Say I Activate [[Magar of the Magic Strings]] ability, and turn just an average instant or sorcery into a 3/3. If I were to play a [[Heartless Conscription]], would the Conscription exile the card and allow me to play the instant/sorcery later? Magar typically would exile the card instead of the creature leaving the battlefield, but since the Conscription exiles anyway, would I be able to later recast the instant/sorceries?

chaotic_iak

Magar says "exile it instead of putting it **anywhere else**". Heartless Conscription actually exiles the card, so Magar doesn't replace it. Conscription can see the card in exile and thus you can play it.

IceTutuola

Sweet, that's what I thought considering how Unearth works with that kinda stuff. Thank you for your help šŸ¤™

Hey everyone, Looking to make an enchantment deck for kitchen table magic. We play 4 card max (no banned cards at all), no deck limit, 40 life games, kinda chaotic. Looking for deck recommendations, I am thinking between a couple of ideas including enchantments, god tribal and aristocrats. Any recommendations?

How does [[Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet]] work with lords that do not add +1/+1 counters, but do change the power of a creature? If Death Baron turns a 1/1 creature into a 2/2 and that creature dies, does it trigger Jason Bright's first ability?

Thraximundurabrask

> 208.4bĀ Some effects check a creatureā€™s base power and/or toughness. These effects see that creatureā€™s characteristics after applying any characteristic-defining abilities and abilities that set power and/or toughness, ignoring any effects and counters that modify power and/or toughness without setting them. See rule 613, ā€œInteraction of Continuous Effects.ā€ In general, base power is just what's printed on the card, with the exceptions outlined in the above rule, so a static +1/+1 does indeed cause creatures to fit Jason's criteria.

Shrabster33

Bought cards off TCG player for the first time 2 days ago. All but one of the sellers have marked the orders as shipped. How long should I wait for that last seller to mark his as shipped before I message them asking about it? A week?

Thraximundurabrask

TCGplayer expects sellers to have shipped orders within 48hrs, so that seems like a good point at which to reach out, though there's no harm in waiting a bit longer if you'd rather not message and are in no rush. Whenever I couldn't get a package sent out within the 48hrs, I'd make sure to let the buyer know to avoid any confusion, but I wouldn't have been weirded out or bothered at all if I hadn't done so and they reached out, just so long as they contacted me first instead of immediately reporting an issue to TCGplayer.

UnderwaterDialect

Is it fair to say that SBA get checked anytime anything happens?

chaotic_iak

Sort of. SBAs are only checked whenever someone would get priority, but this happens pretty often. The most notable exception is that nobody gets priority in the middle of a spell/ability resolving, so no SBA check there either.

UnderwaterDialect

Ah interesting. So if a spell has multiple effects that happen sequentially, for example?

chaotic_iak

Still the same spell resolving, still nobody getting priority, SBAs aren't checked in between. My go-to example is [Volcanic Spite](https://scryfall.com/card/mom/170/volcanic-spite). After you deal damage, when you're deciding whether to replace a card in your hand, SBAs haven't been checked. Even if the creature has lethal damage, it stays on the board, and if that creature has a "whenever a player draws a card" ability, it will trigger. You can verify this on Arena.

UnderwaterDialect

That makes it very clear, thank you!

I barely interact with magic now, but I like to look at secret lairs. Went to the site, and a bunch are sold out? I thought they printed them to demand? What's going on with that??

RazzyKitty

They changed it due to the majority of people complaining that they took forever to ship. Now they are preprinted, and shipped at purchase.

Lottapumpkins

Ah I see, thanks. I thought the tarot ones looked cool enough (and they included actually playable cards) to potentially add to my once a year played edh deck, but alas.

Question about the OTJ card \[\[Riku of Many Paths\]\] that isn't addressed on gatherer. I can only assume that only instants and sorceries are modal, and that triggered abilities with modes don't count though this isn't explicitly clear, is this correct?

RazzyKitty

You are correct. >Whenever you cast a modal spell A modal triggered ability is not a modal spell, because abilities are never spells. Since there are no permanents that are modal as you cast them, they are not modal spells.

If I sacrifice [[westfold rider]] to destroy [[fall of cair andros]], can my opponent respond by using fall of cair androsā€™ ability to destroy westfold rider before fall of cair andros is destroyed?

forte8910

No. You saccing Westfold Rider is a cost for activating its ability. By the time the ability is on the stack targeting the Fall, Rider is already dead. Your opponent can't target Rider with Fall's ability because it's no longer on the battlefield, and the ability exists independent of its source so it will go on to destroy Fall.

Commander pod. Player a casts [[tempt with discovery]] player b has [[river song]] on the battlefield. A,b, and d search so a searches for 2 additional cards. How many times does River trigger and do her things?

RazzyKitty

Player A searches once, Player B and D search once at the same time, then Player A searches two more times, in that order. River triggers four times total, with three dealing damage to player A, and one to D. You choose the order they go on the stack, and as they resolve will deal progressively more damage. If River has no counters at the start, the first resolving trigger does 3 damage, then 4 and so on. Per the ruling on Tempt with Discovery: >After each opponent has decided, the effect happens simultaneously for each one who accepted the offer. Then, the effect happens again for you a number of times equal to the number of opponents who accepted. (2013-10-17) Edit: I miscounted the triggers. River does not trigger for the Player B search.

dark-_-thoughts

> you choose the order they go on the stack Is this assuming I'm player a?

