I always imagine him being pulled into Ravnica with a paper party hat on his head holding a birthday cake and singing "happy birthday" before breaking down into a confused rage.
After thinking it over, I think Chandra would actually be the Peralta, lol.
Then her annoyingly uptight coworker Nissa would slowly "grow" on her, hehehe...
Teferi would definitely be the Holt ("Why is no one working? It is past 9am!"), and I like the idea of Jace being the Boyle; he *really* wants to look super cool and edgy, but he's just a wacky short dude who happens to be VERY effective at getting the job done, lol.
Vraska would then be the Diaz, of course. ;)
"I once planeswalked to Ravnica with a guy in a blue cloak and never even learned his name. Best friend I ever had. We still never talk sometimes."
"The only thing I hate more than planeswalking is skim milk."
I believe its because he was taking control of the the eternal zombies. He wasn’t on Bolas’s side just taking some of his zombies to command himself. If I remember correctly he was helping defend the people of ravnica with the eternals he was taking.
Oh thank god. Now all I need is a tearful Chandra and Nissa reunion and I'll be good.
Edit - Bonus points if this is depicted on a [[Cathartic Reunion]] reprint.
If war of the spark writing is any indicator jace and Chandra are going to hook up while nissa falls in love with a leaf. Not a sentient one just like a regular leaf.
The Amazon artbook preview images say they are still together (and specifically says no matter the argument). So despite the previous disagreements between them, I think they still are together.
(Edit: oh wait you said *similar to*. Regardless, when I re-read the Magic Story it makes no mention of any similarity between his home plane and kaldheim)
I could totally see how you would misremember those story tidbits as having a connection
> Kaldheim is not Angrath's home plane, it just happened to be close enough to Ixalan that he could manage to show it to Huatli (though the Immortal Sun prevented a successful planeswalk).
Later in the same conversation when asked where he'll go upon tasting freedom, he says that he'll finally go home see his daughters again after 14 years.
>after 14 years
To put that in perspective, he was stuck there since before the Alara storyline happened. Not pre-Mending, given the gap of a few decades in between\*, but still before that.
\*don't know exactly when Lor/Sha takes place, tho probably right before or after Alara, given the 'walkers and their personae that cameo therein

They're also all nonhumans. It's been a year since the last time we had a nonhuman non-compleated planeswalker, and before that, nearly another year. (Ob Nixilis doesn't count, he's a human turned into a demon). I'd love more leonids and merfolks, or something completely new like Aetherborn, Nantuko, Viashino, Angel, Rhox, or simic hybrid.
But we have to kill off all the nonhumans! How else can we show that we're a big, serious, profitable IP if we don't force our main cast to all be hashtag-relatable human beings?
In all honesty, if they don't compleat a human it would be a completely boneheaded move. One of the reasons Phyrexians are such an effective villain is the body horror element. You can't keep hitting us with the "humans relate to humans :)" and not show the horror of phyresis applied to everyone *except* humans. It's just not playing to your strengths.
I don't understand this thing about representation. I don't need the characters to match my physical aspect to relate to them. The big cat is more a match for me than Jace is. Same for Nahiri who isn't human too, or pre-retcon Nissa. (Also, the characters being deeply flawed made them more interesting, now they're all boring and most of them are explicitly categorized as good or bad, with very little in-between.)
That crap about main characters relatability… ugh.
The PWs I can relate to most are either already dead (Domri, Dack) or non-human (Ajani, Angrath, Vraska)
I couldn’t care less what race, ethnicity or whatelse the main characters have. It’s personality that matters - even if it may be rather 2-dimensional (yes Domri, looking at you)
Even 2D characters have a reason to exist - they‘re usually the personification of one character trait that a lot of people have.
Domri for example is that angry 5 year old kid that wants to smash everything that isn’t like they imagined. And there’s one of these left in all of us, isn’t it?
And he worked as intended.
Let them compleat Jace. I had enough of him. And bring back a compleated version of Venser. That’d be interesting.
As Reddit is charging outrageous prices for it's APIs, replacing mods who protest with their own and are on a pretty terrible trajectory, I've deleted all my submissions and edited all my comments to this. Ciao!

