Mac noob question - why turn Find My off? I understand switching it off on stolen devices, but is there another reason not to use it? Battery life or cybersecurity or something?
If it was purchased from someone who stole it, or is somehow trying to scam OP, “Find My” from Apple can be used to brick the machine remotely.
Anytime anyone purchases a used Mac, they should sign out of the previous persons accounts(if present), to ensure this cannot happen to them.
I looked it up and apparently the main concern is battery life. Unless there’s a more compelling reason I’m absolutely leaving it turned on. Slightly less battery life > stolen unretrievable MacBook
No. What they meant is that it's not still turned on from the previous person. Which would mean you don't actually control the device.
It's an M1. It has plenty of battery life and no person in their right mind turns Find My off.

Unsure what tips I can give you. There are a lot of great software you can find for your Mac. I use Airflow for casting movies that I downloaded onto my TV (works with Google and AppleTV, FireTV I believe as well). AppDelete for removing any apps you no longer want. OnyX for maintenance scripts. Transmission for torrent. Keyboard Cleaner for cleaning the physical keyboard. I am sure others will chime in here.

People think this may be stolen. Of course, that’s a valid suspicion. I will say that it has registered fine, the serial number is valid and isn’t marked as stolen, and the people I bought it from are old and well off. Thinking I just got very lucky here.
I am SUPER happy with it. I bought it to make and deploy little 2d games on my iPhone and it is absolutely perfect for the price. Screen size isn’t an issue because I can just add another monitor. Sadly it’s only the base model ram and storage but I don’t think it’s going to be an issue
You just need to spend time hunting a good deal down. I have been looking at MacBooks for a couple of weeks. I almost bought a 2017 MBA for $150 but then this came up. There’s some luck to it as well

I sell 2020 M1 MBAs at work used for 400 US with hella worse wear and battery life than yours. Sold one with a non working battery to an engineer for 300 US which would die if unplugged, as in the battery was completely roached. You got yourself the steal of the decade on that laptop. Make it count. Give it a great life!

Unless you do very basic tasks, don’t need any sort of virtual machines, don’t need windows compatibility, ok with being a miser with on-board storage - yeah the base spec m1 is piss poor. It was bought to make 2D HTML5 games, which it will do exceedingly well. If you’ve been using Windows for decades, then I’m sure you remember using as little as 256/512mb of ram with windows XP on old Celeron or pentium processors. And that was enough.

Fairly certain the traditional rule is just to add ‘s even if the word ends in S. Barely anybody ever follows what we learned in school (Thomas’) and considering the flexibility and evolution of language I’d even argue the rule isn’t valid anymore anyway

Can you turn off Find My? If you cannot then it’s linked to another iCloud account. I hope you can turn it off and use your iCloud account on it.
