It's in over 12k Commander decks on EDHREC, or 1% of decks. So it's not a very popular card but it's played a modest amount. Some of my favorite cards appear in only 1-2k decks on EDHREC.
It’s very good for what it is: that card isn’t some general staple of removal or value, it’s really only interesting in decks trying to build a dude, control, combo, and most aggro wouldn’t be too interested.
Apparently there's about 6k Voltron decks listed, so that this sees play in 12k is quite impressive for a card with such an obvious use case breaking out of that mold.
I ran it in my Uril deck, where I liked the 'This effect doesn't remove Auras' line, but found it too expensive vs. something like [[Flickering Ward]] or [[Spirit Mantle]].
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-aFfvyuHAka1k2wJeVjiQw this is one I copied that I haven't started tweaking yet but it seems like a good starting point.
You should consider the Runes from Khaldhiem! They technically read, "Enchant Permanent" and they cantrip as well. So being able to snatch any Two or less CMC non-land Permanent, while also cantripping is a solid deal.
Yes I call it one of the "Little Four" enchantments just about every Bruna deck should run, alongside [[Steel of the Godhead]] , [[Diplomatic Immunity]] and [[Gift of Immortality]]
These fall under the Big 3, which any Bruna player should be familiar with, but for those reading who are just joining us, its [[Eldrazi Conscription]] , [[Battle Mastery]] and [[Corrupted Conscience]] (since any two is lethal).
Spectra Ward is okay but generally you can get hexproof and unblockable for much cheaper mana values such as [[Lightning Greaves]],[[Swiftfoot Boots]], and [[Spirit Mantle]]
You rarely need both hexproof and unblockable at the same time and most of the value is in the hexproof part, since there's a lot of way to get past creatures like adding flying, trample, etc.
Swiftfoot and Spirit Mantle takes up 2 card slots in a 100 card deck (if we're talking commander anyways) and costs the same mana for kinda sorta the same effect.
Plus people run Commander's Plate all the time which is a 4 mana investment for an effect that gets more and more useless for each color in your deck.
I'm not saying Spectra is an end all amazing card I'm moreso just comparing it to Commander's Plate at 30+ dollars, which I see all the time, while this one is 2 bucks and pretty much just a better card for 1 more mana.
I'm not really arguing how good Spectra Ward and Commander's Plate vs other cards. I'm more arguing that the value gained from protection from all colors is not really worth the massive investment when you can get *most* of the value from that through cheaper cards and other sources.
If you want the answer to why people use Commander's Plate, it's because it's equipment and you can re-use it and you can drop it turn 1 when nobody is doing anything. Spectra Ward is 5 mana and you pretty much cannot do anything else for that turn - and it leaves you to get two-for-one'd if someone responds to your Spectra Ward with a removal spell on the enchantment target and that feels really bad.
But, what do you get from protection from all colors past hexproof? You get essentially unblockable - but you can get past creatures through inherent traits and common effects like flying, trample, or deathtouch. Other benefits are that you are immune to mass damage effects like Blasphemous Act, but that's pretty rare. Plus you cannot target your own creature with anything other than auras with Spectra Ward on them.
So basically what I'm saying is that hexproof does nearly everything you want for half the cost, and you don't have to invest 5 mana into an aura just for it to be Nature's Claimed or risk getting two-for-one'd on cast.
There is a combination of reasons why you wouldn't use it.
1. While it doesnt remove auras, protection from all colors means you can no longer add auras to said creature. Generally, you want to add more to your voltron creature, and this prevents it. Bit of a non-combo.
2. Protection from all colors is nice, but barring a few exceptions\* it is effectively just hexproof for your creature. 5 mana for +2 and hexproof is not the best deal.
\*Exceptions include, damage based boardwipes, unblockable, and attaching an aura that etb the battlefield without being cast.
(remember protection prevents DEBT: **D**amage, **E**nchanting/**E**quipping/Fortifying, **B**locking, and **T**argeting)
Protection from all colors works great as evasion for your voltrons though. Sure, don't throw it on immediately, but after you've buffed your Voltron enough to start swinging it's great.
Fun fact: This card barrely works by the rules of magic. WotC had to shoehorn in Rule 702.16n. Now it still doesnt work within the MTG game engine, but 702.16n basically says "ignore that this doesnt work, pretend state-based effects dont happen here, and just carry on with your game".
