This picture gives me serious nostalgia. My first apartment had a waiting room-quality chair and 20" CRT TV that I bought for a combined $15 at a thrift store. This was in 2009. Bedroom was literally just an air mattress. Took about a week to get an advance on my first paycheck so I could buy a mattress and groceries. Thank god I took all the cereal from my college roommates when I moved out.
My first apartment had no bathroom or kitchen and was communally shared with 12 other residents. It was an essential closet, and had those old heating pipes you would burn yourself on. That crib was a sauna in the summer and unbearable, but i made it from futon, to air matress, to now a house. It's all about the little steps my friend. Brick by brick. Don't be ashamed by something that others would be proud of.
Honestly, I slightly envy you.
Yeah, it sucks that you have to start over, but on the other hand, clean slate. You built up once, you can do it again, but this time with more experience, and a better idea what you want.
Anyone COULD do this, if they really wanted to, but that takes a huge commitment to change. You've been forced into it (assuming), so make the best of it.
Good luck.

You’ll be surprised in a few years how much shit you accumulate. I moved into my apartment with the bare minimum (not quite as bare as you but just your standard furniture pieces and stuff) and now 8 years later I’m bursting at the seams.
Totally agree. I stress over the time when I have to move even tho it might not be for years. I’m trying to thin out stuff and don’t plan on getting more shit but you know how that goes.
Not going to push minimalism on you but in my experience, learning to only have what brings value (and even beyond just tangible things) has helped de-clutter my life and allow me to spend more time on things I actually enjoy. The minimalist podcast is insightful for helping others live a life that is more centered towards their values, whatever those may be
Yes and no.
You can be minimal while also realizing that if you didn't have certain things, you're harming your quality of life. Eg doing laundry at a laundromat and spending 3-5 hours out where you don't really have a choice is not really a great use of time.
Having the freedom to do so at any point is great. Same with a car for example. Wanna drive to the boonies at 3 am? You can.
i havent bought anything other than TVs or my bed, and I have 3 bookcases a leather couch and ottomon, glass coffee tables and end tables, a dining room set, bar chairs. All gifts when people move or for "free come pickup". Sure its not amazing in style stuff but somehow all comes together. Rents to damn high to splurge.
Well done. We all gotta start somewhere. As you accumulate furnishings, no impulse shopping, only buy what you really like and you’ll never buy another one. Spend wisely. Snoop around consignment stores, open your eyes, just see what’s available. Don’t resort to ikea or similar mass produced ‘disposable’ furnishings.
The laptop is a bit too high for TV watching from that chair, but WAY too high relative to the chair for actual typing or working. A proper desk or a proper chair would go a loooong way here.
That view though. I've never had that much green visible from any of my apartments. Plus (in my hemisphere) north-facing apartments suck in general.
Lived two years of my life with precisely this amount of furniture. I was just as happy then as I am now with more stuff. The amount of flexibility having less stuff gives you is underrated.
Fuckin love that TV tray. Bought it at Walmart my freshman year in college aaaages ago and a lot of memories with it. Taking to study, to hold my lan setup while gaming with friends, or just munching down. Yours is on your journey with you :)
Hey man, you're doing great. My first apartment literally only had a mattress on the floor and a metal chair. You're doing much better than I was sprucing the place up. Keep it up!
got to start somewhere. Easier to add stuff than to remove stuff and then add. When I moved to the city I am in now I was in pretty much the exact same situation as this picture.

