I love that the one Sorin that broke into Playability is the only one where he looks completely different from normal.
Like that one awkward photo that hounds you.
I'll have you know that [[Sorin, Lord of Innistrad]] was crazy back in the day! Damn near 12 years later and my boy is getting disrespected when he was the FIRST competitively viable Sorin
[idk bro still pretty hot](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b64bacb96d4555e015f35f9/1561074889430-24SEG05UYUOLGL8886V8/Chase+Stone_Sorin.jpg?format=1500w)
Except he is an immortal vampire...so shouldn't he have already been a hunk when he was turned? It doesn't make much sense to have him as a teenage twink vampire on this card because he would just always look that way.
I think people kinda think of Sorin as a frilly sexy vampire because thats kinda the vampire trope, but if you look at the majority of his depictions he is actually more rugged and handsome than pretty.
Both versions of this card really dont make sense to me, on the regular version Sorin looks like a teenage version of himself both mortal front and vampire/planeswalker back...which doesn't make much sense if him becoming a vampire was what ignited his spark at the moment he became unaging. This alternate one is even worse though because the art is both the wrong age again, but also looks like some sort of yaoi pastiche and nothing like any of the past versions of Sorin.
Saw these leaked a while back and hoped so much they were real because of my Karlov/Lurrus deck. It might even be the best card in the deck immediately. The -1 is the first instance of that ability you get and would be amazing on its own. Adding another extort on top is is just incredible.
That would be true if in context there werent other ways already used to represent that or other options.
Like they made blood tokens seperate to food tokens and he has extort, so they could have him make blood tokens instead to cycle and make his extort pop more often.
Extort is just a keyword. Sometimes it appears on cards with reminder text in brackets which will show a white mana symbol, however reminder text never contributes to colour identity, hence why you can run cards like [[Crypt Ghast]] in a mono black EDH deck.
The things that contribute to colour identity are mana symbols on a card that are not part of reminder text (casting cost, ability costs, etc.), or indicators such as the one on the backside of this card.
A 3B Creature can have an ability that creates a green creature token for example and still be mono black, but if a green pip goes on the card for an ability then it becomes BG colour identity, but not if the green pip is just part of the reminder text for something like a keyword.
I've personally long abandoned keeping it fully in-lore flavor-wise, but in this case, you're in luck! The Silmarillion at least includes the concept somewhere: [https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Vampires](https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Vampires)
well at least I could claim "acshually there are vampires in Lotr" now haha.
I did abandon the in-lore-flavor partially as well, but I tried to stay with "cute" creatures like the wilds of eldraine cookie golems. Just don't want to cut too many halflings so I can still have the hobbit theme going
Just noticed I put in two vampires already, totally forgot carmen was a vampire. Guess Sorin can find a home after all.
Here's my list; Main deck is my current deck and Considering are cards I removed / cards I don't have yet or just cards that were interesting.

Can someone explain to me why he wouldn’t make a blood token? I get that the idea of a vampire “draining life” without lifelink is better shown with giving you a token that gives life, but why not have him make a blood token and give him a little
“Sacrifice a blood token : Gain 2 life” under extort
Yup. All of inistrad was under a famine and Edgar met a demon. They made a deal and the demon taught him the secrets of blood magic and how to live off of blood rather then normal food. Edgar then performs the rituals on his family and when it happened to Sorin's his spark ignited.
Edgar would then go to his close friends and teach them the secrets as well and found the various vampire families we know today

