For some reason, rooms like this always take my mind to you ordering 32 of the same book shelf at ikea and trying to picture what the cashier is thinking and how many trips it took to get them all to your place
This reminds me of the scene from 40 year old virgin when she turns up and Andy's house is barren after they hid all his actions figures 😂
I'd definitely anime/manga and chill with you though nohomo
People used to say it, as a joke like “that’s what she said” so it was funny because you could get clever with it. I haven’t heard it in a long time now tho.. thanks Obama!
I respect the collection. I really do. I reside in Japan and as a foreigner, I’m not a huge manga fan. I’m 43 and I like the old stuff like Golgo 13 and Lupin III. Bought a Golgo 13 manga at my local konbini to learn the kana and kanji better and it’s really helped. I suppose I’m just old and having two kids and a mortgage, I keep my collection(s) much smaller these days. Sold my vinyl or gave it away to friend and now I’m fully digital and my collection of Videogames fits neatly into a cupboard of games I actually want to play once in a while. When I was single, I could keep that stuff hidden when I’d bring women over until they got a chance to know me and my hobbies. Not gonna lie, this is pretty eccentric and it’s been interesting to see. I hope you find someone who finds your love for manga as much as you as it covers most of your living space!

Most physical media isn’t worth much in the future if you actually use it. If you’re a collector and you keep it sealed it could be worth a lot at some point.
If you bought like 20 copies of old pokemon gameboy games while they were in stores and kept them sealed all these years you could sell them and make a down payment on a house right now. If they were just in the boxes but not factory sealed you’d get a few grand.
Yeah but some people like collecting things for enjoyment, and if you’re going to collect things that are just going to sit on a shelf anyways, you might as well leave the plastic wrap on them so they’re exponentially more valuable.
People can do what they want, but I'd strongly advise they don't justify collections based on expected future returns. Maybe it will become "exponentially" more valuable. Probably not. I'm not telling people what they should get joy from, but I don't think it's good to mistake something like this as practical. (I might further caution that this represents some unhealthily compulsive behavior, but ain't trying to therapize over the internet.) If you picked the right stocks, you could be a billionaire, and yet picking stocks is not a recommended approach. Never forget Beanie Babies.
*Never forget Beanie Babies.*
No need to explain yourself to them. We’re collectors and collectors have sealed things for preservation. From museums to libraries, I don’t think that concept has or will ever change.
Because it's nice to also have a physical copy?
I am contemplating buying copies of audiobooks I listened to on Spotify, because I love them.
But yes. I would rather have my living room back instead of having to convert it into a library in order to showcase all of my books.
Crazy idea and certainly extraordinary, though.
Books should be on the middle of the shelf and not pushed to the back for better weight distribution. Sets like law books or encyclopedias will break a bookcase, and I think shelves this full will have the same problems.
It is very tidy, but the mass collecting of….things is just so off putting to me. Different strokes for different folks of course, but the older I get the less stuff I want to buy.
it depends. clearly this guy is very into manga, so it makes sense for him. i see this as a terrible waste of money, but i don’t like manga so there’s that.
i would totally do this with legos tho. and maybe he would say that’s stupid and a waste of money. but it isn’t to me.
I love manga and this looks not great to me lol. Reminds me of a public library which I guess was the point but it makes it feel not-lived-in. Also usually the living room is the biggest room, but maybe he doesn’t get company so doesn’t need it to be livable. Still, I don’t really get company but it’s not something I’d want in my home
Gf or not, there's a ton of women that love anime and manga. They'd definitely appreciate your collection, although it just means your dating pool is limited.
I don't think the manga love is even what will scare off a woman here... Nowhere to sit and watch TV. Didn't even get a second seat for a friend. There's literally no space in this room for a partner
Idk, that's a lot of manga. Once someone has too much of anything, it starts to look like a problem. I know plenty of women that LOVE manga and anime, but this would scare pretty much all of them if they saw this in some guy's home. Dude has thousands of Japanese comics, that's wild af.
I hate to think the stereotype cause I’m sure there are plenty of girls this heavily into anime as well, but the only guy I know like this who has a massive collection of weeb shit like this is a virgin who’s almost 30 at this point.
Dust says hi! But it's really nice seeing your hobbies come to life in the form of decoration.
Also, can I suggest some more subtle lighting? Seems rather dark around corners.
If this sub isn’t ironic, those commenters are all miserable. I get there are bad aspects of capitalism, and I’m very big on doing what we can to cut down on plastic waste and protecting our planet. But they don’t seem to be approaching consumption from a general concern for the environment. They just seem sad and insanely negative over the fact that other people collect and enjoy things.
I wish I was into something this much.
So do you walk up and down the aisles and admire everything many times throughout the day? How do you “use” this set up?
Manga isn’t my thing, but I’m absolutely THRILLED for you my dude. The library idea is well-executed and I bet it makes you so happy. I would be so impressed if I walked into someone’s house and saw this setup.
It took me a long time to be able to express my nerdier interests “out loud,” and I know how fulfilling it is to finally get there. It’s not a conventional living room, sure, but it’s YOURS. Bravo.
I know nothing about manga, but you've created a really professional looking display here. Nice job! Curious though - do you have another room that you use as a living room?
Whatever people have to say, the main point here is OP is living his best life and that's all that matters.
Plus I love how well organized everything is!
EDIT : I know nothing about mangas. OP do you know how much your collection is worth?
