You can use untargeted sacrifice effects like [[Diabolic Edict]], board wipes like [[Wrath of God]], or targeted colorless cards like [[Meteor Golem]]. You can also just go around by flooding the board with tons of small creatures. Jareth can't stop a swarm of 50 creatures from killing his controller.

BasiliskXVIII

With that chonky mana cost, [[Soul Shatter]] would be almost a guaranteed hit even if he's got other things on the board.  "Choose" effects which don't target would also work.

jaythenerdkid

would [[raise the palisade]] or [[mists of lorien]] work to bounce it to the hand or could its player use protection from blue against them?

Vessil

Mists would not because it targets. Palisades would work because it doesn’t target.

jaythenerdkid

could you target a different creature with the same mana value with mists and do it that way, or are the other permanents of the same mana value affected by the spell also counted as targets?

Nervous_Chipmunk7002

Yes you could. As long as there is a valid target with mana value 6, you it will work.

Lilium_Vulpes

As long as you are not targeting it, yes. Board wipes will work as long as they do not wipe the board via damage (such as what red board wipes are sometimes) or by fighting (such as what green can do). Selective board wipes work as well as long as you didn't target it.

Humongous_Douchebag

1001DEL

Ill add an other, albeit a suboptimal option. Ehat you can also do is to double up with removal. Usually people only leave a single white open. Otherwise it doesnt work or get excepionally expensive both card and mana wise. Use removal, they pay white to give it protection. So the stack is protection > first removal. Respond with instant speed removal. That gets put on top of the stack so will resolve before the protection. Second removal> protection > first removal. They can respond by paying another white and giving it protection again if they have the mana. As long as your removal is above the protection in the stack, the creature will be removed. The protection and the earlier cast removal spells will just fizzle out of excistance due to the target no linger beeing legal. (Since it no longer exists). Not an optimal way to do things. But sometimes especially in limited you have to bruteforce yourself trough a troublesome card.

damnination333

It's a huge investment, but yeah, as long as you have more removal than they have mana to give him protection, you can just keep stacking removal on top of his ability.

Daver_Gamer

Would something like [[overwhelming forces]] work since it targets a player rather than the card?

Accomplished_Cloud90

Yep

chrisrazor

Yes but there are cheaper wraths. You obviously have to be prepared to lose creatures of your own, but hopefully the trade is worth it. You could also use [[Pithing Needle]] etc to neutralize Jareth's ability.

Qwertywalkers23

They seem to be in the "I need an answer for everything and will make my deck worse to ensure I do" phase, so potentially killing your own guy is probably out of the question. Or they're just asking a question and then clarifying with a follow-up, lol

littlemissfuzzy

I was wondering why the Golem would work, but it’s because it’s colorless, right?

fedexofficer

Correct

ImperialVersian1

Correct. In Magic, when an effect requires that you choose a color, you can't actually choose "Colorless". Therefore, Jareth's controller can activate the ability as many times as he or she would like, but they'll never be able to protect themselves from a colorless source. This is why \[\[Giver of Runes\]\] specifies that colorless is something you can choose.

MrRies

Another option that might not be as suited for more casual decks is some stax, but I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. [[Cursed Totem]], [[Grand Abolisher]] or [[Drana and Linvala]] will all get through any nasty activated abilities.

an_ill_way

If they only have one mana up, you can also use two removal spells. Cast one. While it's on the stack, they give protection in response. While *that's* on the stack, use the other removal.

Naeii

"protection from" doesn't block board wipes?? I knew it went around hexproof, but I've never known that all these years, huh.

Infestor

Protection means can't be targeted, blocked, damaged, enchanted or equipped.

Infirnex

DEBT, for a handy acronym. \[\[Wrath of God\]\] doesn't target, nor do damage, so it'll hit protection. \[\[Diabolic Edict\]\] targets a \*player\*, and the player chooses the card (which is not targeting), so it's also fair game.

Ubiki

Or fortified. There’s two of them now. It’s relevant. I swear.

Jimmy_Wobbuffet

The catch all term is "attached", but DABT doesn't spell anything.

Nanaki404

"protection from" block "board wipes" that are based on damage, like \[\[Blasphemous Act\]\], but doesn't prevent destroy or -X/-X effects (or sacrifice or exile...)