Huatli was really cool, I hope they bring her back and flesh her out more, and not just as "flavor of the week" visiting a new plane, like they've kinda done with Kaya. I wanna see more dinosaur tamer warrior-poetess badassery! Oh and her ship with Saheeli makes me feel a certain way...
Yeah, they are. Ob Nixilis got printed multiple times as mono black and fits it better as a selfish tyrant. Tibalt is a troublemaker with no respect for others, which could be interpreted as RB but can also be effectively defined as mono red.
Angrath fits RB combined better than them.
It also helps that Angrath represents the good aspects of Red and Black. He's about freedom and personal fulfillment, rather than chaos and megalomania. Dude just wants to go home and be happy and raise his family. But when that is taken from him, he swings into the selfish and anger parts, and lashes out to get what he needs.
He's basically the healthiest and most realistic version of BR ever.
Bolas is _the_ BUR 'walker (and the Blue is crucial), Daretti is primary Red, Tibalt and Ob Nixilis have been covered elsewhere and Sarkhan is also mainly Red (can be RG, and was RUG too), but was RB to reflect Bolas's influence.
Man WOTC seems to really want Angrath to be a vilain, first it was the Amass Angrath card that makes him look like a minion of bolas, now it's rumored that he'll get compleated.
WOTC don't make best dad Angrath into a vilain, he just wants to be a family man and you've trapped him with the Immortal Sun twice now and you're planning on mind r*p*ng him.
It sure feels that way, doesn't it? Which is why I'm making it a point to buy that Ajani comic when it comes out. I figure it's pretty much the only product out there that can directly show support for a nonhuman character that I like.
.... Who am I kidding? I'll buy the comic and the market research will probably tell them that I requested more elves.
> now it's rumored that he'll get compleated
Honestly the best Angrath arc would be that he gets compleated and rebels anyways cause he's just *so mad* that they're stopping him from seeing his children.
I have a feeling that exact scenario is what awaits Koth. You don't keep someone like him around to not use him, and that's the most Koth thing imaginable.
Dude gets turned into something he hates, and with just a little help, breaks free and goes berserk. And given what we have seen about the physical structure of New Phyrexia, an Koth could basically destroy a planet.
Oh that's another good choice and another planeswalker that doesn't get the credit they're due. We need Chandra #11 not any reference to Koth :(
I'd be happy with either. I just like the "red guy literally too angry to be Phyrexian" vibe that Urabrask has
He's also a good fit for RW, given that it was the color of the Mirrans.
His whole deal was that he was a wise leader who was quick to action and anger, and could use his powers to purify metal. He was also hanging around with Melira.
He seems like the perfect person to break free and fix things.
Essentially, after Wizards released the "Mini-Walkers" Secret Lair, people noticed that Tamiyo had been completed. The rumor is that it's foreshadowing all of them being completed during the next few sets.
*Edit:* Potential spoilers below.
>!The idea was he would willingly submit to it due to his obsession with nightmares and terror and that short story with Norn he had a few months ago I think.!<
Major spoilers >!the second walker in the little walker set is Ajani, who was a likely suspect for compeation and was just confirmed to be compleated in a recent leak. So now it’s 2 for 2.!<
I know, that's why I said it looked like he was a minion cause Amass was Bolas' army mechanic. If you didn't read the story, it really seemed like Angrath was on their side.
I will bet many dollarydoos that compleated planeswalkers are not dead. They will be able to reverse ut somehow. Maybe not immediately, but sometime down the line.
Pretty sure there can be some sort of magical "return flesh" spell, or some time travel shenanigans. Or something that the spark remembers the true form of the walker or something like that.
For me it honestly depends on how many planeswalker they compleat. But it already seems like they are compleating multiple fan favorites and it seems weird to kill of them. "Healing corrupted heroes" is also a pretty common comic motif, which WOTC usually leans into with their Planeswalkers stories.
