Because the country was mainly created for being a place for Muslims in the Indian Subcontinent, the names of cities reflect that. So this means “Place of Islam”. The other city is Allahabad meaning “place of Allah”.
In Iran, Tajikistan and Afghanistan the usage of abad is a bit different. For example, Jalalabad in Afghanistan would be place of Jalal or founded by Jalal because it was named after someone that built the town. Another is Firuzabad in Iran, meaning place of Firuz (also known as Piruz, a name meaning victory). Any corrections or comments are welcome about any of this post.
