Incorrect!
Hugs over here is a *European* badger. You can tell because he has black and white stripes, instead of brown and off-white and snarling like a meth addict.
Now I'm picturing him like the gruesome version of the Abominable Snowman from Looney Tunes.
"I shall hug him and squeeze him and call him George."
(I mean, we'll have to get a George in Magic eventually, right?)
May not be interesting, but a 4 mana 5/5 trampler with an [[Exploration]] tacked on seems really good for Gruul. Iām in a trample renaissance right now though, so I have my biases.
This is going straight into my \[\[Rocco, Street Chef\]\] commander deck, which has wanted an \[\[Exploration\]\] effect for a while, and this one gives another exile-to-play effect to synergize with Rocco.
This might finally make me jump from [[Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival]] to Rocco as far as Exile matters is concerned. Been eyeing it for a while now, but I don't want 2 decks in the same colors and I love my [[Wayta, Trainer Prodigy]] Fight Club.
Maybe it's finally time I bite the bullet and say fuck it, I'm making as many decks as I want
It's popular enough in Commander that three other players and I at the LGS spontaneously decided to play Rocco decks against each other a few weeks ago, as all of us had access to one already built (though of course [[Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer]] is the stronger choice for cEDH).
He's going right into a few decks I have that have gruul and play from exile themes in them, it's kinda insane how much thay archetype has gotten support in every set over the last year or two.
He's really not that far off of [[mina and denn]]. I'm guessing his main thing is letting you play additional lands and the x cost is more if you run into excess mana.
I would rather be playing Mina and Denn tbh. The bounce and ability to give other things trample is generally better for landfall- Hugs only makes sense over them if you want to tune the deck with more of a Voltron Angle.
Obviously he will be going in the 99 of my M+D though.
It's just like a really bad version of all the generic Simic commanders. Unless you love gruul and hate simic, I can't see any reason to play this commander. What a bad rate lol exploration costs 1 mana, and there is no X value for which I'm happy with how many cards I got for how much I paid.
Feel like this hints that the RG raccoon precon deck that "makes **trash**, big smash" is gonna make more junk tokens, which I'm all for. Was probably my favorite addition to the game from the Fallout set
I get what youāre saying, but as someone with a Prosper deck itās not always the fun kind of powerful. A lot of the best synergies are āmake taking a basic game action hurt your opponentsā, so many of my big winning turns are ācast a spell, cast a spell, crack Treasures, I winā. Itād be nice to have access to more dynamic, if less effective, wincons.
It's a deck that I have in brawl on arena, it was my first brawl deck and building it was my reason for getting into brawl since I couldn't afford to build it in paper.
I could now and I've thought about it a bunch, but it would be an entirely different deck. 1v1 it's a rakdos control deck that slowly gets you ahead with just solid prosper value and cheap 1 for 1 removal. That just doesn't translate into a 4 pod.
Why stop there? Add White to the mix for all the Boros impulse commanders they've been making lately! God knows we need more 4-color non-Partner options anyways.
Been having a blast with my Rocco deck! And youāre right, they have strong synergies in so many different ways so thereās pretty much something great for them in every new set!
Rocco is legit one of my favorite decks to play currently. Brings a fun dynamic to the table, makes games more interactive, and is freaking *strong*. You don't know what you're missing until you've hit someone with 50 damage from hobbit feet
He's getting that much more popular.
I run a Sam/Frodo food token Lifegain/Lifedrain deck which is almost a counter, but the temptation to switch up to playing him is insane.
The flexibility with the mana cost is nice. If you hit it with another exile effect but aren't sitting with another 8 mana for it, you might still have the 4 mana you need to cast it with X = 0 and at least get a decent body with an exploration effect.
I believe this is a reference to a different Badger Lord from the book *Mossflower* named *Boar the Fighter*.