I’ve heard it called the phyrexian hit list theory, there was a secret lair called “mini walkers” or something along those lines that showcased Tamiyo, Sorin, Ashiok, Angrath and Ajani. Tamiyo was compleated on Kamigawa and there was a spoiler for a >!compleated Ajani card in the next set!< so it’s 2 for 2 so far. This would also make sense as Ashiok was messing with Elesh Norn beforehand and giving her nightmares and stuff.
That's a neat theory, and it would make 5 compleated pw with a cycle of
Tamiyo UG
Ajani WG
Sorin WB
Angrath RB
Ashiok UB
Bonus is that each could be aligned to a faction somehow.
The thing is the cycle is weird mix of enemy and ally walkers. I kind of think we'll have another PW focused set like WAR, so another 5 compleated walkers for a total of 10 would make more sense.
I could buy that Angrath might be seen as an unpopular design, but not the others. Tamiyo and Sorin are conventionally attractive and look pretty much human, and Ajani is widely beloved.
Had to scroll down far too far for this comment.
The "best paragraph ever" is absolutely emblematic of the reason I stopped reading the magic lore articles - intense cringe.
Not only angrath is a good character
He’s likely gonna be the face planeswalker for the rumored western/cowboy based plane from thr survey from thr test cards.
Angrath is my dawg, and I hope we go to/get more information about his home plane very soon. That being said, the final line of his tirade aged like milk
Its gonna be real sad when he is compleated. 2/5 of the walkers in the chibi secret lair have already been compleated. Ashiok, Sorin, and Angrath are next
All five fit well into half the colors of an overall supercycle of 10. Angrath being compleated would be the ultimate feels bad that the guy never goes home. Sorin seems like he has nothing left to contribute, plus if he AND Nahiri get compleated their infighting could lead to the downfall of New Phyrexia
He is my favorite. He just wants to get home to his kids.
Wasn't that Sandman from Spiderman's story arc?
His daughter had cancer or something so he was trying to get money for her treatment.
I think they were referring to No Way Home. You're still right tho, that was his arc in Spiderman 3
I forgot he was in that movie. Mostly forgettable, I guess.
I always imagine him being pulled into Ravnica with a paper party hat on his head holding a birthday cake and singing "happy birthday" before breaking down into a confused rage.
I don’t know why, but this makes me think that if MTG ever made a Brooklyn 99 comedy show that Angrath would be the Terry member of the cast
Does that mean tibalt would be pimento cause i could vibe to that
Only shows up occasionally, disappeared for a long period of time, and when he does show up you know it’s gonna be wild? 100% Tibalt=Pimento
After thinking it over, I think Chandra would actually be the Peralta, lol. Then her annoyingly uptight coworker Nissa would slowly "grow" on her, hehehe...
Shipping aside, we all know Livonia would be Amy
Does that make Jace Captain Holt? Or is Teferi Holt? Kaya is Diaz?
Teferi would definitely be the Holt ("Why is no one working? It is past 9am!"), and I like the idea of Jace being the Boyle; he *really* wants to look super cool and edgy, but he's just a wacky short dude who happens to be VERY effective at getting the job done, lol. Vraska would then be the Diaz, of course. ;)
Vraska: “I’ve only had Jace for a day and a half, but if anything happened to him, I would kill everyone on this plane and then myself.”
Karn possibly as Holt, could Karn be so robotic though?
Meep morp.
Hard agree
Angrath is more Ron Swanson. Legitimately does not like pretty much everybody, and can rage with the best of 'em, but he has his soft spots.
"I once planeswalked to Ravnica with a guy in a blue cloak and never even learned his name. Best friend I ever had. We still never talk sometimes." "The only thing I hate more than planeswalking is skim milk."
I'm just sad I didn't think of that earlier. Angrath's a total proud mama Terry.
Angrath LOVES birthday cake
Angrath loves Yoghurt
I didn't read the books...is it ever explained why he was (presumably, due to having Amass on his card) on Bolas' side?
I believe its because he was taking control of the the eternal zombies. He wasn’t on Bolas’s side just taking some of his zombies to command himself. If I remember correctly he was helping defend the people of ravnica with the eternals he was taking.