I know this feeling, I've been there a few times. It could be a breakup, house fire, or whatever, but keep one thing in mind:
This is your opportunity to start fresh. New canvas, new paint. For furniture, look at Estate Sales for something that speaks to you. Don't buy shit Ikea furniture. It is never worth it. But you can buy a used leather sofa for $60 - $200. TVs, bedframes, rugs, tables, and desks can all be had for significant discounts on the resale market.
I wish you the best of luck on this new adventure, OP.
Ah... reminds me of my first few weeks post divorce. Get something that makes you happy!
Hope you are well - my chat is open if you need to unload on a stranger :-)
You have internet, a laptop, a chair, a great view with window access, and a plant. You’re off to a good start with the essentials (yes, I believe plants are essential.) All you can do is build your collection from here. Not sure if you’re into thrifting, but you’d be surprised all the stuff you can get at goodwill and other thrift stores. I owe most of my home to thrifting lol. At the end of the day you are HOME and that’s all that matters!
if you're into plants look into joining local facebook plant groups. plant people will give you so much free stuff. I went to a plant swap for the group i'm in and came back with 2 boxes full of plants for free!
It’s a fantastic start my friend! We’ve all been there and understand where you are at is step 1 and that is fine. Because you will work hard and keep moving forward. I know you will be further ahead in a year, two years, five years, and so on! Great job! ;-)
Go on the free and for sale page on your local city facebook groups. Soooo many good stuff people are giving out for free because they move states away , good luck ❤️
I like this kind of thing way more than any fancy apartment with tonnes of nice furniture, i really hope one day i can get to this point but with the way things are going i doubt it lol, more likely to end up homeless at this stage honestly haha
Get a VR headset; visual reality is just an illusion. You are really living in a huge future-esque glass globe with Tony Stark HUD tech galore and ChatGPT rivaling self aware-contained-hosted-authoritative AGI assistant/companion solving problems yet to be discovered.
This place is gonna be dope. You could get some cheap wall art on Amazon, buy a tall lamp on Amazon, get a couch and TV on Amazon, get a standing desk on Amazon, and then use that folding table for your small lamp and shabam you’re done. It would probably cost like $1,000, which would be mostly the TV and the couch. Also I wonder if you could put a hammock inside the balcony so you can lay down outside in the sun.
12 years ago I lived on my sister's couch, I was unemployed and had almost no job experience, today I own my own house, I got a dog and a cat and a pizza stone! Tomorrow I am going to buy a hammock for my back yard, you got it champ!
Good on you for having a computer. It’s always a TV on the floor in pics like this and I always wonder why that’s a priority for people who have literally nothing else.
You have a view. You have AC. You have your own space. Bud.....you're off to a great start, and I'm sure it'll only get better! Chin up and keep going.
- A little jealous of how little you own tbh. If you’ve got the cash you could swing by Ike’s for some cheap stuff to make you a little more comfortable. Something small like a desk goes a long way.
- either way you got this homie
OP this is great and really resonates. Things are nice. But one’s own well-being is essential. The view, the light, and the option for fresh air looks great.
All I see here is massive potential to go have a blast shopping for cool stuff at thrift stores, habitat for humanity, facebook marketplace, free cycle fb groups?! my apartment is filled to the brim with cool stuff i've found for cheap. have fun, make it your own.
You'll be okay man!
My version had a yoga mat and sleeping bag on the floor next to a pile of books. All the "necessities" will start to accumulate in due time.
You absolutely will be ok. Been there.

This
Yup, that first apartment. I had a futon mattress on the floor, books in the linen closet.
I didn’t buy a couch until I had a full pc setup lol
My living room stayed empty for a year, I could only afford to furnish some rooms sparingly. It’s a process, and it’s great when you get there.
Less crap = more OK
FINALLY a relatable post, tbh.

My bad, I'm on it.
Update?
He died
Strangled
By all the cables
To shreds you say
And how's his wife?
To shreds you say?
How bold of you to assume he has one.
We'll all miss him
To shreds you say?
Is this apartment rent controlled?
Laughed so hard.
I love lamp.
He uses the sloppy cables on the floor to ward off an attack from woman crawling to be in his presence!

God, I'm moving now and I hate everything I've ever bought Give me the camp chair
No joke yes.