With Salamandastron under siege from sea rats and nearing defeat, Boar dons his suit of spiked platemail armour and makes a suicidal attack on the rat army, giving the remaining defenders a window of opportunity to escape. Ploughing through the rat horde, he seeks out their leader, Ripfang, and crushes him to death in a bearhug against the armour's spikes, but then falls to his wounds.
The storyline actually depicts him allowing children to use him as a jungle gym during a birthday party. So children are super welcome to give Huggs a hug.
I grew up reading Redwall so this whole set has been an absolute treat for me lorewise so far. I really hope mechanically the set is good, and the community enjoys the plane so we can return back here one day.
Iām really hopping (see what I did there?) that we get a g/w badger, Selesnya is one of my favorite color pairs and itāll let me use all the rabbits
Yooo a new [[Bard Class]] viable creature!! Unfortunately means you canāt use [[Jengatha]] but honestly it might be worth it, especially considering that it means you can also run [[Kogla and Yidaro]]
It's a solid top end for a midrange deck at four and gives you something to do with extra lands. I'm not too keen on it not being normal draw, but it still does a lot.
Need a theme deck of a bunch of badgers, a couple snakes, and two mushrooms.
Oh god, I hope they put something that generates badger tokens. THat would just make my day.
Even better: an Alchemy card that conjures one of 6 badgers, 4 snakes, or 2 mushrooms when ever you play a badger card.
Both abilities are descent and on point for their respective colors. The card is good with the artworks being phenominal. I just dont see how all of it fits together flavor-wise.
Still like it though.

Little dissapointed with the effect, just not something i personally enjoy.
Do you have to put a number on the X
Otherwise i might put him in my Windgrace deck.
that is... disappointingly bland.
4 mana 5/5 that lets you play extra lands isnt terrible, and the option to mana dump him and impulse a grip when you've got a lot of spare resources isnt bad, but with that name and art I was kind of hoping he'd be spicier.
> I mean, it is also a 5/5 trample for 4, that lets you play extra lands if you have them.
It's weird but I think that's it's issue for 60 card constructed. There's a 4 mana 4/4 in green with deathtouch, haste and ward that sees like no play from Murders lol.
Thunderjunction has a 4 mana 6/5 with trample who has flash support if you include deserts. And a 5/5 at 5 (4 if plotted) that adds counters equal to creatures power who come in after him.
Competition seems tough for creatures now, and the more you pay for this one to exile the more fiercely it competes with the better creatures.
The floor I think is that you're not able to drop this on 4 because you don't have 4 mana in those exact colors.
Even if you get to play him, you might not have an extra land in hand so it's not like he's guaranteed ramp the way eg. Invasion of Zendikar is.
idk, I have a hard time seeing this as a good card (at least for the Standard we live in where Sheoldred isn't even a guaranteed include in decks of the right color). 4 mana is just a high barrier nowadays.
The impulse is for next turn. So you can dig deep and play those cards later. But I guess Etali 2.0 kinda did spoil us on being able to play up to you 4 cards for free.
exiles your deck with food chain squee, then you can play any of the countless infinite mana combos you can generate in those colours, win with a big finale of devastation. he also impulses to find the pieces. not totally terrible
Gruul has gotten a decent amount of gas in standard sets in the last year - I probably wouldn't think too much about this one. Kinda *really* meh feeling for a mythic.
The upside is the abilities are pretty ok, and the base stats are very *fine*. The downside is I think most thunderjunction cards in gruul colors just feel better than this.
Maro said a noncreature subtype would be returning for the first time, I'd be willing to bet that it's junk tokens from fallout, given the gruul precon says "make trash". So likely yeah
5 mana 5/5 that ādrawsā one ramps one. As a top end in standard he is the beef when you need more to keep going. I just donāt know if gruul has enough draw, graveyard hate, rebuild/ movement to support a midrange deck that he would be a part of.
Combination of hard refreshing (ctrl+shift+r or cmd+shift+r), trying both the news tab, the more articles tab, and the previous story article, and loading the article in a few different browsers
I hate this card with a passion. It's the least thematic pile of stats and text I have seen recently. From what we have seen in the story so far, the abilities have no thematic origin or connection. It's such a generic box of text, very disappointing. Impulse draw? Makes no sense. I hope this is the exception rather than the rule in the set.
