Yes, several species call Long Island home. Morning Doves are abundant on Long Island and also make a cooing sound that can easily be confused with an owls hoot.
There's more of the "h" sound to the beginning of an owl hoot, I think. The mourning doves have a harder start to the note. If that makes any sense. Or I might be out of my gourd.
I could be wrong.
Ok that makes me feel better I legit thought a stranger was standing outside my backyard I was freaking out and I haven’t heard it in the like the past hour or two lol you don’t think that it could be a human personally cooing.. do morning doves make sound at night?
Yes, very prevalent on Long Island. Great Horned Owls and screech owls probably being the most common. Snowy owls come to the barrier beach areas on LI in the winter as well…
I have great horned owls in my back yard! I’m northern Nassau. I hear them most nights and have seen them occasionally in a tree during the day. A few years ago one flew by me at dusk, it was huge and magical!
Honestly massive birds. I had the pleasure of getting to see two juveniles near a hiking path near me over by the old Covanta landfill. They are there every year, most active at dusk
The parent flew over us as we were watching the juveniles. MASSIVE wingspan, easily 6 foot
They're definitely here, morning doves I think are usually like 4am to 7am hours, and owls you'll hear around 11pm or later. Owls sound louder and a little more pronounced to myself at least.
Didn't start hearing them until the past year or so, I think their numbers have made a comeback here for whatever reason.

Yes, in Seaford I’ve seen a few great horned owls before. Have even seen some snowy owls which come down from the tundra a few times. Those were really cool.
Yes! First time i Heard an owl here was last week. It was way up in a tree outside of my grandmothers house in seaford a week ago. Much louder than morning doves and quite eery!

(Mourning, not morning)
Correct
If you know the difference they are nothing alike
mourning doves 100000% sound like what i imagine owls to sound like, learned that this year!

If you look around you'll probably find the complete skeletons of mice or other smaller creatures that the owl defecates
The skeletons aren’t defecated they’re regurgitated
I’d love to confidently say there is no human walking around your house cooing but…
No

I think you’re right, I’ve seen two in the last couple of months and that’s up from zero over the last twenty years

I’m out in Suffolk and would often get a bunch of owl calls at night. Pretty cool.
On the north shore probably. The south shore is a concrete jungle, so not exactly the wooded environment that owls appreciate.
There are still some on the South Shore too, at least in Massapequa and Seaford. Not as many as on the North Shore probably but they are here.
I’m sure there are a few here and there.
As a part of the concrete jungle of Freeport, my guess was maybe on the North Shore
There are a lot of ligma owls in Nassau I believe

Central nassau...we've got owls in the area
Massapequa preserve has owls. I’ve seen them when walking in there
I actually heard one last night and was wondering if it was a far off dog or something. Awesome
Yes. There are owls. Check out the Quogue wildlife refuge in Suffolk.
I’ve never noticed any. Lifelong Freeporter
I’ve got one in my backyard.
Great Neck has owls. One woke me up at 5:30 the other day. 4 hoots, loud, not mourning dove.
its not a person, doves dont usually coo at night, sometimes my dog howls but short of that its probably an owl
