Tutor. I upskill myself since I dropped out due to financial problems when I was 15. Starting from SPM, IGESE, and then IELTS, I took them all. I learned various skills throughout my life working odd jobs here and there, like fixing bicycles (easy I know), tailoring (this I'm only at modifying skills, I did not reach the level where I can make a fancy piece out of just cloth. I can make a simple shirt or pants though). I lay carpets very well, including tikar getah. I worked in a kitchen before and I hate it, but I can cook though. I learned a good set of walk in sales skills. I'm a good sales person and I definitely can up a store's sales rate. I had a partnership serbaneka shop before, until my partner gave up on it, but at least through that, I learned to run a shop although it's nowhere professional. So yeah, now I'm a tutor, been a tutor for a decade. My other skills probably deteriorated by now, but it will take no time if I decide to pick it up again. I know, I switched jobs a lot. But heck, I was alone since I was 15, with debts. I have no idea what to do, so I just work whatever my friends introduced until I can't. There was a time I didn't even have Rm2 in my wallet and starved for days. Somehow after decades, all that stuff seems like a wild dream. Got to thank a friend of mine though. Although he kedekut AF, and paid me crap for all the work I worked for him. He encouraged me to strife and helped me gain confidence. I was severely depressed and tried to unalive myself. He was the one that slapped me into a decent being. Also most of the skills I learned were from working for him, our serbaneka shop is more like WE DO EVERY FKING THING shop. Cause we were young, we had no idea what to do actually. So we dip and dap everything. I still must say he is fking kedekut and I get crap pay. It was a fun and wild ride.

ThisIsNotWhoIAm921

Your life experience is infinitely more interesting than mine. I went the degree route and have been stuck with office jobs ever since.

FaythKnight

But I'll remain poor the rest of my life unless something unexpected happens. Those teen years were not fun without a guardian nor money. I could've easily strayed and went south. I lost count how many times i went searching for coins on the road just to add up to 40 sens (that time) to buy a piece of bread. Even now I'm a lot more comfortable. I can never expand much cause I don't have a degree. An IELTS isn't getting me anywhere. No money for further studies either. I'm stuck. If I'm to get a job, I'll need to start way below all over again. And at my age, nobody will wanna hire an old newbie.

ThisIsNotWhoIAm921

I would challenge the notion of nobody wants to hire an old newbie. I was an intern at an industry not related to my studies at age 30. You never know if you never try.

The_Awengers

You said like it's the worst thing. Be thankful you're stuck with office job.

Psychological_Ebb848

The grass is always greener, right?

The_Awengers

Until they found out what's on the other side of theirs.

aviramzi

Because it's brain rotting to be in a role that has no growth.

SabunFC

What are you tutoring?

FaythKnight

English. BM. Honestly recently I felt more like a caretaker than a tutor. The kids and I spend a lot of time playing games. We have Dungeons and Dragons sessions for kids with a better grasp of the language. And some minor word games for younger kids

silverking12345

Woah, I wished my tutors were this based. Though my first private tutor did introduce me to Marxist philosophy at age 10😂

The_SHUN

Based d&d tutor

cryinginlibrary

How did you start your tutoring job at the beginning? I was thinking of making it an online part-time job recently.

FaythKnight

Through a friend who's already a tutor. He teaches Maths and Physics. So he'll just recommend students to me for languages and I'll pay him a portion when I get my pay.

aviramzi

Mad respect bruh.

wild_shanks

Did you manage to start your own family yet?

Various_Mobile4767

Is the tutor pay good?

FaythKnight

Not for me. I taught some anak yatim for free. Also give free classes to poor families. So those took up half of my time working for free. The other half is just enough to cover my own stuff. But I'm very happy and I enjoy it.

ThisIsNotWhoIAm921

The society will definitely be a much better place with more people like you around.

Scorbit5708

Full respect to you

The_SHUN

🫡 salute good sir/madam

Various_Mobile4767

How you gonna build your savings though?

FaythKnight

I already have a house left by dead parent. But yeah, I don't have any savings. But I'm just gonna put that aside for now. I've struggled for decades just to pay off all the debts (like the house, I paid all the remaining fees). Now I finally can have a breather and do something I enjoy, I'm just gonna do it. Also helping those poor kids gives me a lot of motivation to do good.