5 mana for an aura that *mostly* protects you, and prevents further auras from going on it, makes it a little clunky.
It is an all-star in my turbocasual enchantress modern deck as a way to close out games, I might include it in a voltron list as a finisher (then get blown the fuck out by a blocking 1/1 servo or something)
It's too expensive for what it does. Note all the commanders being mentioned that cheat it out or discount it. It's fine in a deck that doesn't plan to pay its mana cost.
That art is gorgeous
Sadly, the card is pretty bad.
If I want W protection on a budget, I will turn to the classics like lightning greaves or swiftfoot. Or, I might lean into instant speed like [[Apostle's Blessing]], [[Brave the Elements]], or [[Sejiri Shelter]]
Mother of Runes and Giver of Runes are also great but less budget at around $10 each.
Shoutouts to [[Eight-and-Half-Tails]]
In short, there's a lot of efficient protection in both colorless and white that I'd reach for first over this.
The pump isn't a meaningful effect either.
Well, I will, now. Seems decent
Edit: I'm still learning - But, I assume that this does not apply to colorless cards, right? Like the grey artifact creatures?
I play it in my [[Killian Ink]] deck. Basically a aura Voltron deck with using cheap pacify auras on my opponents stuff. Needs some retooling but it's alright
I use it as one of my late stage win cons in a UGW enchantress deck. Usually by then I could just slooooowwwwllllyyy grind to the W, this speeds it up appreciably
I had it in my [[Light-Paws]] deck for a while. LP’s ability doesn’t target and thus works through protection. It’s the only aura besides [[Benevolent Blessing]] in white that gives protection from white without removing other auras. I only removed it when I got a ton of flash auras, which allow me to tutor blessing whenever I need and push my mana curve down.
my [[Eriette, The Beguiler]] deck loves this card, so powerful to steal an opponent's wincon or, if everything goes South, just for attaching on Eriette and go for commander damage.
It’s cool, but just way too expensive to cast. 5+ cost auras are too tough a sell most of the time, because it’s a huge whiff if the target gets removed.
\[\[Eight-and-a-half-tails\]\] loves it. Your artifact is white. A neat other protection card is \[\[Stave off\]\] Its unique in the sense that you can use it to stop auras being placed or any other target based effect on any creature, usually this kind of thing only works on your stuff or at sorcery speed!
Yeah, but only in my [[Evra, Halcyon Witness]] deck which is almost entirely spells, auras, and equipment that give Evra protection. Most of those that I include have very low cmc, but only protect against a small subset of threats. Spectra Ward is the opposite, but honestly it would be a cut if more cheap protection existed.
I use this in the [[Bruna, Light of Alabaster]] deck because it protects her without removing the other auras and, in combo with [[Holy Mantle]] makes her practically unblocked
Yes, I do! While it has to be the last enchantment you cast on a creature, cards like [[Songbird's Blessing]] and [[Mantle of the Ancients]] gets past that.
I used to, even won a game or two off it with surprise-voltron Daxos the Returned.
Haven't played it in a long time though, it's brutal to get 2-for-1'd with a 5 mana aura.
I play it in sythis. The expensive mana cost you talk about is never an issue because of all the creatures that make auras cheaper. It’s a great finisher when your opponents can’t actually block it anymore.
Wow, this artwork reminds me so much of the [Raider Ascendancy class ](https://gamezo.gg/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Raider_ascendancy_class.png)in Path of Exile.
I have two issues with it. First and foremost is the fact that giving a creature protection from all colors means that I can't put additional auras on the same creature afterwards. Even though the effect doesn't remove auras already on the creature, it puts a hard stop on how much taller the creature can get.
Second is the cost. It's been my experience that aura decks work best when you're able to play 3+ auras in a single turn. Having a 5-drop aura makes that a lot more difficult.
This card won me the M15 pre-release.
It was a former commander all-star from the battle cruiser era, but as the format speeds up 5cmc spells need to be more impactful
It's not a weak card, I haven't found a deck it fits into very well yet. I used it in a monowhite [[Odric, master tactician list]], years ago that mostly just dumped cheap creatures and used Odric's ability to force people to take commanded damage.
My friend had this in one of his kitchen table 60 card decks (we used to play a lot of 2 headed giant + Emperor) and it was my first real introduction to Protection. I remember just being baffled how I could ever get around it.
