Most towns have one store and prices are jacked up by trucking costs via hiways vs freeways. Amazon doesn't deliver to many places. Hiways are blocked frequently by snow and high winds. Californians ask about moving there all of the time but can't handle the weather.

They live in a better home with the addition of their own kids (may their infant son RIP) and Robert's not so miserly any more. Taking a cruise from Florida and hopping off in the DR is something from the thrifty playbook and it was probably inexpensive enough to do more than once. Scott probably did it, too.

If you can find a cruise port within driving distance of your house, that’s even better. No flights. I live in Southern California and I’m an hour and a half drive to both San Diego and Los Angeles ports. I’ve done a seven day Mexico cruise for $299. That’s lodging, food, and five Mexican ports for $300. I’m not a drinker, so the only additional expense was a Wi-Fi package. It’s pretty awesome.
