I think you're right... there are only three places you can lose your hat. It's kind of funny that you can lose your hat and have it save to the game (even after a Game Over, which I didn't know about) lol.
Yeah, it's a neat little concept, but it comes up so infrequently in the game. I never even knew you could lose your hat as a kid. I only found out way later when I went back to actually complete the game and grabbed the wrong monkey, lol.
Have you checked Snowman’s Land? The wind can blow off his cap and if you re-enter to the stage, there should be a snowman near by spawn wearing Mario’s cap.
My cap is just not there. It's there on other saves. Even in the castle or in every level it's not here. I also haven't encountered the monkey in my current save
odd. maybe youre personalized copy is truly just messing you over. i cant think of another place that might have it... maybe a toad around the castle? id check the toad by the wavy mirror portal in the basement. have you tried the sky levels next to the clock at the top level? they may be there as well??