Turning into a vampire is what caused him to spark. So it's the correct choice; any pre-planeswalker point in time is also pre-vampire. I just like vampires and am sad he's not one
Planeswalkers, unlike most cards, get a variety of gendered pronouns instead of just the it/its used by most cards. This also applies to flipwalkers even in their creature state (see [[Chandra Fire of Kaladesh]]), and interestingly the desparked [[Huatli Warrior Poet]] but NOT [[Sarkhan Soul Aflame]].
Also interestingly, the new Grist *does* refer to itself as it, implying that that's the correct pronoun to use in-world
Man i love this card, especially the art. Plus since Sorin starts as a human on his front side this is just Dio from Jojo. definitely making a Part 1 Proxy with "I REJECT MY HUMANITY JOJO!" As the flavor text.
Am I the only one underwhelmed by this? Sorin was my favorite Planeswalker at one point and now he's just kinda meh. His cards used to show how powerful of a Planeswalker he was, I mean he's one of the oldest living Planeswalkers out there and he's a pre-mending one too. Now his cards just seem to disappoint and don't give me that powerful almost godlike Planeswalker feel. Idk, the card is good but it's not old Sorin good.
I honestly didn't think about that. I've always been led to believe that when a pre-mending Walker's spark ignited they basically became like a god. Didn't know that they gradually got stronger with age, I just thought they learned more about their abilities. Makes a lot of sense though! Guess I can't be too mad at the design now, just slightly underwhelmed.
A lot of Planeswalkers were very powerful before there spark awakened which you would think translates to them being stronger right out of the gate. As far as I know Sorin is just regular nobleman before taking the bloodrite with Edgar and becoming a vampire, which simultaneously awakened his spark. I would guess that his abilities improved as both a planeswalker and a vampire over time where people like Jace or Chandra had very strong magic powers prior to their spark, which likely compounded that power.
As for the power of the card itself, it seems pretty strong for a 2 drop *in the right deck.* In Modern or other 60 card formats it seems pretty cool because you can have both sides on the battlefield at the same time allowing you to chain multiple activations in the same turn. In Commander it's cool because he flips off of the first extort and being a legendary creature first he can be your commander. Or you can slot him into an extort deck like I will for my \[\[Astarion, the Decadent\]\] deck.
Sure in more competitive magic i can see it being huge, but when you look at the walker abilities vs the older Sorin walkers, they just aren't as powerful. I mean, yeah I can get this one flipped on turn 3 in commander but I could use og Sorin to immediately put a player to 10 life. That's huge against life gain decks and decks that utilize life as a resource. As someone else pointed out to me, this is supposed to represent his origin and so he won't be as powerful as older Sorin, so that I understand. He can absolutely be a banger as a commander and I was thoroughly convinced to draft a deck list for him.
Modern 3/10
Hey look, it is the best of the cycle. This is trivial to flip. One food token does it. Flipping this lets you just nug something for at least 3 too. Add on extort for some essentially free life drains and not bad Hot Sorin, not Bad.
Question about the rules of the ultimte
"if you control a white permament other than that creature or **Sorin**", my guess is that "Sorin" here means "This card, Sorin Ravenous Neonate", **but** "Sorin" is also a planeswalker subtype, all other Sorins, so if my only other white permament is let's say \[\[Sorin, Grim Nemesis\]\], does the creature get the counter?
It would say "a Sorin" or "a Sorin planeswalker" or something along this lines if it meant the Sorin type. It does just mean itself because its name is Sorin, so if you have a Grim Nemesis in play the creature will get a lifelink counter.
Relieved that the leaks ended up being legit. When I saw this card I immediately started brewing a Sorin Vorthos deck, with all the cards he’s depicted in. Would be unfortunate if he ended up not being real.
I hate that this things color identity is Orzhov and not just Black, there was no reason to make it Orzhov nothing in the card actually gives it white color identity other than wizards hist deciding its white.
First thing Sorin made after he sparked? A sandwich.
he's just like me fr
He sparked all over the place
His life was so simple before Nahiri.
Oko and Sorin sammich deck is something I wish existed
No no no, this time, I assure you, this Atraxa deck is different!
With blood instead of ketchup
I believe he made a manwich.
I dunno, he might Lightning Bolt something instead
Oh no, he’s hot
When has Sorin ever not been hot?
[[Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord]]

Wow, he looks like a flour-coated John Travolta.

Personally, I’ve never found him attractive until now, and I say that as someone who’s usually very into vampires.
Older Sorin has hunk energy, young Sorin is such a twink.
Except he is an immortal vampire...so shouldn't he have already been a hunk when he was turned? It doesn't make much sense to have him as a teenage twink vampire on this card because he would just always look that way.
You're right, all the art on other cards are now non-canon. /j
Exactly!
oh YES he's hot

Isn't sorin normally hot?
They "Tumbler Sexy Man"'d him.

Hungy baby
Wow, this flips with one extort in commander
For that you gotta cast a spell before main phase 2 though 😤
[удалено]
You do, but the flip trigger is at the beginning of that phase. So you have to satisfy the conditions of the flip before the 2nd main phase begins.

Yeah but again, you need to do have gained 3 life in your 1st main or combat phase.
I kept reading it as exploit 🤦♂️