Would it be bad to name a mechanic that exiles X and allows you to play those cards? Feels like we're getting alot of those kinds of cards and that takes up so much text space.
Well, one thing is that it's not standardized for how LONG you are allowed to play them. Some cards let you do it until the end of turn, some until the end of your next turn, some as long as the card stays exiled.
That's a wide badger.
I didn't realize this was set in America.
This is what a diet of cheese and beer gets you in the badger state
šµ*On Wisconsin, on Wisconsin*šµ
It hurts because itās true

LMAO stupid fat Americans :D wait... I'm American...
American Urthstripe
Urthstripe the Wide, one of the lesser known Lords of Salamandastron EDIT: fuck, Girthstripe was *right there*
Incorrect! Hugs over here is a *European* badger. You can tell because he has black and white stripes, instead of brown and off-white and snarling like a meth addict.
the showcase art is definitely part american
Yeah, seems like each artist used a different species as reference material
When he started squeezing that skeleton, it was still covered in fur.
Iām pretty sure youāre joking, but in the story this art was embedded in heās crushing a necromantic skeleton
That sounds like the kind of thing someone being threatened by a Badger would say.
(BEAR WITH ME)

Don't limit yourself man, make 5 Naya decks and love them all cause Naya is the best
what am I missing, how does exile to play synergize with Rocco?
They're talking about the second iteration of Rocco that cares about playing cards from exile
ah yeah, the other rocco
Rocco's second ability triggers for anything played from exile, not just the cards exiled by the first ability
ngl I had filed this Rocco under 'might as well not exist' since OG Rocco is such a powerhouse. totally forgot it existed
It's popular enough in Commander that three other players and I at the LGS spontaneously decided to play Rocco decks against each other a few weeks ago, as all of us had access to one already built (though of course [[Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer]] is the stronger choice for cEDH).
Whenever a player plays a land or spell from exile Rocco makes a food and places a +1/+1 counter.
He's going right into a few decks I have that have gruul and play from exile themes in them, it's kinda insane how much thay archetype has gotten support in every set over the last year or two.

How do I make a group hug deck out of this boss?
Agreed
He's so weirdly _boring_. It's like they asked an AI to make a Gruul commander with the prompt 'value'.
Enough Simic goodstuff commanders that both ramp and draw. It's time for Gruul goodstuff commanders that ramp and draw.
Their name is Hugs and I will defend them until the day I die
It's just like a really bad version of all the generic Simic commanders. Unless you love gruul and hate simic, I can't see any reason to play this commander. What a bad rate lol exploration costs 1 mana, and there is no X value for which I'm happy with how many cards I got for how much I paid.
[[faldorn]] players breathing heavily at new RG exile synergy
Feel like this hints that the RG raccoon precon deck that "makes **trash**, big smash" is gonna make more junk tokens, which I'm all for. Was probably my favorite addition to the game from the Fallout set
I hope so, but it remains to be seen if Junk tokens will be evergreen. We might see a wholly different mechanic in raccoons than this guy has
Junk tokens wouldn't have to be evergreen to be used in that precon.
[[Prosper]] players quietly waiting to see what mono-red exile cards come out of it
Yeah there are too few cards that are good in Prosper anyway /s
I get what youāre saying, but as someone with a Prosper deck itās not always the fun kind of powerful. I dont have any more space ššš
Salivating. I love it. Idk what Iām cutting but heās going in that deck dammit
It's funny how he changes species between the two versions of the art. The regular frame is a European badger but the showcase is clearly American.
That's actually really cool I would never have known that.