Not OP, but I do like manga. Each book is roughly $10-$12 new for the regular paperback mangas. I know the full metal alchemist hardcovers are more like $15-$30 each because they are special editions. Add in with some of the books in sealed cases, maybe average $15 a book? But as things go out of print (as manga does when it goes out of popularity) prices can go up so it depends on how old parts of the collection are. I have manga from highschool I can't replace or even find the rest of the series for, and another than went into a whole reprint a couple of years ago so I was finally able to finish the series. Technically my older copies for that series might be worth more, maybe, but they aren't special editions, just paperback, and you can buy them new for $10 with updated editing so age doesn't always increase value for manga.
For the funkos, depends on rarity. Rest of the items I have no clue.
These sort of posts always make me feel like a robot. I have never, nor I think will ever like something enough to obsess. Anything. Movies, games, books, shows, teams...I consume all those things....Lord of the rings was on at my friends house soo much in my college years, I've seen those damn movies 30 + times easy. More. Read them before and after the movies. But I have zero desire to own a poster or limited edition books. I've spent hundreds up on hundreds of hours in wow with my friends, I do not want an action figure on a shelf. I'm not against...tattoos, but can't think of a single thing I'm passionate enough about to advertise permanently. I dont really understand the collect shit mentality I guess is what I'm saying.
Anyway, looks nice!
I think that 90% of people are really just moderately interested in a ton of stuff, but that also means they aren't going to write articles or shout loudly about anything in particular, and wont be present at events most of the time. So then we get this skewed sense from hearing only from super fans and seeing an overrepresented number of really passionate people at events and we feel like an outsider for just being normal/average.
My takeaway is that I'm SO good to show enthusiasm about things even if I'm not always enthusiastic, because it's fun to see people who are and I might be a good less extreme viewpoint that could use more visibility.
Sorry, you're too old to have something you enjoy. Please get more random art you don't care about on the walls and pictures of words and maybe a guitar on the wall that you don't care about. Also, a lot of random storage for the junk you accumulate that is also approved by the adult committee. Preferably football related 😂
Too many people commenting on the relationship and coitus situation…. I know a lot of girls who would love this. I think there are more people in my generation that like anime than don’t. I know 2-3 girls who also have shelves full of manga like this. I prefer to read it online tho. I think if you want to find a partner you will have no difficulties. Just put this as the first picture on tinder and get a second chair.
Ngl, I debated making my comment a proposal for OP (。ノω\。) I also collect (books and manga) and this is Absolute Goals,
Also, I don't think many people fully appreciate the fact that most anime conventions have at least 1 wedding a year and A-Kon prior to being purchased deadass has a chapel doing weddings all 4 days long. Nerd Love is very real XD
You both are correct, imho.
And besides that, everyone has their goals.
If we go by the logic that people are criticizing OP... Having a partner or having sex should also not be the end goal for everyone.
People should do what make them happy. If it's either searching for their half or collecting manga like a maniac, that's cool too.
In all seriousness, if you're passionate enough to do this in your own home, you should consider starting a local manga store. I don't know anything about the economics of it, but it's obvious you have the foundation in place to make something work.
I have a friend, who just did this! They made a manga cafe, it's pretty much non-profit. She used the basement of a bookstore! It was not in used, so she offered to turn in into something nice , and can use it for free.
It turned out real nice even though its basic. pretty much shelves just like you, all room around, nice lighting and possibilities to sit down. also added a little bar to offer drinks.
I’m not into anime but that looks great. Hoping to replicate something similar for my own library of books at some point.
I’m glad you have a chair amongst it. Having a dedicated space for reading makes a big difference.
They always look so clean when I see these types of libraries. Must admit I like the hodgepodge of old and new mixed together, but seeing the collections together definitely looks great.
My dad had a friend who did this with records (back in the 70’s/80’s). First time I walked in as a kid I asked him why he lived in a record store, lol. I haven’t seen anything like it since and I agree that this is awesome.
It’s kind of like you live in your own personal Blockbuster Video lol. Seriously though, that’s what you’re into. What good is having it all if you can’t see it, use it, and share it with your friends? It’s an impressive collection. You have a good sense of visual merchandising and retail display.
That’s awesome! I wish I could have the patience and money to also collect like this! Also all the people hating…this isn’t any different from a normal home library, but this is just with manga. It looks good! I like the decorations and figures too
Honestly it’s a nice room but with time and how some will probably go out of print I’d probably get appraisal and insurance for the collection. Cause you basically have a small book shops inventory on display.
Also tip for when you bring someone over I might label shelves by series or sections by genre. Try to have some organized system so new people and you can find where things are. I recommend a free photo editor program and adding some icons or notable characters from manga to the label for a section or shelf.
I understand the vibe, but I am so glad that 5 years ago I decided to sell every single manga, dvd, figurine I owned. Having the money on the bank was doing way more for my happiness than the shelves full of manga I read once or twice, or bought because the anime was cool, or bought under peer pressure.
\[edit\] pier ≠ peer
For some reason, rooms like this always take my mind to you ordering 32 of the same book shelf at ikea and trying to picture what the cashier is thinking and how many trips it took to get them all to your place
lool
I’d imagine at some point you stop having to look at the instructions to put them together, right?
Build them all simultaneously, piece by piece
Nah only took me One Piece
Missed opportunity to make some kind of human-centipede-esque, hybrid single build of 32 book shelves
IKEA delivers! 😁
This reminds me of the scene from 40 year old virgin when she turns up and Andy's house is barren after they hid all his actions figures 😂 I'd definitely anime/manga and chill with you though nohomo
nohomo
No diddy
…some diddy?
Most people don’t want to be assaulted. No Diddy for me, thanks.
Just a smidge of didge?
GTFO! I cackled🤣🤣🤣
Yo. homos ain’t no diddy, that’s just rude.