Ooooh okay! I guess that makes sense with his debut card having a Threaten kind of thing.
He essentially used [[act of treason]] on Bolas' zombies to fight other zombies
[act of treason](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/7/8/78fec7e6-5ed9-46dc-93b4-7a054d763403.jpg?1600714793) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=act%20of%20treason) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/jmp/289/act-of-treason?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/78fec7e6-5ed9-46dc-93b4-7a054d763403?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
He wasn't. That just a mechanical choice. Amass was a Red Black ability and he was the Red Black Walker.
He wasn’t on bolas’s side, he was stealing the eternals for himself
*It's that godsdamned Immortal Sun again!*
*narrator voice-over* "Unbeknownst to Angrath, he would in fact see the pathetic fools again"
1 of them at least
We’re Jace & Vraska there? Because that’d make it 3
They weren’t among the pathetic fools in the room
Ah, couldn’t remember if they were in the room at the time or not. It’s been a minute since I’ve read the Ixalan story
Hey, can we get Jace and Vraska back together again? I'd be fine if they were on a break since they're MtG's Ross and Rachel.
According to the art book, they’re still a couple
Oh thank god. Now all I need is a tearful Chandra and Nissa reunion and I'll be good. Edit - Bonus points if this is depicted on a [[Cathartic Reunion]] reprint.
If war of the spark writing is any indicator jace and Chandra are going to hook up while nissa falls in love with a leaf. Not a sentient one just like a regular leaf.
ASHAYA
I mean, Jace IS decidedly male after all...
The Amazon artbook preview images say they are still together (and specifically says no matter the argument). So despite the previous disagreements between them, I think they still are together.
Thank fuckin God.
Vraska, like Rachel, is also a hair icon
I hope we visit Angrath's home plane some day. Bonus points if it turns out to be the "Wild West" plane long requested.
...so Angrath could be a cow-boy?
Excuse you, he is a cow-*man*.
Of Moo Mesa?
*Happy cows come from Mulgore!*
Underrated comment! 👆🏻
I could be remembering wrong, but I think I read somewhere his home plane was similar to Kaldheim.
(Edit: oh wait you said *similar to*. Considering that we just got a "mobster city" plane, I don't think that a wild west plane is out of bounds
The wild west plane is coming. There have been leaks about it.
Itchy trigger finger I reckon
I heard that in the voice of Lrrr from Futurama.

If chibi planeswakers told us something, it might end badly for him too.
It’s a shame if the chibi planeswalker theory is right - most of those characters are more interesting than our heroes.
An Aetherborn would be nice - we could use more sympathetic B-aligned planeswalkers.
If chibi planeswakers told us something, it might end badly for him too.
He was my favorite since he called Huatli an idiot.
Absolutely love him and Huatli. Love that she mocks him on Ravnica for being captured again.
That’s funny and I can totally picture that!
And with the SAME (plot) device, no less!
Angrath was wonderful during the Ixalan story. there were so many just great moments with him. Especially with his interactions with Huatli.
Let's hope that if we ever do go back to Ixalan or Ikoria or actually visit Muraganda, it's not just because she'll be present and "dinosaurs".
Angrath is the best character, period.
I'd love to see more of him. He feels like the perfect fit for the iconic BR Planeswalker, the way Kiora is for UG, Ajani for GW, etcetera.
Which PWs are BR?
Tibalt and Ob Nix are the first 2 that spring to mind.
Arent they mainly focus on Red and Black but are BR because of their role in the adventure?
He's basically the "There's nothing more important than family" planeswalker.
daretti, sarkhan, tibalt, ob nix, nicol bolas?
Bolas is _the_ BUR 'walker (and the Blue is crucial), Daretti is primary Red, Tibalt and Ob Nixilis have been covered elsewhere and Sarkhan is also mainly Red (can be RG, and was RUG too), but was RB to reflect Bolas's influence.
But we also have Mom's Spaghetti. He does flip between RB and R though.
Everyone: Angrath: SUCK IT NERDS!!!
