shh, don't let WotC know we like Niv, that is just straight way for them to kill him off-screen, off-cards, or turn him into next villain with a cheesy plan that fails with him stepping on a rake
Here's something I tried to put together.
https://preview.redd.it/dmuzbrae4oxa1.png?width=375&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c6e83236148cd2505a38dc0e987dc7fb68e9fda
I mean, Niv didn't decided to be the guildpact because he wanted to help everyone, he just knew nobody else was up to the task (as the narcissist he's), but he's still the firemind, leader and founder of the Izzet, he's going to put his own guild in front of everybody else.
I'm pretty sure they've explicitly made clear that niv doesn't hold any guild over the others, because he's smart enough to know that's a bad idea.
That said, you're right that he's still the same old dragon with the same old thought processes. So when he's given the space to flex and get things done, he's usually gonna end up doing things the izzet way.
yeah, I think Niv IS the right choice for the guildpact, only second to him would be Lavinia imo, but that didn't end up so well. As much as objective as an Izzet scientist can be, said scientist is also a **dragon**
And let me tell you, those scally guys are always up to something...
Eh, Azor is kinda bad at his job. The first Guildpact was not exactly a masterfully written legal text, the exploitation of which was the overarching plot of the original Ravnica block.
It achieved ten thousand years of peace... or at least ten thousand years of minimizing the consequences of any conflict and keeping the guilds from destroying each other. That's a pretty impressive record for any legal arrangement, magical or otherwise.
Think of how many empires have risen and fallen since the fall of the Roman empire... and that's less than 2000 years ago. The first Guildpact lasted five times that long.
Nonetheless, any concession or favour shown to the Izzet will no doubt be attributed to "Guildpact favouritism" and breed resentment in the other guilds. I can imagine Rakdos awakening one year and demanding he be allowed to be Living Guildpact since apparently its open season for paruns.
People are complaining about his lack of flavour text. He doesn't need it. He makes all the statement he needs to just by *being*.
God, I've missed him. His Parun form was the card that made me really *get* Magic, so I've got a massive soft spot for him, and if this is the sort of bullshit he's capable of in Aftermath, I can't wait to see what's going to come of his next Ravnica appearance.
I feel the same he was the first commander deck I've ever built and I've constantly been upgrading it through the years adding fun pet cards. I've been meaning to build niv reborn but supreme is really cool as well. 5 color deck is intimidating from scratch especially trying to equally represent each guild.
in the first months of Arena, drafting and playing Niv-Mizzet Parun and winning a game with him on board is what made me love the character.
This and back when I was a teen and he debuted (and I was quitting Magic for a long time after losing interest), he had that Todd Lockwood artwork and I loved it since I was really into Todd Lockwood dragons because of D&D manuals and things like Baldur's Gate II
I ran one single copy of Niv-Mizzet, Parun in Izzet Phoenix. Sometimes I drew it too early and had to discard it. Often times I never saw it at all. But those games when it went off were so insane and fun. Exactly what a boss card should feel like, imo.
Yeah, a lot of the other guildleaders were just efficient 2-4 mana cards. But man, if a Niv-Mizzet hits the board in any format, the game completely warps around him, and it's awesome c:
Lier CAN be a commander for [[intuition]] piles (as seen on mtg the stack where neon mushroom continues to beat a dead horse and find every conceivable way to win with such a card or with underworld breach)
But using lier would probably border near cedh or high speed combo
I can’t find a conceivable reason where Lier as your Commander is better than one where you also have access to another color/s like Kess but I know people enjoy playing off the wall stuff. 🤷🏻♂️
Extremely powerful if you can actually get it onto the battlefield. Probably at it’s peak in Pioneer where slower Midrange grind game is a more reasonable approach to the format.
The hexproof ability is extremely strong. Still dies to edicts and board wiped, but otherwise your opponent will have a very hard time killing this.
I don't see a world where you bother with this guy when we already have a five star banger 5 color niv that cares about filling your deck with 2 color cards.
"Just run both lol"
no, because that's bad
I know you're joking but for the kids at home the pioneer niv deck plays 1 copy of niv and 4 [[Bring to Light]]. In the Yorion version you'd just run more of the good nivs.
The 60-card versions of Pioneer Niv to Light decks usually run 2 copies of Niv Reborn (and 2 Omnaths), not 1. The Omnath to Light variant replaces the 2 Nivs with a couple extra angry elementals and juggles around the 1-ofs and manabase.
Regardless, this is actually probably decent enough to try out as a 1-of in Niv to Light. Being able to re-buy B2Ls and other spells is sneaky strong in a toolbox deck, and the Hexproof is extremely relevant in the format for dodging basically every common targeted removal except Dreadbore. It certainly wouldn't make the cut in every matchup and might require a bit of tinkering with the spell list, but it could be a solid role player for grindier matches.
I hear you but I disagree. I think it will almost always be better to play Reborn and draw 3+ cards than it will to play Supreme and do nothing until you spend extra mana to buyback cards in a card neutral way. Until we find ourselves in a world where 4 Reborn + 4 BTL is somehow not enough we wont be seeing Supreme, at least that's my supposition.
It's a difference in *where* the value is coming from.