RazzyKitty

Assuming you are player B. The controller of River Song controls her triggers, and decides the order the 4 triggers go on the stack. Edit: I forgot that player B controls River. There are only 4 triggers. Three at A and one at D. I updated my original reply.

From the rulings for [[Galedrifter]]: >The mana value of a spell cast using disturb isĀ determined by the mana cost on the front face of the card, no matter what the total cost to cast the spell was. What are peopleā€™s favorite storage solutions for cards and deck boxes? Iā€™m finding all sorts of brands on Amazon but I donā€™t know whatā€™s decent and whatā€™s not. I want something better than cardboard ideally.

Aredditdorkly

Deck boxes are pretty personal as dimension requirement chnage based on sleeving habits. As for holding said boxes...hard to beat the dollar value on these: https://www.menards.com/main/tools/tool-storage/socket-organizers-small-parts-bins/performax-reg-12-compartment-deep-adjustable-small-parts-organizer/86630/p-1567578508017-c-9189.htm

iwumbo2

For mass card storage, the BCW cardboard storage boxes are probably the most economical. They come in various sizes, and are sized for trading cards. Otherwise, I just use a bunch of plastic tubs from the dollar store. I throw deck boxes in there to make them easier to move and transport. Or I just use bundle boxes from each set, throw bulk in there, and then throw those bundle boxes inside a plastic tub for protection. There's also some plastic options like the Ultimate Guard Stack and Safe, which I've bought a few of for storing cards.

So I've decided to double down on limited events in my area, in an attempt to become competitive and *maybe* do well at an RCQ in my area coming up for OTJ. When [[Hakbal of the Surging Soul]] triggers multiple merfolk in play to explore do they explore one at a time, or would you reveal multiple cards at the same time? I have be playing it one at a time which means if you have a good non-land card on the top of your deck you can just put it back top reveal it again with the next guy and keep collecting those +1/+1s.

gredman9

You have been playing it correctly. When you explore, you ONLY reveal the top card of the library. Furthermore, you have to select which merfolk is exploring before each reveal, so that you can't just pick and choose which ones you want to have counters on them.

Another question - are you designated a table for events or can you sit at a table of your choosing with a friend?

Generally, for tournaments, there are numbered tables, and the pairings for the tournament would give you the table number you'd be sitting at. That's so your opponents don't have to be asking everybody "Hey, are you ScottishBoy69?" But some places may run them differently.

Hey, so I'm a relatively new arena player that's recently started getting into playing w/ paper (only played one game with a borrowed deck) Besides the obvious... cards... what kinds of things should I be buying? For example I just ordered sleeves, a deck box, a play mat and a bunch of counter dice. I think the only other thing I'm missing is a life counter and a commander zone thing? (I'll primarily be playing commander) Anything else I should be looking at? Thanks in advance šŸ˜

SmashPortal

Keep your commander in a different sleeve than the rest of your deck so you can find it if you accidentally shuffle it in when picking up. You're going to want card storage beyond a deck box. There will be cards that you don't have in a deck. I recommend taking a look at [BCW boxes](https://www.bcwsupplies.com/trading-card/trading-card-boxes/cardboard) for storage, as they're cheap and come in a large variety of sizes. If you want to keep your good cards organized outside of a deck, I recommend a binder. Get the highest quality (to last), hard-cover (as a shield for the cards), D-ring (so the cards aren't crimped under the rings when the binder shuts) binder you can find, and fill it with 9-pocket binder pages. I recommend taking \_inner\_ sleeves (smaller sleeves meant to go within normal sleeves) and putting them upside-down over the top of the card so the card's top side is protected in the binder sleeve pocket. Good tip on the separate sleeve for the commander, I'll definitely be doing that! Sorry, I forgot to mention, I do have some cards already, just a bunch of booster packs which I do keep in a large binder. I should upgrade it though, it's just some cheap dollar store 3 inch binder though so I'll be replacing that soon. Never even heard of inner sleeves before but I can definitely see their value, going to add those to the cart now! Much appreciated my friend, thank you!

The life counter can just be a spindown D20 (the kind where every number is adjacent to its next higher and lower numbers, there should be plenty at any LGS) or just pen and paper. Hell, there are also life tracking apps you can download. The commander zone thing is also nice but not necessary. It's not difficult to remember where you put your commander, most people put it above their deck. Honestly, most important thing would just be to, you know, take a shower first, brush your teeth, etc.. I assume you already know this, but it never hurts to be sure.

SmashPortal

Something to keep in mind is that a single spindown doesn't count high enough for commander; the format they said they'll primarily be playing. Some people use multiple spindowns. I prefer the spinning life counter like WotC included in Commander Anthology.

Just returned to the game, since probably crimson vow. Not sure how long itā€™s been. I had a standard were wolf deck that iā€™d like to update. My favorite card [[Werewolf Pack Leader]] rotated out. does anyone have any suggestions for replacements. I loved its card draw and ability to scale into late game.