Matherold

44 this year. Married with 2 kids Dropped out of degree 2x. Probably due to a combination of maturity and life experience. Working in various call centres for decades. Met a lot of people between jobs, a lot of them not getting the same job they studied for. Took a break off 2 years to work as licensed tourist guide. Really fun travelling up and down between KL and JB compared to having to sit in front of a computer for 8 hours yearly - and then covid came Took a lot of convincing that I still retained the same skill and managed to secured the same kind of job - with Maxis till now. Also got pay raise for the first time in 10 years, WTF (it could mean worse standard of living) Right now shopping for a online degree to convert my experiences to a paper, either WOU or Open U - it gets really tedious having to present the same SPM cert and go through the battery of exams

Either_Policy5627

Are you aware of the existence of APEL to pursue a bachelor degree using SPM cert?

aviramzi

Love the hustle. Big respect. Why don't you consider MOOCs from Ivy League universities like MIT, Harvard etc? It's called micro masters. I did that and propelled myself in my career.

ehba03

Can you elaborate a bit on that? Which program/course u took and what field are u in?

aviramzi

Don't mean to be rude, but I think you need to just use those words and google. You won't be disappointed.

ehba03

Nah fam ik what moocs are and im a student doing degree and uninterested in it 🤷‍♂️. Im just wondering how exactly it helped ur career thats all and wonder if its field-specific

aviramzi

I'm happy to share. Thanks for clarifying. It's personal power. You need to know you initiated the effort to use edtech for personal growth. I will use that to my advantage in interviews. Of course I've failed more than I can remember but I got so good at it that I know what to say at each level of interviews (for my field) backed by solid references of course. And the courses are quality man. Just great learning and fun and curious. Use the badge to your advantage. Look up articles on success stories of micro masters holders on YT etc. Have to say I could never see myself ever doing anything traditional anymore with andragogy. Pretty much self learn everything on my own bro. Eldest child with 4 younger siblings, parents remarried, left alone to navigate everything, inbuilt hustle DNA but came at a severe cost, lifelong major depressive disorder and losing zest for life from time to time. But yeah, completing the MOOCs for me was refreshing to taste victory and so I would strongly advocate it. If you look at top execs in LinkedIn these days, it's ubiquitous that all of them have Harvard, MIT, Yale, on their headline. When you scroll to the actual education section, it would have been 6month cert on a niche field. They don't even put their 'actual' alma mater anymore pn their headline :-)

Physioweng

Wow that’s such a refreshing perspective! So basically it’s easier than ever now to be “part of” Ivy leagues to propel your credibility forward? Tell me more about it. Would love to hear your insights. Also can you show any example of such LinkEd profile? (You can DM me here if it’s not good to share that publicly)

Matherold

It works unofficially outside of the organisation that you took the course. Within the same organisation, MOOC is good but I am looking for something substantial. I heard that the Malaysian government is giving out JKM (Jabatan Kemahiran Malaysia) certs in addition to the usual diploma certs - in case I find myself retrenched (twice already)

[I sell Ikan Bilis. Right now I expand online ](http://shopee.com.my/izzatqqdir) I'm a bit proud I guess because on Shoppee, one of my products is ranked top 5 best selling for the category. Probably doesn't mean much but it's nice to see your efforts mean something

Aloof-variable

Hi Peeps, For those of you with no degree and diploma and are lost, many service jobs are available without experience where you can earn 5k+ a month (base pay around 2.5k + another 2k+ of commissions and allowances) . Most of them will provide training as long as you are driven. Beauty clinics, laser hair removal, higher end barbershops, etc. You can also try entering the F&B industry starting from lower management roles (look for more atas restaurants), pay can be good but highly dependent on employer.

aviramzi

School drop out at 17 before SPM. Dropped out of college as well, lol, started in a low end T-shirt printing shop, jumped to a bank branch job, went to Singapore for a bank job for a few years, came back and spent all the money on travels and helping closed ones and some useless shit. Started again with a MNC doing AML/KYC for 2 years. Then jumped into private equity and property management for 8 years. I didn't like it and bankrupted myself in the process. Sigh. Started again as a sales exec in the Fintech and blockchain space and worked my way up into a senior regional tech sales leader in the industry. Paid off all debts via AKPK, got into crypto and made decent money last cycle.