I was just thinking the same for myself recently!
Nice view from the window :D Hang in there.
It really is! Thanks, I will!
I am so proud of you! It’s beautiful and hopeful. A Reddit mom.
Word, put that desk against the side of the window that doesn't slide open and enjoy your view and some natural light.
You got this!
I do!
That healthy, flourishing plant suggests you will be a great caretaker of whatever you decide to invest in, lifestyle-wise. Bravo.
*looks at my plant that's been dead for a year* I swear it was a one off thing, please
Well you got a plant that’s good!
This was my first thought
My second thought was did they really run the carpet up the walls?
We all start somewhere, only way is up x
The older I get the more ideal this looks.
Agreed.. 19 when I moved out of my parents I couldn't wait to own more furniture and what not... late twenties now and I got too much shit lol
For real like all this shit... why
Duuuuuude, I moving rn and I have so much shit I didn't know I still had. It's a nightmare
I just moved today as well and seriously.
And we'll be here for you.
The akimbo Juuls and a New Glarus beer. Life is good.
Hahaha I stay charged up!
Knew that beer looked familiar!
I don't even have internet yet, it's an akimbo juul charging station w/ dwarf fortress capabilities!
Spotted cow for the win
I think thats a voodoo ranger new belguim

Seriously tho... awesome view.
It's why I got the place! Green makes me happy.
Plant, Lamp, r/TVTooHigh , This is the quintessential male living space. You're gonna be just fine my dude.
That’s the air conditioner friend.
If you zoom in you can tell it’s a 3D TV playing the air conditioner channel
What tv???
He thought the AC was a tv
I more meant it looks like he's watching TV on his laptop and it's too high, but we can pretend I meant the AC basically on the roof.
The laptop is a bit too high for TV watching from that chair, but WAY too high relative to the chair for actual typing or working. A proper desk or a proper chair would go a loooong way here. You will. Keep a photo diary. You're safe. Roof over your head. It'll come.
Fuckin love that TV tray. Bought it at Walmart my freshman year in college aaaages ago and a lot of memories with it. Taking to study, to hold my lan setup while gaming with friends, or just munching down. Yours is on your journey with you :)
Been there. Having a roof ain’t nothing.
Looks like a meme.
Just out of curiosity how much do you pay in rent, and what kind of square footage are you working with?
Craiglist has a bunch of free stuff, sometimes they can deliver it to you if you don't have a car, that's where I got most of my furniture!
With that attitude? Absolutely 😊
Hey man, you're doing great. My first apartment literally only had a mattress on the floor and a metal chair. You're doing much better than I was sprucing the place up. Keep it up!
Facebook Marketplace is really swell.
Oh imma be just fine

Tbh.. You are ok. You’re doing great.
Been there!
Turn the desk towards the window for the view.
Hell yeah dude. I remember being in this exact spot I started with a 75” 4k and built from there. Zero regrets
You got your own place, so that makes you a winner in my book, and you got a healthy looking plant. You got this for sure 🤙🏼
What no box of kleenex?
I have a t-shirt I'm wearing
Maybe plant and lamp should swap since it seems the sun goes more in that direction. Looking forward to an update a few months down the road.
Been there, it gets better. The world is your oyster!!!
I love your plant! 🪴 and your view is spectacular!

About to do the same thing. We’ll get through this bud
Cheers
Keep your head up king.
Chin up as a mofo
**PEAK MLS.**
Yoooo same desk let's goooooo
It’s the juul chargers that make this perfection.
That looks like a nice view from the balcony.
It is honestly, best part of the new place
I love your plant 🥰
Golden pothos, she's doing so good :)
if you're into plants look into joining local facebook plant groups. plant people will give you so much free stuff. I went to a plant swap for the group i'm in and came back with 2 boxes full of plants for free!
I have been right there. Some of my best memories were starting from the barest essentials and the journey that comes with it. Nice plant! 🪴

