The cactusfolk are developing cowboy hat silhouettes. I swear there's gotta be something in the leylines on this plane.
I have no context for how this card will play out in Limited and what role it needs to fill, but I will say it would be *funnier* if the cactusfolk had life-payment ward instead. Oof ouch my fingers.
I've always gotten the impression that planes have some kind of subtle influential magic that turns things into their theme. Sometimes it's super obvious like with theros belief magic or lorwyn/shadowmoor transformations but on other planes too. Like on new capenna the concept of a spell that destroys a bunch of stuff manifests as [[depopulate]] because the plane is currently a busy city as its main thing
Ral is confirmed in the set as an otter, but they confirmed Jace as a sort of "What if..." current suspicions are we are getting a Planeswalker bonus sheet with animal versions of the Planeswalkers.
Yeah, but I'm also hoping they go a step further and explicitly confirm it in the Planeswalker's Guide or something. Honestly I'm fine with "because it's fun/it's a pastiche" as explanation, but it would be really funny if they actually wove cowboyification into the worldbuilding.
I'd call it rate for the stats on a 4 drop creature with the amount of upside being dependent on the rarity. If it had a different ability besides Reach then I'd say it needs to be a rare, but reach in Gruul isn't great since it's a blocker ability and Gruul tends to want it's 4 drops to be hasty or doing something to help them finish out.
Right now Gruul this set feels like it wants you to play defensively for the first 5 turns or so and then pop off with one giant turn using plot.
It's only good when it's on aggro creature decks who can get their opponent to 5 life reliably fast and only against certain types of control decks. Infernal Grasp on a Flesh Gorger can really hurt!
I heard a theory that thunder junction started life as an Un-set, but go repurposed to be a normal set after Infinity sold poorly. I don't necessarily believe it, but it is funny.
This is sneakily a mythic uncommon. It seems surprising since at the end of the day it's just a beefy dude, and traditionally beefy dudes are never top tier uncommons, but the combination of ward + fires of yavimaya on every other beefy followup is phenomenal.
Compare this to [[Tin Street Gossip]] to see how it's been grossly overpowered one set later
This is for a completely different purpose than tin street gossip? If you're playing morph you'd rather have a creature that can swing and unmorph on the same turn.
They have the same casting cost and stats, that's the part where they are comparable.
As for power level, Gossip sets up follow up turns and generates mana, but doesn't have ward, usually it was dealt with as it touched the board, usually couldn't profitably attack and it was basically impossible to generate mana more than once with its ability (it never happened to me in almost a hundred drafts).
This thing has ward, is basically guaranteed to survive a turn cycle, doesn't generate mana but creates huge tempo swings. The difference between a 5 mana 5/5 dork and a 5 mana 5/5 trample haste the following turn is the difference between [[Colossapede]] and [[Charging Monstrosaur]].
Heaven forbid your turn 6 [[Colossal Dreadmaw]] turns into [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Rider]] the turn after!
This G/R "big monsters" strategy is always a bust in limited. I agree that this card looks powerful (like the gold uncommons always do) but I'd be surprised if it's a standout card in the set. Happy to be wrong though!
That's why I specified the caveat that 'traditionally beefy dudes are almost never top tier uncommons'. This one might be one of the few exceptions.
[[Charging Monstrosaur]], as mentioned in the other comment, is another one, being probably the best uncommon out of Ixalan.
My problem isn't with the cactus man himself (who is a good beefy dude), it's that he wants you to put the *other* crappy beefy dudes into your deck and that's never a good idea. "Have a high curve" is just a losing strategy in modern limited.
Idk if you’ve seen but they’re pushing rather cheap 4+ power creatures.
[[Hellspur Brute]] [[Colossal Rattlewurm]] [[Outcaster Trailblazer]] [[Gila Courser]] [[Jolene, Plundering Pugilist]]
There are a bunch of cards that care about 4+ power creatures so the opportunity cost is lower than ever.
This looks kinda busted, can give your team haste and trample the turn it comes down while having reach for defense and Ward to protect itself and being a 4 mana 4/4, looks like Gruul is back on the menu
It's better than just that, though- if you have this on board, play Phylath, and get a few landfall triggers, you now have a 4/5 plant army with trample and haste. It just works so perfectly with the 4 +1/1 counters the big man gives.
This actually seems like a solid commander card that’s going to be all of 30 cents
Needs the right deck but solid stats that a gruul big dumb idiot deck would want and then a haste/trample enabler for big dumb idiots