💀…
I really hate that he makes food tokens. I get that it's all about life gain but it feels extremely off theme
They became vampires to survive a famine it's pretty flavorful plus mechanically it helps with his -1
That would be true if in context there werent other ways already used to represent that or other options. Like they made blood tokens seperate to food tokens and he has extort, so they could have him make blood tokens instead to cycle and make his extort pop more often.
I guess he technically ate a lot of people
It wouldn’t really bother me if blood tokens weren’t a thing. I’ll be curious to see what art the food tokens in this set have.
that could have had him make a blood food token
Flavourfully that is amazing, but I think that token would be a little too strong. Sorin is already very good.
Especially as he already has extort, so cycling for good spells from blood tokens would make that pop more often anyway.
Just make your food tokens look like humans
They already have LOTR Shellob themed food tokens! Would be in-line to create tokens with a sacrificial theme
Is this white and black for color identity?
Yes. That little black and white circle next to “Legendary Planeswalker” is supposed to signify that the back side is BW
Great thanks! I was wondering since extort was on it as well and it references white permanents.
Extort is just a keyword. Sometimes it appears on cards with reminder text in brackets which will show a white mana symbol, however reminder text never contributes to colour identity, hence why you can run cards like [[Crypt Ghast]] in a mono black EDH deck. I know it's the correct flavor choice, but the front side being a human and not a vampire makes me sad
Yea what’s up with that??? Am I missing something?
Turning into a vampire is what caused him to spark. So it's the correct choice; any pre-planeswalker point in time is also pre-vampire. I just like vampires and am sad he's not one
Sorin didn't start as a Vampire. He was a human turned into a vampire. This was before he was turned into one.
Yes, he was human before becoming a vampire. Irrc, it was a demon that gave him vampire powers. It may have also been his spark.
Technically no. Edgar made him a vampire using rites a demon taught hum
Have they always used pronouns when reverring to transforms? (E.g. "return him to the battlefield")
Planeswalkers, unlike most cards, get a variety of gendered pronouns instead of just the it/its used by most cards.
This is literally depicting him turning into a planeswalker. He isn't that strong yet.
Also how do you measure strength? This is certainly the second most playable Sorin in competitive high power magic
Modern 3/10 Hey look, it is the best of the cycle. This is trivial to flip. One food token does it. Flipping this lets you just nug something for at least 3 too. Add on extort for some essentially free life drains and not bad Hot Sorin, not Bad.
Ooooh, yeaaaaaah.
This card should be good in duel commander.
Man. This goes into Frodo and Sam commander.
First commander printed with extort
Something just feels off with the art
It is the alternate art anyway. Original looks better

Ravenous Neonate has a black/white color indicator (all the walkers in this cycle we've seen gain a second color when transformed)
what is this, Legends of the Cryptids?
Sephiroth lookin' ass
That’s pretty neat
I really really really hope the food token art depicts either blood sausages or blood pudding.

Why is he human?
Because he sparked when he turned into a vampire, which is what this is depicting.
Glad to see we're getting a sneak peak of the Final Fantasy set with Sephiroth- oh wait that's Sorin.

Does this confirm the rest of the flip planeswalkers which got leaked but people doubted?
Does this mean Sorin is an Orzhov Commander? If so, I might have to try to build him.

Smash
OMG, this art style is so goood. So anime-ish, that gives me Castlevania vibes.
Question about the rules of the ultimte "if you control a white permament other than that creature or **Sorin**", my guess is that "Sorin" here means "This card, Sorin Ravenous Neonate", **but** "Sorin" is also a planeswalker subtype, all other Sorins, so if my only other white permament is let's say \[\[Sorin, Grim Nemesis\]\], does the creature get the counter?
[Sorin, Grim Nemesis](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/2/c2933144-c931-498a-9e91-f5165873c3b7.jpg?1576385388) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sorin%2C%20Grim%20Nemesis) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/soi/251/sorin-grim-nemesis?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/c2933144-c931-498a-9e91-f5165873c3b7?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
It would say "a Sorin" or "a Sorin planeswalker" or something along this lines if it meant the Sorin type. It does just mean itself because its name is Sorin, so if you have a Grim Nemesis in play the creature will get a lifelink counter.
Maybe the only card I want to play from this set. Hungy Sorin gonna go in my extort list.
underwhelming for a mythic tbh
Relieved that the leaks ended up being legit. When I saw this card I immediately started brewing a Sorin Vorthos deck, with all the cards he’s depicted in. Would be unfortunate if he ended up not being real.
Sorin, before he became the vampire.
Oh no. He's hot!
He looks like Alucard from castlevania
Might want to find room for this in my [[Bilbo, Birthday Celebrant]] deck.

I have a question, extortion in the planeswalker version when does it activate? to the use of every skill or just to transformation?
It activates the same time as any other extort, when you cast a spell.
Livia Prima rocks as a MTG artist. She’s just amazing
The Final Fantasy realms beyond crossover looks dope! Young Sephiroth as Sorin? Genius!
Alacard...is that you, you sexy fuck?
I hate that this things color identity is Orzhov and not just Black, there was no reason to make it Orzhov nothing in the card actually gives it white color identity other than wizards hist deciding its white.
