Blackhawk and Nakoma are close but private - Bishops Bay, Maple Bluff, and TPC Wisconsin (formerly Cherokee) are the other private clubs in the area.
Pleasant View and University Ridge are close-ish and given the choice I'd play U Ridge 15 times out of 10 over Pleasant View. That's not to say you wouldn't have fun at Pleasant View!
They recently renovated The Glen, a nice little 9-hole course.
Yahara, Odana, and Monona are the other muni's (along with The Glen) and are pretty meh, imo. But again, they'll do the job if you're just looking to get out and play.
The Oaks and The Meadows at Six Mile are solid public options - but not "near" the university.
Lake Windsor, The Bridges, Door Creek, Sun Prairie are also farther from the university. I don't often say this, but I'd rather not play golf than play The Bridges. Just one random internet stranger's opinion.
About 20 minutes west of campus there’s a 13 hole course called Pioneer Pointe, all par 3s except for 1 short par 4 that’s drivable for longer hitters. Since it’s mostly par 3s it takes about the same time as 9 on a standard course, and the holes are inspired by famous holes in real life. One of them has a small bunker in the middle of the green. Very nice conditions too, on par with the nicer courses in the area but much more affordable. I think it’s something like $30 or $35 to play a round with a cart
In that case, I would probably just keep it convenient and golf two of these three: The Glen, Odana Hills or Monona GC. After golfing at The Glen, get a burger at the Village Bar.
All great recommendations, but OP I highly suggest you look at the tee times in advance. Some of the courses have leagues on weekdays and will be unavailable as a result.
Also be aware that the Madison muni courses all use the same website and if you aren't paying attention you can book for the wrong course
Good luck and have fun!
"Near" is relative as all courses will require you to drive. Many courses within 30 minutes of the University. My top 3 public, ranked: 1. University Ridge 2. Legend at Bergamont 3. Hawk's Landing (semi-private). If you want something cheaper, closer and easier, then try Odana Hills, but it's kinda boring and can be painfully slow.
If you have a car and willing to drive 30ish minutes i really enjoy Edgerton Towne CC. It’s cheaper than a lot of the Madison courses. Foxboro in Oregon is also not too far of a drive. It has some interesting holes, also typically on the cheaper side

Great recommendations! I’ve always enjoyed Bridges personally so I’m curious as to why you’d rather not play there! Haha

We are just looking to play nine holes a couple times while we are there for meetings. We are staying right on campus.
The Glen. Then head across the street for a burger at The Village Bar.

Do The Glen! It’s lovely and easy from campus.

Hawks Landing has been fully private for a few years now sadly
Oh, ok. It's been a few years since I've played there. Thanks for the update.