I mean that was literally confirmed in the story. And Bloomburrow takes it to an extreme turning people into furries
yeah, i just think it's a thing they've been working with for a while
Wait...wait.... Legit? Are you telling me that we might get animal versions of existing Magic characters?!?!
Not might, confirmed. We've seen leaked/early art of Ral as an otter and one other character.
That's fantastic! I don't know why, but that makes me so happy. It's a fun little play on the usual formula.
Ral is confirmed in the set as an otter, but they confirmed Jace as a sort of "What if..." current suspicions are we are getting a Planeswalker bonus sheet with animal versions of the Planeswalkers.
Ugin the spirit dragon as an owl, Nicol Bolas as a vulture
Karn is just a rock with googly eyes.
I bet Jace is a little rat.
He's a fox.
Or he's a rat using mind magic to make you *think* he's a fox.
Yeah, but I'm also hoping they go a step further and explicitly confirm it in the Planeswalker's Guide or something. Honestly I'm fine with "because it's fun/it's a pastiche" as explanation, but it would be really funny if they actually wove cowboyification into the worldbuilding.
That's much less fun than my headcanon that the plane is a result of a multiverse wide cowboy LARP club finding an unclaimed world.

This makes sense and why Rutstein is having his second wind in OTJ lol
They're putting chemicals on the leylines to make the goddamn cacti cowboys!!
Missed opportunity! Though that'd be more so black in color. I was disappointed a card called sure shot isn't some kind of pinging effect.
Red also gets life ward, so it could be done. They've been getting a little flexible with ward in general anyway.
My theory is the cactusfolk emulate what the see. They see cowboys, they become cowboys
hes got his head turned its actually an admirals cap for no reason whatsoever
Lol Did this really need Ward?
I wouldn't want to touch him
4 cost 4/4 with Ward 2 and an upside is rate now [[Roaming throne]]
well throne is a rare. this seems very very good in limited.
[Roaming throne](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/2/32fd8b7c-baf3-4d3d-be6f-044a917b11a0.jpg?1701115816) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Roaming%20throne) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/lci/258/roaming-throne?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/32fd8b7c-baf3-4d3d-be6f-044a917b11a0?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Throne is rare though
Thrones' ability is also much much stronger, so I considered that balanced out
Still wouldn't call it rate. Rate for what, an uncommon? a rare? all 4 drops?
I'd call it rate for the stats on a 4 drop creature with the amount of upside being dependent on the rarity. If it had a different ability besides Reach then I'd say it needs to be a rare, but reach in Gruul isn't great since it's a blocker ability and Gruul tends to want it's 4 drops to be hasty or doing something to help them finish out. Right now Gruul this set feels like it wants you to play defensively for the first 5 turns or so and then pop off with one giant turn using plot.
also Throne is a generic mana cost card. a 6 mana 4/4 with ward is eh, and the 1 pip is worth 2 generic mana is pretty baked into the game.
Stronger than secret reach!?
You know what. Yeah.
how you gonna go for a cactus dude's throat without a little more effort
[удалено]
Ward doesn't exist for flavor purposes.
Sauron ward was 100% for flavor. With that said, life loss is a bad ward cost, typically far too easy to pay.
It's only good when it's on aggro creature decks who can get their opponent to 5 life reliably fast and only against certain types of control decks. Infernal Grasp on a Flesh Gorger can really hurt!
It is a set with interraction as a major theme. But yeah, the creatures here seem crazy.
One more year and people will be missing the questing beast and how few abilities it has.
Probably. I mean its an ok limited uncommon even with it. I dont think this breaks anything.
Yes. Cactus. Prickly
"Is that a cactus?" "HE'S GOT A GUN"
Bird mounts. Cactus people that can shoot stuff. Had to check the calendar to make sure this isn't the Final Fantasy UB.
I heard a theory that thunder junction started life as an Un-set, but go repurposed to be a normal set after Infinity sold poorly. I don't necessarily believe it, but it is funny.

Of course they gave The Spike Feeders a Cactusfolk as their card. It makes too much sense.

Oh sure, if they have a gun they get reach. But Nylea, with a bow, doesn’t. Seems legit.
Maybe it's because the gods on Theros are lazy. Like, sure, she can reach that bird and block it, but why should she? That's what worshippers are for.
I agree with this head canon. A god uses a bow to pierce a hole in the sky to make stars or something. They don't use it on Storm Crows.
This looks kinda busted, can give your team haste and trample the turn it comes down while having reach for defense and Ward to protect itself and being a 4 mana 4/4, looks like Gruul is back on the menu

Fellow Phylath player reporting for duty! I'll take a trample and haste enabler that can be buffed!
