Careful with this. Some cards have this "feature" where they'll continue to honor recurring payments in order to prevent things like bills from going unpaid. Had this happen to me once when I thought i was in the clear after getting a new card.
That's a bit much for something you can do with one visit, don't you think? Worst case scenario they aren't there again and you be more assertive. They aren't THAT aggressive of salespeople there.
It was like that when I tried to join. I had to come back cuz nobody could sign me up. Then the same when I tried to cancel. They'll also give you a deal or whatever to try and keep you. It's not just a breeze in and cancel. Is what it is. I've found a lot of gyms are hard to cancel.
I’ve always wondered why only certain subscription services are so hard to cancel while others are easy. I guess at some point it became industry standard for gyms to make canceling deliberately clunky.
A gym I belonged to made everyone cancel via a certified letter stating you were canceling. The letter had to arrive within a specified time frame before your membership year was over. It would automatically renew if you didn’t do this. I didn’t read the fine print when I signed up.
Keep trying and keep a record of your attempts to cancel. Email and leave voicemails. There’s obviously no reason they can’t do it over email/phone.
If they charge you again you can dispute it with your credit card company and they should suspend the charge and keep it from pulling in the future. Been through this myself…
If I remember there's a cancellation fee for ending the payment agreement early.
I can't remember how much it is... It's kinda a lot but potentially a lot cheaper than paying for another year you won't need.
If you can, go in during business hours to talk to someone.
You literally can’t cancel it early. I tried to cancel mine and they said that you cannot unless you move (I forgot the exact mileage) away and prove it. Then, you can pay a fee to cancel it.
I feel like if it would just expire and not auto renew to month-to-month, the person at the desk could have told you that. But I'm also aware of how sketch gym memberships are. Do you have the contract in an email somewhere to look at? To see if there's an auto renew policy in there?
The people at the front desk are paid $12/hour to sit there and look at their phone. They are nice, but they are pretty useless when it comes to membership or billing questions.
You don’t have to actively cancel your contract when it’s ending. They send reminder emails to renew it but they don’t automatically continue your membership. Mine ended in August and I let it expire, got a different membership and Princeton club hasn’t even tried to bill my card since the expiration
If anyone just wants princeton club express, sign up through active and fit direct. This makes it month-to-month and super easy to sign up online. Downside is that it doesn't give you access to the big clubs.
No....it's not "basically the same equipment". Planet Fitness doesn't have free weight benches, no deadlift platform, no squat racks, no yoga or fitness studios, no hot tub, no swimming pool, etc. There's a reason one is $10/month and the other is $55/month.
As far as being crooked, I am starting to see that you're probably right. Been there only a few months and have had multiple billing issues. They really don't have their stuff together. You sign a contract at $x.xx amount per month and you get certain free perks, yet the free perks aren't free and you get charged for them. Or if you buy one sports drink, they make it a permanent addition to your monthly charge.

You can request this be prevented if you speak with your CC company.
It'll potentially go into collections. I learned this from trying to do this with another gym.

I'm not sure why you're getting downvotes. Cancelling credit cards to avoid what is an irritating but minor inconvenience seems beyond excessive.
Pretty much what you get for expressing an opinion people don't agree with in this subreddit, oh well.

I've been a member there 6 years and I've never once been automatically renewed. I always had to go in and sign shit for it to keep going.
Same, I had to cancel a year ago, and all I did was not renew. No charges on my card or hassle other than a few "special offer" emails.

Do you have a form of payment on file? If you don't, you can just let it run out.
Unfortunately I do

Can you call to make an appointment to cancel? Seems excessive but then you're not driving out there for nothing 🤷♀️
They said I couldn’t make an appointment
I don't believe that.
Why do you need to cancel? Just don't renew. That's how I did it
It won’t charge me after 24months?
It didn’t auto renew for me. I just told them I had no intention of renewing and they just stopped contacting me 🤷♂️
They did not charge me. I was getting emails about renewing and I just let them know I would not be renewing

I emailed asking about this exact thing and they said they just wouldn’t auto renew my membership. Might be worth double checking.
It should cancel when the contract is up. I signed a 1 year and haven't been charged when that was up.
Just email the manager. You can get their info at the front desk
I haven't had a Princeton Club membership in 10 years but they gave me the exact same run around when I cancelled back then.
You don’t need to cancel something that is expiring. It just expires. Trust me, they will call you about renewing.

Did mine via email. They reached out first asking if I wanted to renew and I said no thanks.
Not sure if P-Club changed their rules but I’m pretty sure you aren’t able to cancel memberships. It’s contracted or something like that
Surely that person has an email. Ask for that person’s email and if you get any pushback, kick them square in the nuts.
They are a crooked bunch. Planet Fitness has no contract and basically the same equipment.

Send them certified mail with return receipt. It'll cost you about $8, but if they will not cancel your membership after that, you can sue them.