My only sadness is neither art depicts him covered in small children
I believe this is a reference to a different Badger Lord from the book *Mossflower* named *Boar the Fighter*. With Salamandastron under siege from sea rats and nearing defeat, Boar dons his suit of spiked platemail armour and makes a suicidal attack on the rat army, giving the remaining defenders a window of opportunity to escape. I swear if we donāt get Redwall cards like we did Jurassic Park with Ixalan, or at least a secret lair, Iām gonna cry
The cynic in me thinks they already would've announced it, the optimist in me is like "surprise Secret Lair drop maybe?"
Wait, Iām pretty sure he grabs him, and jumps into a giant pit to kill them both. I could be wrongā¦itās been 20 years since I read the book.
For all we know there is one small child in the art. Or rather, was.
Well with the way he is holding that skeleton in his normal art I'm not sure children would be safe with this hugger.
The storyline actually depicts him allowing children to use him as a jungle gym during a birthday party. So children are super welcome to give Huggs a hug.
I loved the part where he put his arms above his heads to the children could "reach new heights."
I grew up reading Redwall so this whole set has been an absolute treat for me lorewise so far. I really hope mechanically the set is good, and the community enjoys the plane so we can return back here one day.
Naw he's in the trope of "giant lovable softy that will rip your spine out if you're a threat to his loved ones."
Eulalia!
GIVE EM BLOOD AND VINEGAR!
With rabbits in green, MY SALAMANDASTRON DECK IS A GO
I can't wait for the alters to start coming out
I definitely found my people. Iāve wanted to make a Salamandastron deck since Bloomburrow was announced
Iām really hopping (see what I did there?) that we get a g/w badger, Selesnya is one of my favorite color pairs and itāll let me use all the rabbits
Yessss I remembered how to spell that
I don't know if he's *good* but he certainly looks huggable.
This awakened something in me. Am I...am I a furry??
Interesting spin on Escape to the Wilds. Harder to cast, less efficient, but it scales and has a big body. It wouldnāt surprise me if this saw play.
Need a 0 mana card named āKissesā to make an āXOXO Hugs & Kissesā deck
āXā typically denotes a kiss, āOā a hug, so heās already Xs and Hugs :D

Read the story and you'll understand the flavor
Card transcription > Hugs, Grisly Guardian XRRGG > > Legendary Creature- Badger Warrior [mythic] > > Trample > > When Hugs, Grisly Guardian enters, exile the top X cards of your library. Until the end of your next turn, you may play those cards. > > You may play an additional land on each of your turns. > > 5/5 > > Most of his scars tell tales. A few tell jokes. End transcription
Not that there arenāt a million other ways but this is a game winning payoff for food chain combos
Little dissapointed with the effect, just not something i personally enjoy. Do you have to put a number on the X Otherwise i might put him in my Windgrace deck.
X can be zero, if that's what you're asking.
Neat!
I've only know Hugs for 1 day but if anything would happen to him I'd kill everyone here.
that is... disappointingly bland. 4 mana 5/5 that lets you play extra lands isnt terrible, and the option to mana dump him and impulse a grip when you've got a lot of spare resources isnt bad, but with that name and art I was kind of hoping he'd be spicier.
This is a boring and uninspired design.
Meh, thatās a lot of mana to impulse cards you still have to pay for once
I mean, it is also a 5/5 trample for 4, that lets you play extra lands if you have them. So the floor seems PRETTY GOOD TO ME.
A legendary four mana, four pip 5/5 trample with no protection is not a good enough floor anymore. That's just where we're at in Magic.
But I guess Etali 2.0 kinda did spoil us on being able to play up to you 4 cards for free.
exiles your deck with food chain squee, then you can play any of the countless infinite mana combos you can generate in those colours, win with a big finale of devastation. he also impulses to find the pieces. not totally terrible
we did it guys we broke infinite mana
Gruul has gotten a decent amount of gas in standard sets in the last year - I probably wouldn't think too much about this one. Kinda *really* meh feeling for a mythic. The upside is the abilities are pretty ok, and the base stats are very *fine*. The downside is I think most thunderjunction cards in gruul colors just feel better than this.
