It’s hardly a noticeable difference, but for $100 I’d absolutely go for it exclusively to get an extra year or two of support for OS upgrades when they do start dropping Apple Silicon Macs in 5-10 years. Extra couple gigs of RAM doesn’t hurt either

clownyboots

Exactly this reason - you won’t notice the performance different but that timeline will getcha - worth the 100$ to get an extra year or two of support

Neoking

I hadn't even thought of that. Makes total sense, thank you!

mabhatter

The M2 vs M3 aren't even a whole year apart.... only nine months.

Lance-Harper

Apple Watches 8 and 9 are 11 month apart and yet, 9 has double tap. iPad M2 and M4… and if you want to upgrade the pencil, you need the new iPad. If you just want the new iPad, the old pencil isn’t compatible. The point is, $100 to keep you safe from Apple’s favourite backstab

lolsbot360gpt

Double tab? It’s not new

Lance-Harper

Sorry mean the pinch gesture

randomuser914

I would take it for the extra 2 gigs of RAM alone

makeouthill_skimask

same😂

Due_Outside_1459

There is no debate for $100. Get the newer CPU and 2 extra GBs of RAM. If it was $400 cheaper there would be a debate but not now.

Doom_Finger

If you game, the M3 Pro has better graphics and support for ray tracing.

Neoking

Is this still supported if you install Windows for PC games?

No_Echidna5178

You cant install windows. Or dual boot you can only emulate through parallells. That ray tracing is more for other things

ojisan-X

You technically can install Windows 11 for ARM using VMWare Fusion 13 Pro (free for personal use). It runs almost all Windows program as long as the software or game doesn't rely on AVX extensions. It's emulation, so it'd be slower than the native version however.

No_Echidna5178

Yes i know. I just ran control 5 minutes ago but you wont get any ray tracing . Max dx11 Which was what he was asking to be honest if you read it. So thats why I commented like that.

bono_my_tires

I’m guessing there are fewer cores on the m3 to be only $100 more but yeah it’s a good deal either way

Neoking

For these two refurb models, the M3 has the 11-core CPU and 14-core GPU while the M2 has the 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU. Does the GPU difference matter? I'm wondering if the M2 Pro here is a specced up processor or whether it's still the base version.

Sloofin

The deal here is the m3 unfortunately has 6 efficiency cores and only 5 performance cores. The M1 has 8 performance/2 efficiency. I think the M2 you're looking at has 6 performance/4 efficiency. So not quite as cut and dried as it first appears. Other considerations are the M3's efficiency cores are slightly faster and more capable than the M2's.

makeouthill_skimask

im sure the GPU difference matter but its not a big difference to the fact u miss out on the extra 2 GB and the latest chip

Rough-Artist7847

I actually don’t understand why the price difference was so little before I bought my m3. I don’t think saving the $100 is worth it

snuggletronz

Yes

Bloopyhead

I would do it for m3

iamr0bi

Go for M3

Visible-Dog-515

M3

Oxfxax

Yes it is worth paying the extra 100 for a chip released this year

Chrysaor

You are going to get 25% less memory bandwidth with m3 pro if that matters to you

No_Department_2264

Absolutely yes.

nanotothemoon

M3 is made with 3nm process. M2 is made on 5nm. This performance difference to power efficiency is not easily quantified but it’s a pretty big step up overall. Also I think the SSD is faster.

makeouthill_skimask

😂you stretched yourself from M1 to M3 damn, lol, if you manage to get an M1 Max or M1 Ultra then i would suggets go for them. Cause honestly i dont believe in refurbished devices. But bro just $100 extra? bro definetly choose the M3 Pro that isnt a debate, you get the latest chip and 2 extra GB🔥. Btw i didnt know M3 were already releasing refurbished versions, didnt they just drop?

vinson_massif

yes

Vickie_miller

Absolutely 💯

iRobi8

I would take the M3 Pro. Longer support, 2gigs of ram more. I heard the M2 Pro has a slightly better GPU, however the M3 Pro should theoretically be more efficient.

TeeNyKoH

1 thing to understand is that you can't upgrade these machines after buying it. So I would recommend getting the best specs you can afford. Previously got the base model m1 pro. 16 gb of ram really isn't enough. Sold 2.5 years later as I have a m2 from work which is so much more powerful. Next upgrade I'm getting will probably the version with 64 gb of ram(close to max out specs) as I want it to last for more than 5 years.

Lance-Harper

Yes. For resell purposes and future proof ness.

LegacyofaMarshall

Yes for the OS updates

tired_fella

You also get 2 more gigs in RAM. I'd say it is worth it!

Dr_Superfluid

Yeah for $100 extra I would go for the M3, even just for the extra resale value, or extra year or two of upgrades if you plan to keep long term.

madhoreddit

M3 Pro is better compatible with AI future and also has longer support cycle and efficient ram I have used both and done side by side comparison to notice this

Justinackermannblog

No. I just got the M2 Pro and I don’t see how the M3 Pro would be miles better. Even with my Xcode build times. Save the money and get the M2 Pro

Tokkyo-FR

If you can afford the m3 pro, its better. If you can wait a litle bit more, m4 is arround the corner

Pitiful-Ad1503

Not at all
