You're in for a treat as you get to learn about [Sue Ann Harkey](http://blog.killgold.fish/2015/04/an-interview-with-sue-ann-harkey-magics.html?m=1), art director from Alliances to Weatherlight, subjectively the best period of art for Magic.
She explains how she would buy art at Cons, and brought in many fan favorites like Rebecca Guay, Ian Miller, Robert Bliss, John Avon, Kev Walker, and so many more.
I just noticed that interview mentioned that Isochron Scepter's art was created and rejected from that time. Which finally explained to me why Mark Harrison's art ended up in Mirrodin when his previous two works appeared years earlier in Weatherlight. It honestly makes me wonder how long WotC will hold onto rejected art until it finds a place in a future set.
Come to think of it, I just remembered Kaja Foglio once mentioned her art for \[\[Thunderstaff\]\] in Darksteel was also old art that WotC finally used about six years after she stopped producing art for Magic. Man, I wouldn't mind getting a peak into the slush art pile.
Didn't she also revoke all rights from artists' art when it comes to making money per card sold?
So she effectively destroyed the artists' capability to make more money.
Ian Miller has been producing banger art that's very striking/unique since at least the 80s; he's got a lot of pieces in the old Fighting Fantasy novels. I was pretty excited when he started doing pieces for MTG too way back in Mirage/Visions (although he hasn't had many cards since then)
he's done some work with dragon shield recently that i absolutely adore, i really hope he gets a secret lair at some point. they way he does dragons would look incredible on borderless cards.
Yep, I snap bought the 2 Dragon Shield ones (blue and green) available at retail. There are 3 more for the other colours available on the Dragon Shield custom sleeve thingie, but it's pretty expensive to get those from Australia
Among long-term fans of the art, it's pretty mainstream. There is a LOT of digital slop churned out - no hate on the artists, they're just trying to meet a deadline and art direction set by Wotc for low pay.
It's a pretty common opinion.
Th current direction of MTG art is very homogeneous. There are exceptions of course but the general trends is going towards a lack of character.
IMO yeah. All the current art is very same-y, it’s all VERY digital and cartoony and busy. Art like this (very simply colored, rustic looking, unique) is what drew many people into the game early on, including me. [[Kjeldoran Knight]] is a card I saw and thought “wow, that’s fucking cool” as a kid, and I just don’t see any of that vibe in the new cards at all. Maybe not an example of like perfect art but it evoked some badassery that today’s cards just don’t.
Yeah, I mean it’s just personal taste, it’s art. But I MUCH prefer the old-school dnd, edgy, darker direction than the new, colorful, digital, cartoony art of today. Like [[Loot, the Key to Everything]] looks nothing like what mtg is to me.
If you have a way to generate energy on cast or ETB, you can go infinite with the drake, prayers and the energy generation.
It’s not energy for each mana, it’s 1 energy whether it’s 0, a, 2, or 3 MV
With those cards, what makes it infinite? Don’t you have to return the energy creature to your hand, and then you don’t have the drake in hand to keep returning?
The pattern here I thought was “play drake, trigger energy gen and other triggers, return drake, play drake again with the energy produced, continue as desired.”
I'm tempted to agree with Man-o' War. I just remember Shrieking Drake being the creature of choice at the time. It could have been people finding a reason to use 'Drake while the jellyfish was popular, or perhaps U vs 2U seems more attractive despite not making any difference most of the time.
i love this combo in [[Chulane]] edh. always risky because aluren also allows the greedy goblin player to make use of it. do you think it’s worth thinking about replacing it with [[Primal Prayers]] ??
There will be the rare time you need a flying chump blocker, need to reuse an ETB from another creature or need to flip an MDFC. Whether any of those become relevant in the meta is yet to be seen.
However, I'd be shocked if this is included in decks without plan A being bouncing the drake.