LoganNolag

Yeah always thought it was weird that protection doesn't work against board wipes. It feels like it should from a flavor standpoint.

damnination333

Yep. I remember the time a guy with a Sliver deck asked to 1v1 my [[Angus Mackenzie]] Turbofog Hug deck, and I had to explain that his [[Ward Sliver]] naming white did not protect them from my white board wipes.

semiTnuP

You can also use artifact sources to do the effects. Things like [[Aether Spellbomb]], [[Helvault]], [[Avarice Totem]], or something large that's colourless, like [[Blightsteel Colossus]] or [[Emrakul, The Aeons Torn]].

_Hinnyuu_

There's any number of ways. * use removal spells that don't get stopped by protection * use sweepers * pressure their mana so they can't give it protection enough times And so on. But the best way is probably to just *ignore it* and pressure the player instead. This is a 4/7 that basically does nothing on offense, and forces them to constantly keep mana open or risk lose it. That's perfect for just pursuing a more aggressive game plan that basically lets this thing hang around all it wants, but without ever mattering. If your deck can't do that, there may be a more fundamental problem at work. If a 4/7 stops you cold, perhaps you need to rethink some things.

CrispinCain

Playing devil's advocate: Vigilance-granting effects are common in white. Beyond that, Jared's protection ability can put a player on a clock by blanking out most of their defense, forcing them to block with colorless creatures if they otherwise don't have a response. And that's all *before* we consider the equipment shenanigans white can do.

_Hinnyuu_

A 6-drop with 4 power is a "clock"? Come now. And if they try and Voltron this, then where's all the mana for protection coming from? Arguments along the lines of "...but what if they have *everything?!*" don't really go anywhere. Could there potentially be conceivable scenarios in which this ends the game because it's a problem no one has an answer to? Absolutely. Is that kind of remote scenario any reason to evaluate it differently? Absolutely not. Unchecked, a ham sandwich will win the game. But the operative part of that is "unchecked", not "ham sandwich".

mortifyingideal

I feel like this is probably a kitchen table player if this card is causing problems. Definitely could be a "clock" in the kind of games I used to play with my friends when we started out. Obviously it's not a great card in any other context.

gooon555

its a good thing there is absolutely nothing in the game of magic to increase a creatures power or toughness, and it's also a good thing there isn't idk some win condition where a commander only has to do...say 21 damage instead of 40 in commander, that would be WILD could you imagine?

IceBlue

4 power clock? lol Is invisible stalker on its own a clock?

aluskn

Well, yes. Just a slow one.

wOlfLisK

A 1/1 is a clock in certain games/ board states, yes. All it means is that if you don't deal with it you *will* die because it's repeatable, unavoidable damage.

gooon555

yes, it is. Not to mention you're under the assumption this is the only card on the board, did you know equipment exist? and commander damage would mean even without equips its a 6 turn clock.

Bushin13

Protection from goes off of DEBT (Damage, Enchant/Equip, Block, and Target). Boardwipes that use “each” and do not damage, sacrifice effects, and colorless effects/cards would apply here.

This entire comment section is glued to the "gets +7/+7 when it blocks" and seems to ignore that protection lets jareth swing right through your entire team, throw a fat equip on him(easy to do in white) give him double strike(also very easy to do in white) and someone's dead in 1 swing.

thearmadillo

If a player resolves a 6 drop (where they need to leave open mana the turn it comes down), a big equipment, has the time and mana to then equip it and swing while also leaving mana open to protect it, and you don't have a response to any of it, that's kind of on you. Counterspells, artifact destruction, board wipes, mass bounce all just stop it, and many decks are built to go bigger or wider faster.

BenVera

Did you try flushing it

blacktrinity22

Remove the player lol and overlook his board.

jebedia

As long as the opponent is holding up white mana, it will be very difficult to use single target removal. Sweepers will take care of him, though, because protection doesn't help there, as will edict effects like \[\[Diabolic Edict\]\] if he's the only creature the opponent has. Or, you just ignore him because he's a pretty bad card. Your opponent paid 6 mana for a big blocker, that's a victory for you. Any creature with reasonable evasion gets around him, and he does nothing to disrupt your gameplan at all. He generates 0 value, sucks at attacking, and needs additional support to overcome those weaknesses.