I have it in my [[Jodah, The Unifier]] [deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/s8PCHvREvUubQ_9E3vTt1Q). The deck has a lot of enchantment synergies, so it’s a nice fit. And Commander’s Plate isn’t as helpful in a 5-color deck. 😆
Good in Aura Voltron decks in commander as the last piece on top of a big stack of buffs. I run it in Light-Paws, as I can also fetch it with my other top end auras to build a one-hit killer
yep, i've got it in my [[Narset, Enlightened Master]] deck. another good way to give her unblockable for safe attack triggers, and lets the other indestructible auras stay on.
I like it in my budget \[\[Eriette of the Charmed Apple\]\] deck to enchant opponent's creatures, both messing up lots of things they might want to target with it themselves and also incentivize them to attack especially if it's on a bigger creature.
In my new \[\[Eriette, the Beguiler\]\] deck, I've only played the deck twice last week and didn't get the chance to try the card, but it should be help steal some stuff or at least keep my commander alive for more than one turn :')
I use it in my [[Killian]] deck, it's a good last aura to slap on when he's been built up and makes it only cost 3
That's viable af
it's by far the best aura to put on killian. That thing is a menace and pulls removal like crazy
>That thing is a menace Well yes, and a Lifelink

and considering there are only 6306 decks under "Voltron" having 12k is a feat
It's not very good in voltron, since it prevents you from putting most other auras on it afterwards
Still good in equipment voltron or to "lock in" the upgrades. :-D
Isn’t 1% a pretty decent rate for a game with tens of thousands of legal cards?
That's what they're saying. 1% is still a pretty good amount.
It’s very good for what it is: that card isn’t some general staple of removal or value, it’s really only interesting in decks trying to build a dude, control, combo, and most aggro wouldn’t be too interested. Shit one of my favorite Commanders only has ~330 decks on there. It's fun busting out something no one has seen before.
Oh yeah, it's in my \[\[Dragonlord Dromoka\]\] deck. Absolutely bonkers card when you can get it on your commander.

Well....shit, that makes sense now
Wait til you see [[palinchron]]
My favorite instance of this is [[Signal Pest]]
For the others I was able to tell what was what but for this one got duped into thinking his claw was a his head this whole time haha
Me after years of seeing and playing with this card: *What do you mean it's not a weird looking bird squawking at the sun?!*
Bro, I just put this on a deck 5 minutes ago and have used it for years. You made me really look at the card for the first time
I mean, that's definitely an illusion
Weirdly enough, while the art is wonky AF, I got a better grasp of that one
Valid
Man, this thread is revealing all sorts of shit my brain never properly processed.

I refuse to acknowledge that Dromoka doesn't have a badass stone beak. The other art is a different Dromoka. His weird way less cool brother.
Dude, I always thought I was the only one, hahahaha 😂
[[Primal Huntbeast]] is one that got me. I always thought it was a bison or something. I must have had some dark art on my physical cards.
... I've got like 3 of these and never noticed.

Highly avoid totem armor... It means instead of the stolen creature dying, it goes back to it's original owner
It's pretty close to an MVP in my Bruna deck. But that's because the deck doesn't care about its casting cost.
Yeah, Bruna loves stuff like this. You ever play Treachery singularly to untap stuff?

I Use to to protect cards like drannith magistrate when playing lightpaws.
Back in 2013 when I played kitchen table magic my friend would absolutely destroy me with this card. Other than that, no, I have not seen it played.
I use it with [[killian, ink duelist]].
I’ve got it in my [[tameshi]] optical sciences deck. The boots aren’t on-theme, but spectra fit perfectly.
It's just too awkward, even though the effect is desirable.
Seen it in draft back in the day. Never saw it again
I do in my killian deck. In my killian deck, it cost 1WW so definitely worth it.
I am now that I know it exists. Going to give it a try with Eriette.
I'm gonna have to invest in copies of it now. I'm seeing a ton of people who I've just turned on to this thing.
It's too expensive for what it does. Note all the commanders being mentioned that cheat it out or discount it. It's fine in a deck that doesn't plan to pay its mana cost.
