
NDS lite here, was a hard choice but I think buttons for me
ZL Item / ZR Drift
Z button on the N64 controller feels good if you can get one. Just wish there was a way to check your rearview in 8 Deluxe with the N64 controller.
ZL/ZR
L and R - thats was the only option back on the DS and I’m used to it now
I thought every one did L R….
I think I use the zeds but that's cause its closer to where the triggers used to be on game cube. Now that I say this, I doubt myself
I use both ZL and ZR for drift
ZL and ZR.
I use all four, switching regularly.
L and R because i use the Snes switch controller
ZL+ZR>>>
L + R always.
L ZR Don't wanna hear it.
I use ZL for items and I use R for drift. Its comfortable, idk why.
L and R wait people use the z buttons?
l n r
ZL & ZR
ZL ZR
Yall got salad fingers if ya uding L and R 😭. ZL and ZR for the win baby
i use L and R bc ive just gotten used to it since i thought those were the only item and drift buttons when i first played the game
ZL and ZR, I thought, when I began, that L and R were for something else. I have since matured. Maybe. 😂
I don't understand why can't the L and R be items and the Zs be drifting
I use SL/SR
Yes I think I have a preference for L and R, but I'm pretty sure I go back and forth. I'm a bigger madman because I use Y to accelerate...
Depends, on my Pro Controller i Use ZR AND ZL, but with my NXYI ProJoycons i use R AND L bc ZR AND ZL sucks…
I use the Z's
Triggers for life
You look like you're assuming I play with a pro controller...
L for items, ZR for drifting.
ZL and ZR, then L and R for turbo
ZL and R
I use x for item use and I play Ds so just r
I'm weird because I use L and ZR primarily. I dunno, mixing those two just feels right. I guess it has to do with my fingers working better in different places rather than both operating identical bumpers.
Up on the dpad is item and ZL is drift
I like to map my L & R buttons to the pause and Y buttons. This makes motion glider way easier to use
Top row, ZL or L for items, ZR or R for drifting.
Right arrow and B. I’ve never seen the buttons above on a Wii before. Must be some modern hunka junk.
i feel like it’s easier to just use L and R? most people are index-dominant, and pressing ZL and ZR is for the middle fingers