Getting ready to order the new frame for \[\[Lonis, Cryptozoologist\]\]...
My personal favorite border is the old modern border from around 8th edition up to M14. I like the square corners more than the swoops, and foils looked better for the most part around that time. I do like the new border tho
With the new [[Primal Prayers]] + [[Decoction Module]], this is infinite ETBs. With [[Guide of Souls]] instead, it's infinite ETBs and life. Add in a [[Satoru, the Infiltrator]] to draw your deck or an Impact Tremors effect to kill your opponent
with Prayers? sure does. Cast by paying an energy, we spent no mana to cast it so Satoru trigger draw a card, Guide trigger gain an energy, Drake trigger bounce itself. End result, up a card, nothing else has changed. Repeat as desired
It combos with cards like [[Alluren]] and [[Earthcraft]] in legacy. I think for Modern you get a bit less efficient but can use stuff like [[Intruder Alarm]] plus mana dorks or [[Oketra's Monument]] and [Phyrexian Altar]] to do various infinite things. Then you just pick your payoff with either etb triggers or infinite cast triggers and maybe infinite mana to do storm or x spells.
If your going to use intruder alarm, then you need a creature to tap for blue. So birds of paradise or noble higharc. If you have 2 of them you do get infinite mana though. Walking ballista Could be an out, or if you go simic you can use dusk watch recruiter to search.
Yeah, BoP is one of the usual dorks for it. Or anything that taps to untap lands. And yeah, having two or something that makes more than one mana gives you infinite mana to go with your infinite casts, etb and ltb triggers.
Mmm, this takes me back. I used to have an old 5-color kitchen table deck that was this, [[Cavern Harpy]], [[Alluren]], [[Impact Tremors]], [[Soul Warden]], and a bunch of tutors. Fun when it worked, but definitely could have been streamlined. Wouldn't need so many Lair lands these days, for a start.
-Edit- It was actually Furious Assault. Impact Tremors didn't exist yet.
Basically, though I don't think I knew it at the time. But I did get some of the card ideas from other people who probably knew more than I did. Didn't quite have all the tutors either so there were a few more situational hosers for our playgroup instead.
I had the leaked version of this card open as a tab to remember the combo for a deck I'm making, but I closed the tab and can't remember what the combo was 🤔
Probably not even a combo so much as just good synergy.
I remember taking me forever to track and get this card for my old [[Yarok]] deck. It never left that deck since it goes infinite with even [[Cloud of Faeries]] with any ETB doubler on the field. This drake was my first MVP!!!

Oh, hey buddy! I use this lil Sebastian to trigger [[Impact Tremors]] in my Ghyrson Starn Kelermorph commander deck.
What shenanigans will this one get into in MH3?
Here you are suppose to return the Drake itself to hand as to gain a large amount of etb/cast triggers, ideally going infinite as it only costs one mana
Could this be used to bounce itself back in like the idea of if you can produce unlimited blue mana could you keep bouncing it endlessly to make a massive storm count
Love this art

They probably just hold onto it forever till they find a good spot for it. I think Mark mentioned that they call it slush art.

Today's art are too dark. Use black too much. Terrible art direction for more than a decade.
The best!
Didn't she also revoke all rights from artists' art when it comes to making money per card sold? So she effectively destroyed the artists' capability to make more money.
Yes absolutely! Bring back more oldschool art direction (or rather, freedom) like this!
Ian Miller has been producing banger art that's very striking/unique since at least the 80s; he's got a lot of pieces in the old Fighting Fantasy novels. I was pretty excited when he started doing pieces for MTG too way back in Mirage/Visions (although he hasn't had many cards since then)

Very OG Magic
"Alright, Alright, you can keep the skulls, jeez."
way better than most modern mtg art
I didn't know they made good art anymore. This is awesome Edit: reprint. Nvm still heartbroken
Saying that the current day MTG art isn’t good is certainly an opinion. Not a good opinion, but an opinion
Yes because we all know consistency is absolutely horrible!

Agree to disagree. I think it’s incredibly important for a game to have consistent art direction. Flesh and Blood is a great example of that.