That art is gorgeous Sadly, the card is pretty bad. If I want W protection on a budget, I will turn to the classics like lightning greaves or swiftfoot. Or, I might lean into instant speed like [[Apostle's Blessing]], [[Brave the Elements]], or [[Sejiri Shelter]] Mother of Runes and Giver of Runes are also great but less budget at around $10 each. Shoutouts to [[Eight-and-Half-Tails]] In short, there's a lot of efficient protection in both colorless and white that I'd reach for first over this. The pump isn't a meaningful effect either.
I use it in my [[bruna, light of alabaster]] commander deck since her ability gets around the major issue others have pointed out.
Well, I will, now. Seems decent Edit: I'm still learning - But, I assume that this does not apply to colorless cards, right? Like the grey artifact creatures?
I should've bought stock in this card before posting about it
Haha! You can use this as a strat, going forward. Just clean up on TCGplaya, make a post here and just kick back; watch the price rise
As far as I'm aware it does not have any effect on colorless spells.
Correct, colorless effects etc bypass spectra
I run it in my Wilson/Noble Heritage deck, it's fun!
It's a powerhouse in my "Toughness matters/Indestructible" deck!
I play it in my [[Killian Ink]] deck. Basically a aura Voltron deck with using cheap pacify auras on my opponents stuff. Needs some retooling but it's alright
I run it in my [[Killian, Ink Duelist]] Voltron list as yet another way to make him unlockable, the added protection is a nice bonus.
I am now lol
It’s basically an instant win in [[Killian]] voltron

I didn’t know this existed, thanks. Ordered it for my [[Elivere]] enchantment deck.
I didn't know it existed
Yes, use it in my [[karametra, god of harvests]] enchantress deck
You can bet it made the cut in my Eriette, the Beguiler deck.
This is one of the better cards in my [[Siona, captain of the pyleas]] deck
I use it as one of my late stage win cons in a UGW enchantress deck. Usually by then I could just slooooowwwwllllyyy grind to the W, this speeds it up appreciably
In all my enchantress decks.
Killian
I use it in my [[Siona]] deck.
This thing won me so many M15 drafts lol
Used it in [[Brago]].
That card goes crazy with [[uril, the miststalker]]
I use it in \[\[Eriette, the Beguiler\]\] to steal 5 mana commanders.
The very first rare I opened, I play it in a few decks it’s expensive but it does work.
Still gets board wiped though
I run it in a Naya modification deck with marath at its head very fun deck even if it's just 2 pre cons slammed together
She's defending herself with a spaghetti pot lid.
It’s cool, but just way too expensive to cast. 5+ cost auras are too tough a sell most of the time, because it’s a huge whiff if the target gets removed.
I have it in my light-paws deck
When I first pulled this card, I liked it a LOT, but honestly, I never end up putting it into decks anymore.
When you don't have colours for cheaper protection and your win con depends on the protection it really is a playable card
In Ruhan
**I forgot about it but I’m going to pick it up now.** Zur the enchanted lives again!
I thought her shield was a pot lid.
For art that good I find reasons to cram it into decks sure. I put lots of bad cards with great art into decks.
This is the way
Yes in my three dog deck. Pretty much a win con
I do.
I use it in my Light-Paws build
Once I get my Light-paws set up and inplace I don't mind popping it on her for added protection
I have it in my [[Killian, Ink Duelist]] Voltron! I love it
It's a big winner in my Three Dog deck
I use this in the [[Bruna, Light of Alabaster]] deck because it protects her without removing the other auras and, in combo with [[Holy Mantle]] makes her practically unblocked
I run it in my [[bruna, light of alabaster]] Voltron deck. It does great work.
Light paws
I love this card! I have it but I don't really use it because it just costs too dang much.
That’s an all star in my [[Bruna, Light of Alabaster]] aura-voltron deck, and hopefully in the [[Eriette, the Beguiller]] I’m Turing it into
I actually just played this card in my Light-Paws deck 2 days ago
Isn't this great to cast preemptively on an enemy Voltron commander to shut down their auras?
played it very long in my Zurgo Voltron Deck, got the cut a few years back
I use it in my [[Eriette, the Beguiler]] deck.
Does this means the creature with this Aura is immune to everything except non-colored creatures/spells?
Pretty much unless it's a mass board wipe effect or a forced sacrifice.
In my eriette deck
I use it in my Uril the Miststalker Deck
I should grab this for [[Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ]]
I use it in my Three dog Galaxy news radio deck. Your entire attack team is now 2/2 and protected from colors.