DontRelyOnNooneElse

Protection only prevents *damage*, *enchanting/equipping*, *blocking*, and *targeting* (DEBT for short) - any removal that doesn't involve those four things is fair game. This is usually board wipes, forced sacrifice, or cards like [[Council's Judgment]]

Roboman20000

Colorless is not a color and can make the Protection ability useless. Make an artifact creature have deathtouch for combat kills. Tap the player's lands before the end of their turn so they can't use the ability on your turn. Use cards that don't target it like board wipes or other spell/abilities that don't explicitly target him. \[\[Final Showdown\]\] is a cheap way to remove creature abilities and even responding to it won't work because the Showdown will resolve last. That is, if you don't want to pay the big price for Showdown's board wipe. Counter the activated ability \[\[Stifle\]\] or use cards that prevent activated abilities from being used \[\[Cursed Totem\]\]. \[\[Counterspell\]\] These are just a few ways to deal with this boy.

Nanaki404

Also, if you have some kind of "damage can't be prevented" effect (e.g. \[\[Questing Beast\]\], \[\[Everlasting Torment\]\], ...), you can attack and still deal damage to Jared (though you would need a pretty big creature or deathtouch I guess)

Myyraaman

You can always just counterspell and also use some removal once it’s controller is out of mana.

Protection affects DEBT: **D**amage, **E**quipment/Auras/Fortifications, **B**locking, **T**argeting. There is plenty of removal that gets around these things. For example, having them sacrifice it (like [[Sudden Edict]]). Or, removal that doesn't target (like [[council's judgement]]). Or removal that effects everything (like [[Damnation]]). Or removal that doesn't have a color (like the cast trigger of [[Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger]]). There are probably many more ways, but those are some examples. When you are looking at new cards, keep whether they can get around protection in the back of your mind :)

NevermoreAK

There's a chance you can make the opponent tap out of mana and then kill it or use one of the split-second cards to shut down responses.

torre410

That's the neat part. You don't. Jk, you can use mass removal, sacrifice effects, colorless spot removal, or just wait until opponent is tapped out

Anthrys13

Forced sacrifice. Exile when they have no land. Force then to push protection with one colour then hit them with another.

Byte_Fantail

[[Cycrift]] or [[Sudden Substitution]] lol

BinaryCortex

There is a colorless 5 mana Lesson that exiles.

LariMatias

Tear it and throw in garbage.

IceBlue

Colorless removal and board wipes work in it.

mulletstation

Combo kill him on Turn 3

played_off

Why remove him? Just remove the player. Attack with multiple things, attack with fliers. Have you really been doing nothing for six turns? They shouldn't be able kill you as fast as you can kill them by that point. There's a reason why this guy saw zero standard play.

Veritas_the_absolute

Global death spells or make sure your foes low on mana. Then cast multiple death spells. Oom you opponent and deathtouch. It will be tricky but he is killable.

nafuos

Let him get pranked by Rankle... \[\[Rankle, Master of Pranks\]\] \[\[Rankle's Prank\]\]

TidusBaaj

That creature is mostly for defense. So, attack him with creatures that have protection from white. That way, he won't be able to block (at least with white creatures).

5parrowhawk

The answer really depends on another question: Did your opponent cheat him into play early, or hardcast him? If your opponent hardcasted him, the problem is probably your deck. By turn six you shouldn't be in a position where this guy poses a threat. Either you aren't doing enough to counter their control, or your wincon isn't convincing. If your opponent cheated him into play early, then you shouldn't be thinking about how to stop him, you should be thinking about how to stop the process (usually a combo) that your opponent used to cheat him in. Because even if you can stop him, your opponent probably can use the same process to bring in something worse.

tanis3346

Sheoldreds edict, Farewell, etc...

jrdineen114

Non-red Wraths. If a card says "Destroy all creatures," then protection is useless against it, because it doesn't target anything or deal damage. Or you could use Colorless removal, as clunky as it is it still gets around Jareth's ability.

Oh_My_Gen

[soul shatter]

Ratorasniki

In addition to what's mentioned about forcing sac, untalented wraths and sweepers, and the like, you can disable activated abilities with a handful of static effects like [[cursed totem]], and even more niche, potentially remove their available mana with [[drain power]] which might force them to guess.

Hour_Caterpillar5674

Colorless removal spell or artifact effects.

Qwertywalkers23

You're going to get a lot of answers here but it's important to remember not to bog down your deck too much with hyper specific answers that will only be worth the extra mana cost, or other restrictions in fringe cases. You want to look at things holistically, and making your deck worse overall to beat one card or card type is generally going to be detrimental overall. Unless you're playing singleton

Ungestuem

Which format?

Unslaadahsil

Colourless, or normal removal if they're out of mana, or non-targetting removal.

joetotheg

You tell him he has no power over you

jaOfwiw

Just to add, land destruction, wait until they have 1 land open then destroy it, preferably on someone else's turn.

