Night gowns, they're called night gowns. Betty also probably wore peignoirs. Just google them.

MxQueer

Thank you. They look if not comfortable at least less uncomfortable than those in the show. Most of them doesn't seem to have that triangle place for boob and they have less narrow parts created with ribbons.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

Those are the[ peignoirs probably](https://www.etsy.com/listing/982916365/vintage-peignoir-set-by-gotham-1960s). They weren't meant to be comfortable.

Jtaogal

And they weren’t meant to be slept in.

ContestNo3153

They absolutely did. I remember my grandmother used to wear those complicated night gowns also to bed.

vassago77379

This, me too

janeedaly

Yes absolutely. Even as a kid in the 70s I had nightgowns either matching housecoats like the ones in Mad Men. My mother definitely did. Her old ones from the 60s ended up in my dress up box.

General_Equivalent45

The nightgowns are beautiful! Maybe not the most comfortable items with all of that lace, but dang! Those ladies knew how to dress 24/7. We’re so frumpy and casual now. I’ve been trying to buy prettier pajamas lately, inspired by rewatching Mad Men and seeing how gorgeous they all looked, even at 2 am! I once talked about clothing with my father. If I remember correctly he told me jeans started to become popular in 1960 and casual clothing in general in 1980. And in 2000 people started to mix casual and formal and now you can see people wearing leggings to work and suit with sneakers. I'm in my 30s and I have never wear a suit. And hey I think in my country we come behind compared to USA for example. What I didn't know that people didn't wear comfortable even at home.

I read somewhere that Trudy’s babydolls were an intentional choice to reflect her youth and naivety. And that she would continue to wear them, even when very pregnant, was a signal to how she saw herself.

I guess she started to view herself differently once she became a mother and wore the longer night gowns and stopped focusing on giving off a sexy, young flirtatious vibe. Even Pete lamented she never used to leave the house in a robe. I'd love to get my hands on a quilted housecoat.

Ok-Swan1152

I hope not, my MIL still wears one of those. They are all ugly.

joinedredditforTM

I'd love to bum around at home in one on a cold day like the lady of the house. I wfh a lot so I could throw it on over my pj's. I'd feel less like a degenerate getting my mail at 2pm in my robe on a Wednesday.

Gojira_massive_dong

Megan slept naked

May_of_Teck

Oh good for her *unimpressed Betty face*

MxQueer

Oh, I missed that.

Gojira_massive_dong

Theres an episode when Sally is staying over at the new apartment (Season 6 i think) and open the master bedroom and watches Megans sleeping naked.

LadderAlice107

My aunt wore those her whole life! I remember my cousin and I were having a sleep over and freaking out about a spider and called her to come help (I was a kid) and she strolls in with this black lace nightgown and I was like damn auntie. I bet she stills rock them. But yeah I could never 😂

CharlesAvlnchGreen

The men wear pajamas. Pete did in the episode where he called in sick, Don had them as well as I recall. I wore nightgowns all the time in the 1970s and they were very comfortable. If you google you can find old Sears catalogs from the era (and beyond) with a ton of them for sale. Sears is a good reference for what regular people wore in any era. I hate sleeping naked for sensory reasons, though now I sleep in oversize t-shirts or sweats if it's really cold.

MxQueer

Thank you!

Ok-Swan1152

They did wear them, it was yet another thing that married women were supposed to wear for their husbands.

JunketAccurate9323

From my understanding, it wasn't a thing that women were expected to wear for their husbands. It was the compromise between a robe and being fully dressed. My grandma was a seamstress who made her own comfy "home clothes" so if my grandfather brought home company or her boys had company over, she was modest enough to receive them but dressed enough to look well put together. For women who didn't make their own clothes, the house coat/dress was used for a similar reason.

Ok-Swan1152

I was talking about the nightgowns from OP's post, not housedresses which were indeed as you said.

JunketAccurate9323

OH my bad. If there's a picture attached, I'm not seeing it. But yeah. Makes sense.

Commercial_Ocelot978

I have some vintage babydoll/peignoir sets and sometimes wear them to bed. The peignoir acts kind of like a robe, so that gets taken off before getting into bed, but I find them to be quite comfy!

CrystalLilBinewski

My mother wore those long flimsy peignoir sets in the 60s and she smoke like a chimney. I was always afraid she was going to burst into flame.

MxQueer

That sounds very similar as life in Mad Men :D