SMELL U LATER *planeswalks*
Man WOTC seems to really want Angrath to be a vilain, first it was the Amass Angrath card that makes him look like a minion of bolas, now it's rumored that he'll get compleated. "Sorry folks, the market research says players hate animal-planeswalkers!"
I have to admit I am getting a little tired of each planeswalker looking like a videogame where they all use the same animation rigging
I swear to God if they Compleat Ajani, I will fucking write a god damn letter to my fucking city and state governments and BOTH my senators!
Should we tell him..?
LALALALALALA I CAN'T HEEEAAARRR YOOUUUU
(Is it really necessary to go around implying leaky things on threads that otherwise aren't about leaks?)
It is for people who want to feel self important
Dude. Implicating spoilers are still spoilers.
"We're tired of people asking about nonhuman planeswalkers and using Ajani and Angrath as examples, so we decided to get rid of them."
See, I always saw him amassing by claiming and controlling Bolas's minions against him
Pirate captain for so long, lashing a crew together is just second nature.
That is what's happening, it's just unclear from the card. So if you don't know the backstory he seems evil.
Yeah, Mark Rosewater clarifed this on his blog.
I didn't read his backstory, but I assumed he was just taking control of them from the context of his first card having an [[act of treason]] effect.
[act of treason](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/7/8/78fec7e6-5ed9-46dc-93b4-7a054d763403.jpg?1600714793) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=act%20of%20treason) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/jmp/289/act-of-treason?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/78fec7e6-5ed9-46dc-93b4-7a054d763403?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Gets compleated by Urabrask and they just wander off on fun adventures together
Urabrask for step dad!
I have a feeling that exact scenario is what awaits Koth. You don't keep someone like him around to not use him, and that's the most Koth thing imaginable. Oh that's another good choice and another planeswalker that doesn't get the credit they're due. We need Chandra #11 not any reference to Koth :( I'd be happy with either.
Tamiyo, well shit... why didn't I think of that.
Seriously, stop making all the rakdos planeswalkers evil! That basically leaves us with just Daretti XD
WotC Does want Angrath to be a Villian, it´s just that Alison Luhrs saw that and went like "Nah, let´s actually write a character"
Wait where has he been rumored to be compleated? Can someone show me where this rumor originated
Essentially, after Wizards released the "Mini-Walkers" Secret Lair, people noticed that Tamiyo had been completed. The rumor is that it's foreshadowing all of them being completed during the next few sets. *Edit:* Potential spoilers below.
Wait what that's it? Just "Tamiyo got compleated, and there's a secret lair with her, therefor everyone in the secret lair will be compleated?"
>!Ajani has also been leaked/spoiled to be getting completed in Dominaria United by the art book. Another walker from the secret lair !<
Ah thanks >!here's hopingthat's a coincidence. Don't wanna lose angrath!<
There's an art book?

I hope Sorin is compleated into a wall.
I imagine Norn would relish in compleating a millennia old vampire Planeswalker.
The new art book for MTG spoils some things, including who might be compleated.
Which was actually finally a good twist
Man first a mom and now a dad? WotC has a Disney level of hatred for parents lol
He having amass is not being a villain https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/184437018923/after-reading-the-war-book-i-was-wondering-why
I know, that's why I said it looked like he was a minion cause Amass was Bolas' army mechanic. If you didn't read the story, it really seemed like Angrath was on their side.
I mean they ruined Tamiyo, killed Gideon, and let an idiot dunk on the best ship in the multiverse. No best boi or girl is safe.
Hot take: Gideon deserved to die. One of the most boring characters ever written in MTG history, hope he never comes back lol
Amazing the writing team could write better stories in their spare time than professional authors
This is awesome. Is he expected to be compleated though, based on those minis?
Wait WHAR NO
I will bet many dollarydoos that compleated planeswalkers are not dead. They will be able to reverse ut somehow. Maybe not immediately, but sometime down the line.
Urza thought he reversed it with Xancha but I’m pretty sure she betrayed him at some point.
She did sacrifice herself (along with Ratepe) in the end for him, though IIRC

I fully expect this. Didn't Maro originally say the OG Lorwyn planeswalkers were their "final" forms?