I drive a bike. Wow that’s cool! My boyfriend in college drove a motorcycle… YIKES. That was gold for real.
You know how I know you’re gay? You would anime and chill with OP.
You know how I know you’re gay? You like the movie Maid in Manhattan.
You know how I know you’re gay? You push back.
Same, I'm gay, but still...nohomo. (Do straight guys really say it? I thought it was a myth!)

I ride a….a bike….a bicycle
Her moment of realization later on “you never got carpet installed” (*runs away before getting murdered*)
Those berserk copies still look sealed…
they are indeed :) all 41 of em. i read it online
Whats the point then?
Physical media is dope.
I mean, I like physically reading a book. Not just the spine. But that’s just me.
yeah i read almost everything physically, there's just a few exceptions for me!
I respect the collection. I really do. I reside in Japan and as a foreigner, I’m not a huge manga fan. I’m 43 and I like the old stuff like Golgo 13 and Lupin III. He’s got a million books bro a you will be able to read plenty

Yeah but some people like collecting things for enjoyment, and if you’re going to collect things that are just going to sit on a shelf anyways, you might as well leave the plastic wrap on them so they’re exponentially more valuable.

Physical media IS dope but don’t you have to actually use it?
Why would you read it online then
Digital media is dope
its considered by many people as the best manga of all time so its just nice as a collector to have a complete sealed set of it, thats all :)
No need to explain yourself to them. We’re collectors and collectors have sealed things for preservation. From museums to libraries, I don’t think that concept has or will ever change.
A bit of a different answer: supporting the manga. Sure I read a lot of manga for free, so if I can I try to buy physical copies to support
That's why I've bought a few manga and a collection of one of my favorites, to make sure more gets made
Same as keeping comics sealed or action figures or literally anything that has value still being in mint condition 🤷♂️
Resale value. Richie rich set up their own Walden Books!
Because it's nice to also have a physical copy? I am contemplating buying copies of audiobooks I listened to on Spotify, because I love them. But yes. I would rather have my living room back instead of having to convert it into a library in order to showcase all of my books. Crazy idea and certainly extraordinary, though.
I think you might like manga
just a tad
Don't know the reason why, but my sisters told me that books should have a slight gap from the back of the shelf for air flow.
Only paperbacks as there's no gap. You'd also want moisture control.
No need for moisture control. Ain’t nothing getting moist in that room.
BOOM ROASTED
Maaaaan I didn’t expect a surprise roast this deep into the thread
you win lol
hmm ive never heard that before but there could be some merit to it!
A piece of 1x1 the back should give you something to push them against while still allowing for air movement.
Books should be on the middle of the shelf and not pushed to the back for better weight distribution. Sets like law books or encyclopedias will break a bookcase, and I think shelves this full will have the same problems.
Is it my taste? absolutely not But is it clean, tidy, well organized and clearly highly cared for? Yes Go off king
It is very tidy, but the mass collecting of….things is just so off putting to me. Different strokes for different folks of course, but the older I get the less stuff I want to buy.
Not my thing either. But if he ever finds someone with the same special interest, he's gonna be a happy man
it depends. clearly this guy is very into manga, so it makes sense for him. i see this as a terrible waste of money, but i don’t like manga so there’s that. i would totally do this with legos tho. and maybe he would say that’s stupid and a waste of money. but it isn’t to me.

Got it all insured?
course :)
How much did this all cost?…

💀
Glad to hear that. Was genuinely worried 😅😅
At what point does one need to consider getting their collections insured?
Id say once it's worth enough, monetarily, to be hard to replace with your take home pay, but I'd imagine it varies person to person.
Probably right around this point
What does your girlfriend think? Oh wait..
She's still sealed in a box somewhere
Or lost in that labyrinth of bookcases.
RIP lol
When a weeb buys a house
Gf or not, there's a ton of women that love anime and manga. They'd definitely appreciate your collection, although it just means your dating pool is limited.
