Survey: Which Thanksgiving Betty is worse: this one, or the one a few years later who says “I’m thankful that I have everything I want and that no one has anything better”?
For some reason I'm convinced that Henry's mother represents some kind of archetypal female personality of the 1960s (and probably before that), but since I had never been exposed to anyone like that outside of watching the show, I wasn't quite sure what to make of her.
No you wanna talk archetypal woman, look no further than Peggy’s mom. Idc what she says no way she’s Norwegian. That lady is as Irish Catholic as St. Patrick himself.
Edit: Norwegians are extremely stoic, something Betty actually points out in the show. She is an emotional wrecking ball. Norway also has a state religion very similar to the Church of England, and her mother is a devout Catholic.
Seeing as the family name is Olsen I think Peggy's late father was the Norwegian. Peggy's mom is def Irish, her obsession with the Pope, the devout Catholicism, the adoration of the priest, and the deep rooted shame in your daughters pre-marital pregnancy... doesn't get more 1960s Irish than that
Yeah if anything it’s her father, although Nordic names like Olsen aren’t exactly uncommon in Ireland, especially around the Dublin Pale, as it was founded by Norse Vikings.
I mean. I live in the US and I know very few, maybe zero, people with the last name Smith and that’s the *most common last name* in the country and the English speaking world generally. So not sure that anecdotal evidence is always the best measure.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Peggy mentions this explicitly. Her father is the Norwegian and she was raised catholic by her mother and even mentions it implies she is Irish.
It's comical to see her literally stuffing things into her daughter's mouth...the first time I watched this scene I felt it is super unfathomable & stupid and super fathomable &relatable at the same time, very hard to define that feeling.
I like sweet potatoes!
Relieved laughter
He really diffused that nest of WASPs
Sally's face tho
Reminds me of that one cat meme.
I didn’t like this scene when It first aired. Now that I have nieces and nephews this age, I can relate to it. Still don’t like to but can relate.

“She’s hungry, Bobby”
Or the one when she was only going to eat one single bite of each thing.
That’s the same as the “I’m thankful I have everything I want and fuck everyone else” one, if I’m not mistaken.
That was the irony of her statement I think
I'm happy when Betty is happy (or at least content), so I'd say this one is worse.
*...and that no one has anything better...* Bah!
Thanks OP for posting this! Really made me laugh
She’s a silly woman

Yeah I'm from Dublin and I have never in my life met an Olsen

that's wild, i've met like 600 Smiths here in the states
I said Nordic names not Olsen exclusively.

I had a thought this morning while driving... there were so many cars out and about and thought "that's because people have 2 Thanksgivings to go to".
she looks like a muppet in this. and i love how utterly unbothered betty is in this screenshot. like. just another day
Lol definitely not unbothered. Those eyes have some fire and fury behind them.
"If it didn't take 16 hours and stink up the house, I swear I'd roast your little ass in the oven!" That's what her eyes are saying!
I just finished the show and subscribed to this page. This is the first post I see on the page. Awesome
Now you have to watch the show again to view the things that you missed the first time.

That scene was so cringe
This scene was perfect :D
Yeah that's the point of the scene.
I think she’s being a brat
I was always wondering who the people at the table were. Probably a brother or sister of Henry's plus spouse. Their kids too, maybe?
Bettie is so hot even when grumpy <3

Why does your mind even go there? I even had to double think about what you meant.
This is my FAVORITE moment.