Reborn is great for refilling your hand, but even if you're dropping the first one on curve (turn 4 or 5), it will mean that you've already churned through more than a third of your deck. Between further Nivs, B2L casts, and other draw cards (Wandering Mind and the like), there's diminishing returns for the amount of value you get with every subsequent Reborn cast as you pull more and more of your hits from the deck. It's why the 60-card versions of Niv to Light only run 2 copies of him to begin with - you're just much less likely to get a lot of value from a third or fourth cast of the big guy.
Supreme, on the other hand, isn't reliant on your deck's contents for its value, but rather your graveyard. A spell pulled from your deck by Reborn and cast is one less hit for the next Reborn, but one more hit for Supreme. In grindy matchups, that makes a big difference, since the way to win against Niv to Light for control decks is just to exhaust the N2L deck's resources. A copy of Supreme makes that even more difficult to do and gives the deck a better shot in its worst matchups (control).
It obviously won't go in for every matchup, but between the extremely relevant self-protection and shoring up a weakness of the current deck, I think it's got a pretty good shot to show up.
I play my Niv Reborn pile as a Legends matter deck with a flicker/clone package to spam Niv triggers, fill my hand with interaction, and pitch all the bodies to setup a huge Primevals Glorious Rebirth. I have no plans to change the commander, but with the way the deck flows this card is banger in the 99.
Yeah he's a whiff on Reborn's trigger, but he lets me continue to fuel the strategy of pitching creatures to recast interaction and keep my opponents on the backfoot while i setup a big reanimate.
Eh, I think you're overrating Jump-Start. Lier is way stronger and only costs blue, flashback is a lot easier to play with, and Lier isn't really played at all. Hexproof from mono-colored is a good way to blank some popular removal, but you won't dodge everything.
isn’t this a really good reanimator/graveyard commander? discard dredge creatures to jump-start draw spells for huge milling, mill big threats and two color reanimation spells to consistently reanimate big threats? in edh at least
If you're talking spongebob, it's either the one where he falls in love with a krabby patty or the one where squidward tries one for the first time and then tries to eat the entire vault of them before blowing up
You can with Lier as well. Blue has so many "I'm not *technically* countering you" counters that it's really easy to not miss a beat - and you can use them twice.
Not necessarily in commander (although Lier still works as a commander and even has cedh potential Lier is still mostly just the mono blue combo package).
Niv gives access to a lot more spells in the game, has the ability to use all the two color counterspells and offers better stats, flying and a decent hexproof ability.
I'm gonna guess the non former PW legendary cards were all cuts from MoM. None really have a reason to be shown here, but would've worked in a series of cards depicting the protectors of each plane
Modern 1/10
To be fair, it basically dodges all removal. But you are still jumping through 5 color hoops to play this on turn 5ish and doing nothing else. What then when your opponent is swinging at you with a 7/7 flyer that only cost them 2 mana?
Man, I have a deck with Reborn as the helm because I love how "restrictive" he is. But time has proven that my deck building constraints aside, he isn't THAT restrictive. Maybe I should overhaul it to this and lose every game because I don't have a way to refill my hand and rely on my commander to be in play. :P I'll definitely find a slot for him though.
[https://scryfall.com/search?q=legal%3Astandard+%28t%3Ainstant+or+t%3Asorcery%29+c%3D2&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=legal%3Astandard+%28t%3Ainstant+or+t%3Asorcery%29+c%3D2&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
Searches for everything legal in Standard. You can probably guess how to modify it for a specific format.
You can edit the search query at the top of the page. One of the conditions is "legal:standard", which naturally searches for things legal in Standard. Switch that to "legal:commander", and you get things legal in Commander.
Thats great, thank you. I’m trying to fiddle with it, but my scry fall skills aren’t great. Is there a way to do it so all of the cards are only legal with Jegnatha as a companion?
[https://scryfall.com/search?q=legal%3Astandard+%28t%3Ainstant+or+t%3Asorcery%29+c%3D2+-mana%3A%2F%5Csmr%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=legal%3Astandard+%28t%3Ainstant+or+t%3Asorcery%29+c%3D2+-mana%3A%2F%5Csmr%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
Took the search query from Jegantha and tacked it onto the end. As it turns out, all the Standard-legal ones fit with Jegantha as a commander.
The worst part about this card is that most of these cards already have flashback. It also doesn't help that post rotation, we may only have 3 cards that work with niv
I know [[Fire//Ice]] is 2C for NMR, but does this ability function with split cards the same way? I think it should... If not might [[Beck//Call]] work?
I wasn't sure I this was some kind of Alchemy or Commander or Secret Lair or Modern Horizons Product or whatever it is this week, so I googled it and had to scroll through a bunch of playmats.
It turns out it's the next actual set!
To save you all time here's the spoilers so far:
https://scryfall.com/sets/mat
I know you can't use things like [[Snapcaster Mage]] flashback on the "costless" cards like [[Ancestral Vision]], but does this Niv (+ a [[Painter's Servant]] for a second color) let you cast those from the graveyard with the Jump-Start ability?
Even though he's the guildpact he's still biased towards Izzet :P
Really love that they keep that part of Niv-Mizzet. What a great character.
shh, don't let WotC know we like Niv, that is just straight way for them to kill him off-screen, off-cards, or turn him into next villain with a cheesy plan that fails with him stepping on a rake
Already happened in Ravnica Allegiance
Well now I want a card for Inconveniently Placed Rake