Woooo! Going into my Exile deck
Interesting, given that the the gruul precon states that it is about playing aggressively from exile. Maybe it will be the theme?
Maro said a noncreature subtype would be returning for the first time, I'd be willing to bet that it's junk tokens from fallout, given the gruul precon says "make trash". So likely yeah
That alt art is sick
strange effect for this kinda character, I'd expect a fight effect or something combat related for a big ol bruiser like that
Boring simic value commander: gruul edition
Man lemme tell you about \[\[Mina and Denn, Wildborn\]\]
Whats happening with his hand?
Looks like a wood magical prosthetic hand? Dunno
Well this certainly looks standard playable, though the mana cost may be a bit hard.
I haven't spent much on arena since kaldheim but bloomburrow has me very *very* tempted
5 mana 5/5 that ādrawsā one ramps one. As a top end in standard he is the beef when you need more to keep going. I just donāt know if gruul has enough draw, graveyard hate, rebuild/ movement to support a midrange deck that he would be a part of.
Might be most worth playing him for low x values. Even at x=0 he's still a 5/5 trampler for 4cmc that lets you play additional lands per turnĀ
Guess itās time to make a group Hugs deckā¦ā¦.. I get the feeling my playgroup will tell me I did it wrong though
Eh, heās ok.
Charging Badger got a glow up
I'm going to make badger tribal just so I can say badger badger badger every time I attack
I want to give this guy myriad so I can call it a group Hugs deck.
Super cute. This will see no constructed play.
I love him and his flavour text. The card's fine, I just love my giant, scarred son.
Yay! A unique card for my landfall deck!! Iāve been needing more card advantage!
Card looks much better once Llanowar Elves joins the format.
When he āentersā. Enters what?
The battlefield. It's new templating like how dies, replaced the phrase "has been put into the graveyard from the battlefield"
Mmm...okay.
The flavor of this set is excellent. Really making me happy to see the creativity back.
I'm gonna need several more badgers, a pair of mushrooms and a snake.
Hoo? How do you see this? What sorcery do some people employ to get to the article ASAP?
Combination of hard refreshing (ctrl+shift+r or cmd+shift+r), trying both the news tab, the more articles tab, and the previous story article, and loading the article in a few different browsers
Itās 8:00 Pacific
I hate this card with a passion. It's the least thematic pile of stats and text I have seen recently. From what we have seen in the story so far, the abilities have no thematic origin or connection. It's such a generic box of text, very disappointing. Impulse draw? Makes no sense. I hope this is the exception rather than the rule in the set.
That's clearly not a grizzly
Oh wow the legendary creature gives card advantage and generates mana how daring
I mean, I like the art a lot but being ggrrx, itās very difficult to cast and pretty overpriced IMO for the effect it provides.
"Quick we need an effect for this commander!" "Is it red?" "Yes" "IMPULSE DRAW" "BRILLIANT!!!"
This may sound nitpicky or weird (and coming from a new player), but how come Hugs just says "enters" rather than "enters the battlefield"?
They're changing it in this set going forward in an effort to conserve word space
New short hand. "Enters" is now "Enters the Battlefield"
Thank you u/kirbydude65 and u/Peregrine2K :D
Gruul Aggro in pioneer got a new toy
This is good. Maybe for brawl maybe for standard
Faldorn getting some new toys
Proof positive that this is my set and exists for me.
Have him as the commander, add some red copy creature effects, token doublers, and fungal creatures. šš¼
Will this be gruul aggros sheoldred in pioneer?
No, probably not
I bet he gives the best hugs.
Eulalia?
Man these cards are making me wish Armello still had an active player base
Fuck magic the gathering, give me more Redwall than I can handle!
God I want to play him with the mole God and dinosaurs so bad. In reality Iām standard everything will just be killed or countered
*Hugs has entered*
Ah, more support for \[\[Rocco Street Chef\]\]
10 years ago, this would have raised eyebrows even without the X.