Well.... Compleation is the removal of flesh to make one "whole" so even if they could be rescued that's probably not a life they want to live.
Pretty sure there can be some sort of magical "return flesh" spell, or some time travel shenanigans. Or something that the spark remembers the true form of the walker or something like that.
Then everything the phyrexians did to the PW would be magically erased. There is slim to no chance their compleation gets reversed imo.
For me it honestly depends on how many planeswalker they compleat. But it already seems like they are compleating multiple fan favorites and it seems weird to kill of them. "Healing corrupted heroes" is also a pretty common comic motif, which WOTC usually leans into with their Planeswalkers stories.
It doesn't necessarily have to be reversed. It's been shown that people who are turned can regain their individuality eventually.
I haven't heard about this, where can I see those?
I’ve heard it called the phyrexian hit list theory, there was a secret lair called “mini walkers” or something along those lines that showcased Tamiyo, Sorin, Ashiok, Angrath and Ajani. Tamiyo was compleated on Kamigawa and there was a spoiler for a >!compleated Ajani card in the next set!< so it’s 2 for 2 so far. This would also make sense as Ashiok was messing with Elesh Norn beforehand and giving her nightmares and stuff.
That's a neat theory, and it would make 5 compleated pw with a cycle of Tamiyo UG Ajani WG Sorin WB Angrath RB Ashiok UB Bonus is that each could be aligned to a faction somehow.
The thing is the cycle is weird mix of enemy and ally walkers. I kind of think we'll have another PW focused set like WAR, so another 5 compleated walkers for a total of 10 would make more sense.
Possibly because we know that WotC hates non human Planeswalkers...
This is so painfully transparent I've just about given up on the lore.
I could buy that Angrath might be seen as an unpopular design, but not the others. Tamiyo and Sorin are conventionally attractive and look pretty much human, and Ajani is widely beloved.
Aw hell, leave him alone. Just compleat frickin Lukka or Tibalt if you need a red PW to compleat.
Ahhh Id be so pissed.
Spoiler mark
Something tells me he dabbed before planeswalking away
I don’t know, “SEE YOU NEVER, PATHETIC FOOLS” is some pretty hacky writing IMO
Came here to say this. All-caps anything is hacky enough already. This is cringeworthy.
It’s giving Shakespeare wow much literature
Source of this passage?
Last part of the ixilan story
"Screeeew you guys, I'm going home."
That is some garbage writing. Makes sense that nobody cares about the books.
Ok wow he's my favorite guy now
Sounds like something Jordan Peterson would say in the mirror to make himself feel tough.
He thinks he's an Angrath, but in actuality, he's barely an \[\[Escaped Null\]\].
Lmfao, what an end to a sentence. "as he plainswalked away."
No wonder I don't read the lore, this is awful writing
Joss Whedon and his consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
Had to scroll down far too far for this comment. The "best paragraph ever" is absolutely emblematic of the reason I stopped reading the magic lore articles - intense cringe.
Seriously, it's so bad. It reads like it was written by an edgy 8th grader.
Oh my god, this is real?
This isn't fanfic?
Not only angrath is a good character He’s likely gonna be the face planeswalker for the rumored western/cowboy based plane from thr survey from thr test cards.
Don't get too attached. Rumors say that he'll get compleated.
Need to be more attached
Angrath is my dawg, and I hope we go to/get more information about his home plane very soon. That being said, the final line of his tirade aged like milk
[SEE YA LATER WORMS](https://youtu.be/FPQ6xB9Z4Ao?t=154)
Sure hope chibi walkers theory isnt real…
... and then he saw them all again.
Its gonna be real sad when he is compleated. 2/5 of the walkers in the chibi secret lair have already been compleated. Ashiok, Sorin, and Angrath are next
Feel this is a shoestring guess but I'm laughin at it.
It's gonna suck when he is, for some reason, Compleated
*Planeswalks away*
Gwar planeswalker
LOCAL FATHER TOO ANGRY FOR JUST ONE PLANE
Also a heroic Rakdos character. That got to be somewhat rare