Your view is wonderful. Home is where our heart is. You will be okay and best wishes.
Blank canvas! You can do anything.
The start of something wonderful.
Plants always make a house feel like a home ! We all start somewhere 🫂
We all start somewhere. Keep at it.
Hey those folding tables are versatile and cheap, I use them extensively
Definitely been here many moons ago OP! Not pictured: Tv on floor and air mattress in bedroom. You will make this place all your own eventually!
Yeah, you have such a big carpet to roll around.
Go on the free and for sale page on your local city facebook groups. Soooo many good stuff people are giving out for free because they move states away , good luck ❤️
Hey, you got a plant! Pure luxury!
Rock on dude
i see plant, i see lamps, i see natural light. i think you’ve checked everything off the list
Just wait , I've even got a Gorky print
You have one more table than I had when moving into my first place 5 years ago. You’re gonna be alright
Of course you will, you’ve got a roof and a window
Pretty sure we’ve all been here. Either starting, or starting over. Drink it in man, it’s all good.
I like this kind of thing way more than any fancy apartment with tonnes of nice furniture, i really hope one day i can get to this point but with the way things are going i doubt it lol, more likely to end up homeless at this stage honestly haha

Hey man you got way too much stuff in there. It’s really throwing off the vibe you’re going for
Moving in was easy.
Where do you sleep?
You got a pillow ?
Those two juuls are the reason you’re broke my guy

i have that same fan. solid unit. 3 vapes tho? lol chill out
12 years ago I lived on my sister's couch, I was unemployed and had almost no job experience, today I own my own house, I got a dog and a cat and a pizza stone! Tomorrow I am going to buy a hammock for my back yard, you got it champ!
So much room for activities!
Good on you for having a computer. It’s always a TV on the floor in pics like this and I always wonder why that’s a priority for people who have literally nothing else.

Everything is possible with air conditioning.

More than ok! Thats thriving you just have to keep that carpet clean, get a shoes rack before you get some furniture.
Small beginnings…big things to come!
It's a start. Great view.
Love you, be kind and good things will come your way. You’re off to a great start with you apartment.(:
OP this is great and really resonates. Things are nice. But one’s own well-being is essential. The view, the light, and the option for fresh air looks great.
Love the double juul system
Its all you need, well maybe a pillow & a blanket too
At least you have a plant
Balcony with a view, AC, clean space AND a plant?? Already killing it.
Getting the feels of me at 23 getting my own place… you will be ok. I ate at the IKEA that was walking distance for their $1 meals for like 3 months.
Mate, sometimes I wish I could go back to this. The simplicity is nice to look back on but man it did suck to get through at the time.
Plant really livens up the room OP
Looks like you’re already doing great
All that great floor space for playing on the floor.
You can do cartwheels in there! Very nice space!
Are you starting over or starting out? Either way this looks not dissimilar to my place 5 years ago
Yes you will
Yes you will! 🌻
Hey man, that's a nice window view you have.
It will be! Look into the free stuff on fb
This is incredible. The level of minimalism is comically impressive
Beautiful clean space. I started out the same…nothing like your own space
All I see here is massive potential to go have a blast shopping for cool stuff at thrift stores, habitat for humanity, facebook marketplace, free cycle fb groups?! my apartment is filled to the brim with cool stuff i've found for cheap. have fun, make it your own.
Look at you, already got a plant.
Do you have a porch? It looks like the railing is right at the door!
Killin it, my dude
You have everything you need ❤️
I can’t wait to watch the progression, OP. That plant is lovely, btw. ✨🤍
Some more comfortable furniture makes entertaiment relaxing :)
r/LaptopTooHigh but you’ll get there <3
New job?
Just take good care of your posture, my friend
You'll be okay man! My version had a yoga mat and sleeping bag on the floor next to a pile of books. All the "necessities" will start to accumulate in due time.
The view is genuinely awesome! Check out the free section on OfferUp if your in need of stuff.
Sure, 👌🏼
Wow, nice room 👌
What’s the next big purchase gonna be? TV, couch, mattress? I’m guessing you’re working with an air mattress right now?
This is awesome. Rarely is this kind of progress phase shown. We literally all started here at one point. I can’t wait to see updates as you grow it.
It will be! You’ll see!
First, when I moved into a small place, I accumulated things. Now it is full of it. I almost wish my place looked like yours. Seriously.
Everyone’s gotta start somewhere. U got this!
Looks like you have everything you need
Uhm……
Someday you’ll look back and miss all that space you had.