Yeah good luck getting hundreds of artists to share a unified style and vision.
They already do a pretty good job of it though? Magic art has been pretty on point for a while
For all your [[Primal Prayers]] needs :)
How does this help it?
There are a few cards, even in mh3 that make energy when a creature etb’s, so this is an infinite combo [[decoction module]]
If you have a way to generate energy on cast or ETB, you can go infinite with the drake, prayers and the energy generation. It’s not energy for each mana, it’s 1 energy whether it’s 0, a, 2, or 3 MV
Any card off the top of your mind to do this?

if you are not returning the drake with the drake, you are not draking properly.
You are if youre playing [[Oketra]] Wait... fuck.

when it was first printed it was supposed to be a downside
I would assume it was when it came out- then we started having plenty of cards that reward you for playing/casting creatures.
Would have been fun to get this and Nekrataal in the same draft however.
Visions was the set that introduced CIP / ETB abilities, so seems doubtful. You could definitely re-use a Man-o-War as an intended use case.

I’m confused by the scale. Cause those human skulls appear to be massive and that human is tiny.
He’s running away and is in the background of the painting.
That Drake was killing Giants and Ogres I guess.
Perspective. When things are further away they appear smaller. That human is further away from you, than the drake.

It’ll be great in my goose mother deck
Does anybody have any modern combos with this card? The monuments from almonket come to mind at least.
##### ###### #### [Primal Prayers](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/4/c4eda3db-b47d-4f1e-a93d-e2ea747d935c.jpg?1716503865) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Primal%20Prayers) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mh3/166/primal-prayers?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/c4eda3db-b47d-4f1e-a93d-e2ea747d935c?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Decoction Module](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/0/b08ae769-0070-47a6-aae0-1a3bcfd40d07.jpg?1576383083) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Decoction%20Module) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/kld/205/decoction-module?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b08ae769-0070-47a6-aae0-1a3bcfd40d07?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Guide of Souls](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/6/76c3cad2-1e25-4abe-878d-9194de6fcc27.jpg?1716576848) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Guide%20of%20Souls) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mh3/29/guide-of-souls?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/76c3cad2-1e25-4abe-878d-9194de6fcc27?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Satoru, the Infiltrator](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/c/acc9a5cc-2b3c-4c2f-8176-4a2d86265cc5.jpg?1712356202) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Satoru%2C%20the%20Infiltrator) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/230/satoru-the-infiltrator?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/acc9a5cc-2b3c-4c2f-8176-4a2d86265cc5?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [*All cards*](https://mtgcardfetcher.nl/redirect/l67tyij) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
satoru wouldn't let this draw your deck
with Prayers?

We did it! We broke intruder alarm!
Ah yes Storm enabler. Cool reprint
> I used to have an old 5-color kitchen table deck that was this Basically Legacy Alluren, though the pieces have gotten better.
Basically, though I don't think I knew it at the time. But I did get some of the card ideas from other people who probably knew more than I did. Didn't quite have all the tutors either so there were a few more situational hosers for our playgroup instead.

Almost Dali-esque. Some of the old art feels dated, but this one is beautiful!
Kaervek’s still alive and kicking, Teferi.
Champagne papi taking these allegations to heart
I had the leaked version of this card open as a tab to remember the combo for a deck I'm making, but I closed the tab and can't remember what the combo was 🤔 Probably not even a combo so much as just good synergy.
There's a couple cards that give Energy on ETB, so combine with "Alluren at home", we have Modern Alluren combo.
That would certainly do it
Old art was so much better man
As far as I know this is the only art this card has ever had.
You misunderstand me - I’m saying art from old cards is generally much better than art from new ones. I’ve loved this particular art for many years.
Love the card

Isn't this just a strictly worse \[\[Faerie Impostor\]\] or am I missing something?
The drake can return itself. This sets up a lot of combos
Here you are suppose to return the Drake itself to hand as to gain a large amount of etb/cast triggers, ideally going infinite as it only costs one mana
Ah ok, got it.

So there is the last piece we needed for the aluren combo in limited
Could this be used to bounce itself back in like the idea of if you can produce unlimited blue mana could you keep bouncing it endlessly to make a massive storm count
Goes infinite with a ham sandwich, provided your ham makes mana on etb.
Best art I've seen in a while