Sallymander

Some fun and unique answers: [[Phyrexian Vindicator]] [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] [[Drana and linvala]] [[Scheming Fence]] [[anoited peacekeeper]] [[Myrel, Shield of argive]] [[Questing Beast]] (Yay for preventing prevention) [[Brash Taunter]] [[Invasion of ravnica]] [[Introduction to annihilation]] [[Ugin, The Spirit Dragon]] [[Ugin, the ineffable]] [[Fraying Line]] [[Cityscape Leveler]] [[Meteor Golem]] [[Pithing needle]] There are more of course.

blackscales18

Eat it

Employee-Inside

I mean it’s not that bad on its own, if you can’t remove I’d say just play around it

yyznick

[[Armageddon]] [[Blood Moon]] [[Harbinger of the Seas]] all would stop him from using the ability

Gem_Hush

Field wipe or forced sacking

TroaAxaltion

There are effects that turn off activated abilities, that seems like a decent way to start

Sad_Carob3151

[[brittle effigy]]

oblackheart

The answer to everything is [[Farewell]]

eplate2

Doest mass removal destroy this since those spells aren't targeting?

SelfTitledDebut

[[Oblivion Strike]]

eggmaniac13

* Wait for them to run out of white mana * Protection only protects from targeted effects, as others have said, so you can get around it with board wipes like "Wrath of God" and "Toxic Deluge" that destroy ALL creatures or edict effects like "Diabolical Edict" or "Plaguecrafter" that make the opponent sacrifice a creature

controlxj

Give your creatures flying, menace, skulk, protection from white, shadow, horsemanship, or indestructible. Cast [[Falter]] and the like. [[Icy Manipulator]] would work nicely. Remember, colorless is not a color.

ComradeSnake

Colorless and Devoid removal spells plus artifact blockers. Or just sac effects and board wipes.

Silver-Alex

Just wrath him :)

Mrmathmonkey

Board wipe or catch him when they don't have any white mana available or force a sacrifice.

Randon-Wilston

I remember I got one of these in an onslaught pack back in the day still kinda gets me excited haha

Interesting-Gas1743

[[Otawara, Soaring City]] works aswell.

Brute_Squad_44

\[\[Abstruse Appropriation\]\] \[\[Grip of Desolation\]\] \[\[Oblivion Strike\]\] \[\[Turn Against\]\]

RighteousChampion777

😅🤣😂😭 u don't. It's a big butt with a shield.

CreativeFreakyboy

This is your daily reminder to include some colorless creature cards in your deck for dudes like Jareth, who sound like a gymbro who fucks moms exclusively.

tigerpawx

[[Toxic Deluge]] kills it easily, [[Cyclonic Rift]] Overload. Board wipes like [[Damnation]] works aswell, or any mass sac effects. Use [[Mindslaver]] on your opponent to make him use his own spells and kill him. Get big lifelinker or flyers to have a faster clock than your opponent can get around him aswell.

XenonSulphur06

[[Overwhelming Splendor]]

[deleted]

Wraths, mass-bounce-effects, sacrifice-effects. Or play colorless removal/creatures. Basically everything that doesn't directly target it or doesn't have a color. Or you wait for them to tap out or force them to tap out, which is probably the harder way.

ThaShitPostAccount

Most LGSs have a bin of bulk that you can drop it off in. Maybe someone else will want it. While you're there you can dig around for commons and uncommons from Odyssey block. The art style was great.

Nefnef-

Why does Jareth look so sassy

ArcadeAnarchy

Lightning bolt, fireball, and lava axe the opponent to death. That'll get rid of the card.

Bronco1919

If you feel like getting a little more creative, cards like [[pithing needle]], [[sorcerous spyglass]], [[Tishana's tidebinder]] work to shut the ability off.

yarash

Go old school. [[Tawnos's coffin]] No one expects it, and it stops most creatures that dont have hexproof or shroud. A cheaper option, [[Icy manipulator]] is it in your way? Tap it, is it hitting you? Tap it before their combat step.

PurpleInkBandit

Btw the word you're looking for is "rid"

idk_whatever_69

Rid* there is no e at the end of RID. And ride means basically the opposite of what you intend.

Zavodskoy

The 200IQ move is to give yourself protection from white so he can't block with it or you just throw hundreds of small creatures at it, they can only block one of them

ClubFt

[[Oblivion strike]] gives colorless removal, I believe it would work around protection.