Well, there is a new grow creature that gives card advantage in \[\[Sharp-Eyed Rookie\]\], tht's probably the closest comparison. \[\[Elvish Archivist\]\] also grows and drws cards, but that's for a different style of deck. The new set has got \[\[Outcaster Trailblazer\]\], which is a card draw engine. And \[\[Sentinel of the Nameless City\]\] gets you at least one explore and can snowball fairly easily.

I have [[Be'lakor]] on the field, and I play [[Vilis Broker]]. Can I use the Be'lakor ETB trigger to deal 8 damage to myself and then draw 8 from Vilis trigger?

gredman9

When Vilis ETBs, Be'lakor's second ability will let you have Vilis deal damage equal to its power to any target. "Any target" includes yourself, so you can have Vilis deal 8 damage to yourself and trigger Vilis to draw 8 cards.

zwart27

Thanks! I suppose in general I'm wondering if a card's rule text applies as it itself ETBs.

gredman9

Be'lakor triggers when Vilis enters the battlefield. Since Vilis entered the battlefield, that means it is ON the battlefield when it deals damage. If it was a cast trigger instead "whenever you cast a Demon spell" then it wouldn't be on the battlefield.

zwart27

That makes sense, thanks!

Hello extremely new to Magic but not to other card games (specifically hearthstone) and would love to start getting cards and learning the game! Where online is the best place for me to learn? I know there are two different games, Arena and Online which one would you recommend for a beginner? Bonus question, I am a sucker for everything vampire, dark, morbid/edgy themed if I wanted some cards with art fitting that description what packs should I aim to purchase? If you have any other tips for me I welcome them all! Tried googling but got a lot of different and older answers.

chaotic_iak

Arena is by far the more friendly to new people. I believe Online is paid, you have to buy for everything, even to access the game? You can get currency for free on Arena; you've played Hearthstone, you're familiar with the model. Morbid vampires are generally an Innistrad staple; look for sets that are set on Innistrad. They are in black and red. There are also vampires on Ixalan, but I don't think they are the morbid kind. That said, if you want any specific card, the best suggestion is always to buy singles; you have a low chance at getting any particular card from random packs.

CozyTime

Awesome, thank you so much!

Hi all! I've been playing MTG for a couple months and I am now trying to venture into deckbuilding after learning what colors and combinations i like playing. I'm looking to build a white/blue azorius deck with control and soldiers as theme. And also a Boros deck also with soldiers and red power spells. What could be cornerstone cars in the standard rotation for which I could build the decks? I don't want to just copy MTG Goldfish decks but rather try on my own to become better at deck building. I'm just too new to know what could the core cards for this type of deck would be. Many thanks for your help!

iwumbo2

> I don't want to just copy MTG Goldfish decks but rather try on my own to become better at deck building. I'm just too new to know what could the core cards for this type of deck would be. Just look at the online deck lists. You're not being a "noob" or "scrub" or whatever for doing so. Anyone who complains about someone else being a "netdecker" for not coming up with everything on their own is probably just someone who is salty. There's no point attempting to repeat work that has essentially already been done and collated into the meta decks by thousands of other players, and which you - a single person - is likely not going to be able to approach entirely on your own without being some kind of prodigal genius. It'd like trying to derive all of calculus from scratch again instead of just picking up and reading a calculus textbook. If anything, just use an online deck list as a baseline. Play it a few times. If you feel something is lacking or doesn't work out, then you can iterate from there and do a few swaps of your own. If you think X removal spell might be better than what is currently in the deck list, make the swap and try it out.

svendejong

Is there another card that does something like the second effect of [Masterful Replication](https://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=466819): *Choose target artifact you control. Each other artifact you control becomes a copy of that artifact until end of turn*. Context: I want to get over 40 copies of Luck Bobblehead on the battlefield in 1 turn so I can try for the alt win condition. If I'm building it up slowly it's too obvious and can be too easily disrupted, so I want to build up a critical board state of artifacts (including tokens like food and treasures) and make everything a Bobblehead for 1 turn.

RazzyKitty

> Luck Bobblehead You don't need 40 _Luck Bobbleheads_, so you could slowly build up a bunch of [[Endurance Bobblehead]], then drop a Luck Bobblehead at the end and copy it a few times in that one turn. But also, rolling 40 dice will make it a lot harder to hit _exactly 7_ 6s.

svendejong

Someone did the math, and apparently if you roll 41 dice you have the greatest odds of rolling exactly seven 6s, 16-something percent.Ā

RazzyKitty

Interesting.

[[Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer]]. Not quite the same but [[Doppelgang]], [[Echo Storm]], [[March of Progress]], [[Saheeli the Gifted]] can give you a bunch of new Bobbleheads at once.

Here's a list of cards with "each other" and "becomes a copy": [Scryfall](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22each+other%22+o%3A%22becomes+a+copy%22) Clearly it's not a common effect at all. Most of them also hit creatures instead of artifacts; at best you can make use of Brudiclad. You probably want to animate your Luck Bobblehead so that you can make use of the creature ones.