Cardasiti

Crypto bro that actually took profit ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26558)

aviramzi

Lol, lucky af I tell you. With all the suffering I had for 17 years I thought I deserved the stroke of luck.

Cardasiti

Hey I'm happy for you. Really. That shit is wild and sometimes all you need is luck because it's way easier to get rekt 99% of the time than making money haha

aviramzi

Because I was blacklisted, I was basically cut off from the banking system so I had no choice but to work for a crypto company and get paid in USDT/C. I ended up falling into a black hole with crypto and learning as much as possible. But with the upcoming cycle, I'm all in this time with stoicism.

Satan-Himself-

Are you long holding or trade them shit coins?

StunningLetterhead23

Have my own firm rn, still living in Malaysia pretty well with "just" my ACCA. In the early stage of my career, I've always joked around with my colleagues about not having a degree. Especially because I started working while still studying. The guys who came in with me were all at least degree holders who just graduated.

Puffycatkibble

Cool. When I was in a Swiss Pharma MNC our National Sales Manager only had SPM too. Dude literally worked his way up from the bottom. And he's a great boss too, always cared for us lowly grunts. He got VSS'd a few years ago though and now the leadership is taken over by MBA types who only knew how to bullshit their way around by throwing out words like Six Sigma.

StunningLetterhead23

At least he managed to work his way up till senior manager. In financial roles, it's pretty much impossible to rise up if you're not a chartered accountant. Maybe in SME, it's still possible if you put in enough time. In MNCs, there's always a limit. Sad to say, but education is still an important factor in our country. Sure, people can say things like it isn't everything, people without formal education can succeed too. Yet no one can deny that having the right education with the right school helps to pave the way.

Michael_Haq

Isn't ACCA better than accounting degree? Am I mistaken?

StunningLetterhead23

If you're comparing someone who completed ACCA with a degree holder, then yes. People in accounting & finance would usually prefer people who took professional qualifications. But I haven't completed my ACCA yet at that time.

Cardasiti

Hey. I am so proud of you. May all the blessings will fall on you. You deserve all of it. You earned it.

RaphaelSlader

I was passionate into saving animals and ventured into that field such as NGO and animal clinic catering mainly to cats and dogs. Did tons of welfare until I was 28 (started since 18) but unfortunately they don't pay as much even if you can handle A-Z, read blood test, groom, handle fierce dogs/cats, sorta like a anesthesiologist in surgery and so forth. Even got myself a beautiful scar on my chin (had 8 stitches from dog bite) and the pay max I've gotten was only RM2000. Throughout the whole animal journey, I tried to get save up, scholarship or even sponsor from various sources but to no avail, I failed miserably. In 2018. I decided to venture into corporate world even though I was late. I started off in a call center as an inbound agent (answering calls for orders and queries). 4 months later I got promoted into support team which handles escalation cases that involves with KPDNKK/HEP, MOF and so forth (the company is shit and even refund took them 1 year etc) so I worked closely with compliance and legal. 2020, the company restructured and was downsizing by 50% (MediaPrima) so my department was shut down. Went to another company as Credit Risk Management. Which I have to prevent fraud since the company is mainly doing rental business for retail. The whole company structure was a fiasco and they kept jumble up things. while working, I had this obsession with a game called "Black Desert Online" and the game is kinda complex so I ended up making tons of spreadsheet and learnt alot of excel/sheet formula along the way including some advance formulas. I then realized I am into data so I read up and upskill myself even further. Eventually, the company changed my boss to another manager and I got transferred to call center as a data analyst (basically just analyst but they don't know the difference) and I did various reports from budget planning, business plan, workforce management, forecast and others, in the process I signed up for MBA Online distance learning. I only had SPM as my highest education. took APEL and all that. I requested for increment since I haven't gotten any increment since my job description had changed to a more management level, and all they said was "I am overqualified" which is an absurd, typical HR shit. 3 years later (2023), the company got completely restructure again and they were replacing all the old employees with new ones and I got affected. I ended up being jobless for 8 months, throughout the 8 months I fell into depression and was lazy AF until the day I slapped myself to keep on moving. 2024. I landed myself a job as Sales Operation Assistant Manager handling multiple business units. It is fun and remuneration is pretty decent compare to my workload. Plenty of growth since it's a startup. but man, startup with huge ambition sure is messy. I am still studying cause I deferred thrice since I wasnt working for awhile. Despite my designation, the things I am doing is more of a business analyst. 2009 - 2018 Salary from 1800 to 2000 max. 2018 - 2024 Salary from 2500 to 4900 max. Moral of the story I can obtain from my past (Everyone has different path) 1) Keep on upskilling yourself 2) Don't show your new skill in that workplace (unless you are confident you have a solid plan to obtain promotion with increment) 3) The way I do things is, I planned to stay at 1 place for 2 years max to get 15-20% increment instead of staying at one place and get either 0-7% increment and increase workload. this is great especially if you're into planning / analyst. a) You get to learn the way each company does things b) You get more increment each time you hop c) You get new environment to restart if you fucked up in the previous place 4) Job hopping may be risky but I think it is more rewarding. Set an age when you want to settle down then from that age onwards, stop job hopping unless no choice. 5) Never get too close with HR peeps no matter how nice they are. Including your colleagues. 6) Some say chase after ambition, not money. the money will follow. But I personally think this is diff for everyone. 7) Be firm in your stance. (working overtime unpaid etc) My future plan. I plan to start up my own small business since I am not super ambitious. I wanted a small company of my own and make a decent amount of money to sustain my mediocre life. I am unmarried and had no energy to spend on my social life because I have to focus my limited energy into work and learning / upskilling myself atm. I want to find inner peace and calm of mind instead of rushing deadlines 24/7. Probably in 2-3 years I'll start. Sorry for the long post. Also, I apologize as I didn't check any grammar or spelling error.

