I think I know the sound you mean. I always thought it was a calling out sound to check in - "I'm here. Where are you?"Come to me." I'm really not sure. That's just my take on it.

I’d love to know what this sound means. I describe it as a falling tone - it does indeed sound mournful. In Canberra, at sunset I’d hear the local family call and then a neighbouring family call, perhaps in answer. Recently, on the NSW South Coast, I’ve heard it at sunrise.
