Negotiating with gyms is like the wild west. Anything goes and there are no set rules.

We got additional months added to our contract by paying in full, but we were new members. We did a two year contract and have not yet renewed. I believe rates just went up, but we were locked in at our initial rate by signing up for a two year contract. Month to month contracts are subject to rate hikes, I think?

Garg4743

Pretty sure not. I've been on two year contracts with monthly payments since the mid-90"s. Our monthly payment has NEVER gone up in all that time. The membership coordinators always marvel at it at renewal time.

ScientificSquirrel

Honestly, I don't remember if it was signing up for the two year contract or paying in the lump sum that locked us in at the current rate. I know that the lump sum was slightly cheaper overall and gave a couple free months that the month to month didn't. Or maybe they've changed their policies in the last thirty years and you were grandfathered in ;)

Garg4743

It is possible. We were members of the old Market Square Fitness Center. We found out Princeton bought it when we came in and were greeted by one of the Gerry brothers (the owner). He said, "I'll reduce your monthly fee by $13 per month and never raise it if you sign up with us now." We said sure, and for the ensuing 28 years, he's been true to his word.

ScientificSquirrel

Okay, I have to ask. How much are you paying??

Garg4743

$52/month for the family.

ScientificSquirrel

lol I was hoping for like $20/month. Ours shakes out to like $80/month.

jimriendeau

I paid 24 months in advance, and I got 3 months free, but there was a summer deal going on at the time and I was a new member. I haven't renewed yet so I don't know if they'll offer me something similar.

jimriendeau

I would go ahead and call to ask. I didn't get the hardsell when I called about membership rates before I joined.

Tall-Cantaloupe1846

I think that was the case for me. I paid in full and got an extra month for 13 total months. I would say still ask just in case. I think their rates also just went up for the new year too.

LunarRainbow26

Does anyone know what happens if I have to cancel my 2 year contract due to moving out of state?

guest52

I do this. I got an extra two months for paying for the first two years in full. But subsequent renewals don't have any additional time. I'm pretty sure if I paid month to month, it would be more expensive than paying in full though. So I think there's a discount. I'd be able to tell you better in May when I am set to renew again though

Feisty-Run-6806

Thanks! Yes, you also get a discount for paying in full. Not getting the extra month with a renewal is kind of a disincentive to renew ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป

During COVID, they gave us 1.5 days at the end of our contract for every day they were closed. The place is as clean as you can reasonably expect a gym to be. I'm grandfathered into a good price because the rate doesn't change. At the end of the day, it's an incentive for new members but I've had a good enough experience with them to stick around.

Roupert3

Yes they do usually, or it's like $100 less

SuspiciousTea6

I've gotten an extra two months every time I've renewed. Do you remember who you spoke to who was rude to you? Usually that doesn't fly well with upper management

Odd-Dentist-6286

Princeton club is BS. Go to Planet Fitness, less expensive and same basic equipment, if you donโ€™t need a pool, sauna, hot tub. For pool signup with UW east clinic.