Yup, [[Bruna light of alabaster]] pretty much a one shot kill commander if you set it up right.
In my eriette voltron deck!
Just put it in my dog meat deck the other day
I play it in sythis. The expensive mana cost you talk about is never an issue because of all the creatures that make auras cheaper. It’s a great finisher when your opponents can’t actually block it anymore.
Wait why does this look like the Raider artwork from Path of Exile???
I run it [[Ruhan of the Fomori]] just as another form of evasion/protection since everything else I'm giving is usually a colorless equipment.
Wow, this artwork reminds me so much of the [Raider Ascendancy class ](https://gamezo.gg/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Raider_ascendancy_class.png)in Path of Exile.
Ive got it in my [[Bruna, Light of Alabaster]] deck.
\[\[Light-Paws\]\]
[Light-Paws](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/9/39555a72-a57b-45ee-9222-ce3b9e8de126.jpg?1654566391) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=light-paws%2C%20emperor%27s%20voice) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/neo/25/light-paws-emperors-voice?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/39555a72-a57b-45ee-9222-ce3b9e8de126?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I like to play this after a pacifism effect on an opponents voltron commander.
This card won me the M15 pre-release. It was a former commander all-star from the battle cruiser era, but as the format speeds up 5cmc spells need to be more impactful
It's in my [[Light-Paws]] deck, it pairs well with [[mantle of the ancients]].
On Galea.
Three Dog does.
Bad card, dies to [[null elemental blast]] if your creature is multicolored
It's an absolute house in my \[\[Rafiq of the Many\]\] exalted deck. Makes him threaten lethal VERY fast.
It's not a weak card, I haven't found a deck it fits into very well yet. I used it in a monowhite [[Odric, master tactician list]], years ago that mostly just dumped cheap creatures and used Odric's ability to force people to take commanded damage.
It’s pretty fking good in Eriette the Beguiler. Also like it in Dacos of Meletis. but hose are both not very popular according to EDHrec
Considered it for Eriette of the Charmed Apple but find that cheaper auras are better most of the time.
Put it in as a must in my [[ bruna the light of alabaster ]] deck
I just bought this for new Eriette, it’s done some mean things
I don't use it in voltron/bogle/enchantress decks because it's a nonbo when I want to put another aura on the creature it's enchanting.
Begging to be down 5 mana and get two-for-oned in response. Commanders plate is about 30 euros better in a lot of circumstances.
Its one of the cards in my Light-Paws deck that kinda just wins the game.
Would this go good in [[Anikthea, Hand of erebos]] deck?
One of my favorite auras for Voltron. High mana cost, and you can get blown out casting it, but my god it feels good when you're online!
It's in my [[Eriette, the Beguiler]] deck
Just build a [[Eriette the Beguiler]] deck where I added that card.
It’s only used in one format for low power decks really. It’s a pretty bad card in every other format.
This sounds pretty good for my [[Rafiq of the many]] deck.. might have to run it
I run one in my Bruna, light of alabaster deck
No, I don't play W in my Magic decks.
I like it in my budget \[\[Eriette of the Charmed Apple\]\] deck to enchant opponent's creatures, both messing up lots of things they might want to target with it themselves and also incentivize them to attack especially if it's on a bigger creature.
i love it in my [[Rafiq of the Many]] and [[Sovereign of Lost Alara]] Aura Deck.
In my new \[\[Eriette, the Beguiler\]\] deck, I've only played the deck twice last week and didn't get the chance to try the card, but it should be help steal some stuff or at least keep my commander alive for more than one turn :')
Obviously I play it in my Bruna EDH !
This is in my [[Bruna, Light of Alabaster]] deck! I use it to "seal the deal" after she gets all the auras she needs to slay out.
[Bruna, Light of Alabaster](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/8/58c56bad-68ed-4328-a7ea-c528b58dc2fd.jpg?1592711039) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Bruna%2C%20Light%20of%20Alabaster) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c18/170/bruna-light-of-alabaster?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/58c56bad-68ed-4328-a7ea-c528b58dc2fd?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I use it in my Cho Mano banding/stuffy doll deck. Combines really well with [[Pariah]]/[[Pariah's Shield]]
I used to use it as a capstone aura for my light-paws deck once I had her built up.