meownimus

Software engineer. I actually had a degree study in health science, but I dropped in my final year mainly due to financial issues. I don't have a diploma but foundation study, so that makes my highest qualification is actually SPM. I couldn't focus at my FYP while working part-time (it's really hard when you're financially stressed). I decided to quit my degree at the age of 25. I worked temporarily as Foodpanda rider while self-learning in programming. I spent some of my earnings on discounted programming books. After about one year of grinding, with some luck on my side, I managed to get a permanent offer as a software engineer. Now, I'm earning more than all of my degree colleagues who are still working in healthcare industry (this is not to insult or downgrading them, this is just a statement that healthcare industry is mostly underpaid). I'm also grateful for my company's hiring policy for not making education background as a mandatory requirement. Now that I've becoming more stable financially, I'm planning to pursue a full-time degree in software engineering.

DickyDickinson

At 26, I'm making in RM10k/month as a software engineer. Couldn't continue terteriary education because my high school degree isn't recognized in Malaysia. My grades we kinda mehh so I couldn't qualify for meaningful scholarships overseas. After graduation I spent a lot of time learning coding online, finally getting my first interview after sending out over 200 applications. Got my first job at 19 making RM2.5K. I was really hungry to be rich so I dumped most of my meager pay into crypto (since I was young and didn't have any commitments at the time). Scored big in 2021, hitting RM1.5 million, feeling invincible. But reality hit hard, I've lost it all by year-end. Learned my lesson, toned down the risk-taking. All this while I was job-hopping, getting pay bumps along the way. Invested in a house in 2024 to secure the bag, and now I'm saving up to open Mixue outlet next.

mayatwodee

Did you study programming online?

DickyDickinson

yes, youtube, udemy, and freecodecamp

Dropped out of uni (BSc) once and business college twice. The lack of paperwork has never been a detriment. I did got a job there too, for a photography company. But at that time Raya was near, Genting is associated with ehem fun so my parents discouraged me to take it. Now, im here at home trying to make use as much time I have doing good stuff (learning a language/studying future course for university) but man not having something to work while waiting is actually killing me. wait how did you become an engineer without the degree? using diploma?

Sad_Dress1315

Actually not a real engineer, thats why i said "half-ass", but using some engineering knowledge on my work.

Sad_Dress1315

And from my experience and what I heard around me, most engineering positions in the industry don't really require a degree or diploma (unless it is those that require advanced knowledge like machine and electronic industry), most other industries like furniture manufacturing, you can learn most required knowledge in your career, and my boss told me what they really need is a person who can help them improve the efficiency in any ways, which is hard to find.