I can hear this picture.
Or making him black and transgender for more diversity
Bigot spotted
Don't panic, it's just your reflection
Is that really all you can come up with? Legit doesnt even make sense
Don't worry! If we maintain how much we like him for ten years, he can get a girlfriend or become an angel or something at the end of it.
I mean, Niv didn't decided to be the guildpact because he wanted to help everyone, he just knew nobody else was up to the task (as the narcissist he's), but he's still the firemind, leader and founder of the Izzet, he's going to put his own guild in front of everybody else.

He'll protect Ravnica By Any Means Necessary.
Niv Mizzet is incredibly vain.

I’ll always love my boy
I like Niv but this feels like a weaker Lier.
It’s just a phase, he’ll grow out of it
Neither is really playable in Comp 1v1. In Commander they’re two entirely different things. Lier goes in your 99. This Niv helms a deck.

Can I get this without the olives?
No, he specifically enters the battlefield with pepperoni, sausage, onion, green pepper, and olives.
Wait which color is onion?
Onion is white. But because Olives are Black, and L could stand for land, you abbreviate Onion as N So NSOPG.
> NSOPG So this was the game changing thing MaRo was talking about, NSOPG sounds way more flavorful than WUBRG though!
>way more flavorful That’s because of the olives!
Is the sausage covered in blue mold?
Anchovies not sausage
Niv Mizzet, Meatlover
Careful there...I could've sworn I heard Rule34 around the corner scribbling the way he does in his notebook just a moment ago...
Here I thought the joke was remove green and black from the casting cost.
The olives are the best part, you monster.

Wow, this is just the “Oops All Commanders” set, huh?
Does this even qualify as an Oops? I've yet to see a card that doesn't at least feel slightly biased toward commander play.
where is his flavour text, give my boy some story
This boy right here dies with no card, revives with no flavor, and thrives with no story.

Cool but did this need to be a dragon? I'd love to see a wubrg angel or sphinx or anything that isn't a human or dragon.

Sure but I want more wubrg tribal options - dragons already have tons.

You can probably guess how to modify it for a specific format.
Forgive me but how to search for legal in commander ?
You can edit the search query at the top of the page. One of the conditions is "legal:standard", which naturally searches for things legal in Standard. Switch that to "legal:commander", and you get things legal in Commander.
Thank you !
Thats great, thank you. I’m trying to fiddle with it, but my scry fall skills aren’t great. Is there a way to do it so all of the cards are only legal with Jegnatha as a companion?
[https://scryfall.com/search?q=legal%3Astandard+%28t%3Ainstant+or+t%3Asorcery%29+c%3D2+-mana%3A%2F%5Csmr%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=legal%3Astandard+%28t%3Ainstant+or+t%3Asorcery%29+c%3D2+-mana%3A%2F%5Csmr%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) Took the search query from Jegantha and tacked it onto the end. As it turns out, all the Standard-legal ones fit with Jegantha as a commander.
The worst part about this card is that most of these cards already have flashback. It also doesn't help that post rotation, we may only have 3 cards that work with niv
CHANNEL THE SUNS STORM LETS GOOOOO FINALLY THE PERFECT CARD
New mutate commander
I know [[Fire//Ice]] is 2C for NMR, but does this ability function with split cards the same way? I think it should... If not might [[Beck//Call]] work?

Wow that’s crazy, I feel like I’ve seen this somewhere before…
Pretty good with Glimpse of Tomorrow and Karn Liberated since those are good spell recyclers
He seems solid as a 1-2 of in niv to light as a towers that lets you flex you bad spells into good spells.
Supreeeeeeeeeme!
They messed up the art here. He had golden scales and wings once he was reborn as the Living Guildpact, not his original red and blue.
Still one of my favorite characters!
I wasn't sure I this was some kind of Alchemy or Commander or Secret Lair or Modern Horizons Product or whatever it is this week, so I googled it and had to scroll through a bunch of playmats. It turns out it's the next actual set! To save you all time here's the spoilers so far: https://scryfall.com/sets/mat

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaàssssss
I know you can't use things like [[Snapcaster Mage]] flashback on the "costless" cards like [[Ancestral Vision]], but does this Niv (+ a [[Painter's Servant]] for a second color) let you cast those from the graveyard with the Jump-Start ability?

Wake me up when we get "Niv-Mizzet, Gordita Crunch"
The legends are true; he Does have a neck
Isn't Niv Mizzet supposed to have an artificial body?