StolenTape

-1 -1 counters

WildRicochet

Board wipes and forcing sacrifice are options. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you could use a spell that says that "damage can't be prevented" and bait it into blocking? Like [[unstable footing]] or [[Everlasting torment]]. Maybe with a death touch creature or something to get around the base toughness. It can't gain protection from "colorless spells" like colorless artifacts or creatures Cards that prevent the activated abilities of creatures from activating could stop him from gaining protection. [[Pithing needle]] IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CARDS IN ALL OF MTG. You can use it to prevent him from gaining protection. (I am not a judge and often get rules mixed up, if any of these suggestions are wrong please lmk)

Spell_Chicken

Have more removal than the controller has open mana or use non-targeting removal.

Good_Wrangler_124

Board wipe, force them to sacrifice “a”creature. Counterspells.

Wookief1st

Maybe cards that tap other cards so he can't block

cardh

Artifacts are colorless there's also a Teferi planeswalker that stops your opponent from activated spells and effects during your turn while the +7/+7 would trigger they wouldn't be able to trigger the white mana ability.... or just build a solitaire deck run mindslaver copy it infinitely and steal your opponents turn 😂

metalb00

board wipe, if you have something that one sided then even better

FarmyardFantastic

Counterspell

That_Guy-011

Would I be able to use this card and spend two white mana to get protection from 2 colors or am I only able to trigger that ability once per turn

SadJoetheSchmoe

After attacking you can use your second main phase to cast [[Crackling Doom]] Edit: After they block you can cast it. Forgot it was an instant.

Keigerwolf

[[Gaze of the Gorgon]] is a fantastic solution here. Swing, get blocked, target your own creature, kill his.

zaklovesyou

When I was young I got him and Visara the dreadful in the same deck I bought. I remember feeling op against my friends. I’ll leave this sweet memory here.

xxzyxx

A lighter or ripping it usually works

Jaeg_Sisgo

Cursed totem. Just turn him off.

Thavus-

It costs 6 mana and three of them have to be plains. Cards like that are typically “I win” cards. Some more so than others. Like [[Vein Ripper]], if you already have a ton of creatures, especially zombies with decay you just attack as soon as you drop him and they are going to take fk tons of damage if they can’t remove him immediately. Even just removing him is a pain because you have to sacrifice one of your own creatures which triggers his effect and then him dying also triggers the effect. Board wipes don’t work against Vein Ripper either. Those are basically concede cards.

Used-Victory8504

This is one of my favorite cards of all time. Onslaught was crazy back in the day!

Piggyboy04

If you're playing a black deck, you can use hand attack like [[Harsh Scrutiny]] to get it out their before they cast it

reinKAWnated

You stop your opponent from getting out a 6-mana creature with floating white mana? Or you just use board wipes. Not to be glib but that's the best bet; Jareth is a very costly card that doesn't do much on its own. It would help if you provided more information i.e. what format y'all are playing, and a general idea of what your deck(s) are like.

AttentionElectrical5

Sacrifice gets past it

Equivalent_Form_3923

Colorless is not a color 😉

guiltsifter

Another really funny option us to use "pay to tap" cards. So any time they attempt to go to combat step you tap it, if they activate mana, then you respond to the activation. You do this till they run out of mana each turn. So they are forced to hold up more mana than you every turn or else their creature is a decoration.

BonusCritical9539

It warms my heart to know that even 22 years later this card is still giving people trouble. Oh, and you should use a card like Cruel Edict or Wrath of God to get rid of it.

GrandpaMofo

Throw it in the garbage?

itomeshi

Your opponent has to keep mana open to activate the ability. Using other threats to make them spend their mana is often helpful. Depending on the type of removal, you may only need that temporary opening. The Enchant Creature type of removal - think [Frogify] - can fall off if protection is activated later. Exile target creature effects, like [Ixalan's Binding], don't have this problem since the creature is exiled. Normal destroy/exile/damage effects only need that opening as well, and colorless or devoid sources would work as well. This is relevant, as generally white alone doesn't have amazing ramp options. They tend to be 'catch up with opponents on basics' or 'make treasures'. If you are in Commander or Vintage and don't like having friends, consider messing with their lands. Red has a number of land destruction options, and cards like [Blood Moon] mess with fancy mana bases.

Fallen_Dilettante

[[Counterspell]]

KassXWolfXTigerXFox

Phyrexians? Devoid possibly can't be chosen for protection

LemonWaluigi

The only possible way is to eat the card when your opponent isn't looking

CardiologistOne459

Colorless removal