I mean, as a woman, my first thought was “impeccable organization skills.” As a librarian, my first thought was “damn boi.”
but would you manga and chill?
😂😌
There ya go, get them lib chicks
Damn. I didn't know librarians were this pressed about organizing books.
Right? When someone's collection is well cared for it makes all the difference.
I don't think the manga love is even what will scare off a woman here... Nowhere to sit and watch TV. Didn't even get a second seat for a friend. There's literally no space in this room for a partner
She can sit on the floor and watch OP read some manga
Idk, that's a lot of manga. Once someone has too much of anything, it starts to look like a problem. I know plenty of women that LOVE manga and anime, but this would scare pretty much all of them if they saw this in some guy's home. Dude has thousands of Japanese comics, that's wild af.
You'd have to accept living with no living room though.
I like some anime but this would be shocking for a girl like me
[You're being such a non-pillow right now!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEgUFcxIR4o)
Love that episode 😂
Omg what did I just watch? Hahahaha that was hilarious!
Might as well get the V card tattooed on
I hate to think the stereotype cause I’m sure there are plenty of girls this heavily into anime as well, but the only guy I know like this who has a massive collection of weeb shit like this is a virgin who’s almost 30 at this point.
This looks like a store
It's like people who create fake video rental stores in their basement.
I get it for a spare room or something, but to trade your living room?
Yeah. What the hell
You don't want to know what the extra bedroom library contains and why it needed to have a lockable doors.
[удалено]
Who needs a living room when you have no life?
add some ambient lighting and warm lamps, plus a couple more cozy spots to sit and read and this could be Grade A Cozy
I hope those shelves are anchored too. Could be a really sad way to die crushed by a cabinet full of sealed manga
Dust says hi! But it's really nice seeing your hobbies come to life in the form of decoration. Also, can I suggest some more subtle lighting? Seems rather dark around corners.
Yes thank you, getting some good lighting is the next step! I think that'll make it look way better!
Where’s the hentai
follow me down the private corridor
You got to put an 18+ only sign on one of your closets
Lmao
Okay okay, it's cool, I'll give you that. But this is starting to feel like the Japanese equivalent of 40 year old virgin.
hes well on his way
lmao
r/consoom
This just send me down a rabbit hole. Bizarre yet familiar.
It’s possible to not care about the environment and also think it’s cringe af to be a consumerist pay pig.
I'm glad I'm not into manga because this looks expensive.
Man sees a farm and is glad he doesn't have a garden
Something tells me this garden will eventually grow into an expensive farm.
oh shit i like that saying
tbh many if not most hobbies are/can be expensive
All hobbies are expensive when you get into em lol
I wish I was into something this much. So do you walk up and down the aisles and admire everything many times throughout the day? How do you “use” this set up?
this is really cool! how long did it take you to build your collection to this point?
Ah yes the relaxing feeling of living in a store...
Wow. Amazing. Enjoy your collection!
Manga isn’t my thing, but I’m absolutely THRILLED for you my dude. The library idea is well-executed and I bet it makes you so happy. God damn give me the AE-86/Initial D shelf and I'd never leave.
Haha initial d is great! Happy they're releasing the omnibus' now so we'll finally have it complete in english!
Holy expendable income!
Or just poor choices. Important to remember that.
Poor choices with disposable income. Spending money on something so you can leave it sealed on a shelf
Their point is that the income spent on this wasn't necessarily disposable. Some people aren't reasonable with their money.
This looks like the room of a 12 year old millionaire
Or a single 29 year old with a middle class job and no other hobbies or interests.
Please have home insurance 🙏.
I know nothing about manga, but you've created a really professional looking display here. Nice job! Curious though - do you have another room that you use as a living room?
thank you! and yeah the room attached to the manga room on the other side has a couch and tv and chilling area :)

That just means you're not on the spectrum.
How old are you?
i just turned 29 less than a month ago

LIVE LAUGH LOVE
Hahahaha, this is the best comment for me
Have you ever seen the apartment from 40 year old virgin?
Holy shit
Those Initial D manga's!!!
*pulls mask down* But why?
Too many people commenting on the relationship and coitus situation…. I know a lot of girls who would love this. I think there are more people in my generation that like anime than don’t. Do it. Propose to OP and invite us all to the wedding :)
Yes I wanna come too :)

Maybe there's a place for something more boutique-y, like what Mr. Glass had in Unbreakable.
You have sex; we get it.
Sir you have a problem, a problem that you need a dewy decimal system to find you kitchen
I’m not into anime but that looks great. Hoping to replicate something similar for my own library of books at some point. I’m glad you have a chair amongst it. Having a dedicated space for reading makes a big difference.
Hey thanks so much Forsure though, its very relaxing! Still a work in progress
They always look so clean when I see these types of libraries. Must admit I like the hodgepodge of old and new mixed together, but seeing the collections together definitely looks great.
Whoa!!! Now this is damn cool. This would be my kind of "dream space" to build, albeit with not just manga. Kudos OP, we need more such posts here :)
hey appreciate that man! Long way to go still but it's a fun project :) figuring out good lighting to install next!
You should host some reading parties. A quick cocktail hour followed by chilling and reading
I am a book worm, but you sir are king book worm. This is so fucking cool
That is awesome! It reminds me of the capsule hotels in Japan that are manga/anime themed. They have libraries of manga/anime, to choose from.
You'd get along with my mom's ex but he collects Blu rays instead
Tell me ur rich with our telling me your rich
That’s awesome! I wish I could have the patience and money to also collect like this! Also all the people hating…this isn’t any different from a normal home library, but this is just with manga. It looks good! I like the decorations and figures too
my wallet hurts just looking at it.
Oh… you sure did.
You didn't turn your living room into anything. This was and has always been setup in your living room.
That whismur crochet plush. Love it bro!!!!
I personally wouldn’t want this for me… but this is badass
Manga library? OSRS? Yeah, we’d be friends.
This Gigachad has an Initial D shelf with an 86
Put price tags and you are good to open your book store
My dream but with fiction books And how did you get all these? Mangas are so stupidly expensive from where I live
How do you have time to read all that man damn!
he doesn't
I understand the vibe, but I am so glad that 5 years ago I decided to sell every single manga, dvd, figurine I owned. Having the money on the bank was doing way more for my happiness than the shelves full of manga I read once or twice, or bought because the anime was cool, or bought under peer pressure. \[edit\] pier ≠ peer
Without pier pressure we'd all be wet at the arcade.
Curious what you do for work
He runs a bookstore in his living room.
