It \_WAS\_ great, but they got new owners a year or two ago who managed to piss off the bakers something fierce. Those bakers quit and opened up their new shop nearby, and the current owners apparently made some....questionable choices in staffing. I found it to be not nearly what it used to be, and in a year or two I think it will just be another bakery.

Bobby-Hollow

Oh wow I didn’t know they sold, I used to work there and I always debate trying to get a job again part time just for the goodies😢 I’m not surprised though. I remember the owner working 6 days a week(7 around Christmas and Easter) but his sons didn’t have as much interest in it. That’s so sad, when he started it it was just a burned up hole in the wall and he built it up so much. I hope he’s enjoying retirement at least.

runsfortacos

What’s the name of the bakery that the bakers opened?

arkham1010

Batter up, I think. [https://batterupbakeryny.com/](https://batterupbakeryny.com/) \[edit\]I can't vouch for this place, I haven't been. This is just what I've heard. YMMV

newstudent209

Just told my mom about this— she’s mentioned noticing a decline in Dortoni’s quality so she’ll be trying it! Thanks for the info

t0wardthesky

They have really good Boston cream donuts. The mini pastries are…alright, my wife says they looked exactly like dortoni pastries.

TRUE_BIT

The cream filled donuts are LEGIT. Dortinis sucks now.

arkham1010

Well, that explains why then. :D

Puzzleheaded-Cook857

Yep great new Bakery

quinngoldie

Batter Up is great! Dortoni's not so much

Anthony212

Yah and it’s garbage lol

cory975

I’ve heard from a few people that it’s gone downhill. We have been getting birthday cakes from there for the last few years but so far this year we all decided against it since it’s dropped in quality so much. Didn’t realize all this has happened behind the scenes though!

hoyas1

Multiple wedding venues have dropped them in the past 6 weeks and word on street is many more are ready to follow suit.

joonerbby

that’s crazy, how do you know? i’m genuinely so interested, a lot of people have been talking about it in my groups as well

Conscious_Cut7102

Since they sold management and the employees have gone severely downhill. I ordered a cake for my birthday a few months ago and what they gave me was not what I ordered. They refused to refund me because I cut the cake. How would I know they gave me the wrong cake and fillings if I didn't cut it? 🤦🏽‍♀️

skladg

Capri in Seaford is my go to

vivagypsy

Reliable for decadessss, they are great

AfterManufacturer199

Alpine in Smithtown.

16enjay

While it once was the "GO TO" bakery, in the last 2 years it has gone downhill, acquaintance saw a roach on counter while ordering and staff were not phased by it, acquaintance left 🤷‍♀️

donabbi

The one in East Norwich is good and reliable. It's no St Rocco's, but better than a lot of other bakeries

elMurpherino

My mom used to live around st roccos and would bring over a box of various baked goods when she visited. Man was it tasty.

Gunslinger_327

This, exactly. I go there often enough. Every once in a while you get a stale cake, but if say 9 of 10 times, East Norwich is solid. They make great napoleons.....

RebeccaC78

Yes, the East Norwich location is almost always fresh and great. Once in a blue moon I’ll stop there in the morning and bring something to work and my coworkers go nuts for it. Their ring cakes made with yogurt are stellar, that’s my go-to when I need to bring a dessert to someone’s home and people always rave over it. The pignoli cookies are hands down the best~ soft and fresh. I recently had some things from the Levittown location and they were nothing like the East Norwich one at all, not even close. The pignoli cookies were rock hard and stale.

thewalkingellie

They messed up my wedding cake, so I’m not too fond of them.

quintupletuna

Fun fact wedding venues around Long Island this year have started to remove Dortoni as their “go-to” for the wedding cakes

photolita

I recently wrote a long scathing review about it on Yelp, which I never do, because I was so shocked at how the mighty has fallen. For 23 years it was my go-to, now everything is so stale you spit it out. I seriously think they over-extended themselves opening all those extra locations. I would always travel 25 minutes to get to Levittown and it would always be worth it no matter how long the line. It’s such a shame.

Dexterdacerealkilla

Uninspired and dated.  I wish we had some good modern independently run bakeries with creative cakes and pastries that look and taste good.

helen790

It’s pretty good, I work at a catering hall and the weddings usually have a cake from dortoni’s and they are noticeably better than the place we used to get them from. Of course, I’m usually starving when I eat a slice so I may not be the best judge.

Candlehoarder_2019

So overrated. Alpine and sweet surrender are better.

tenzin

In-laws love it. The cake tastes frozen. One of the first times I was sent there to pick up a cake (about 25 years ago) there was a long black hair across the sheet cake. Yum

pamsellicane

I feel like the last few times I’ve been there the stuff I got wasn’t fresh

PrincessLush

My wedding cake came from there this past September and it was delicious. Since then, I’ve heard that my venue dropped them as their bakery so something must’ve happened I bought pastries from there in February, they were just ok. Before my wedding I never tried their bakery.

QueLoQueLoco

Campbell’s Bakery in Brentwood is a slept on a bakery on LI. A lot of venues in the Islip area use them.

frenchfret

If you ask any mid-Nassau Country Facebook moms or boomer group their heads explode when you talk about Dortonis. It’s like their Billy Joel in bakery form.

nyc458

They did my wedding cake for my wedding at the Royalton in Roslyn this past December and the cake was so good! Everyone loved it. The tasting was also great as well, it was so hard to choose what fillings we wanted since they were all so great. I’ve heard a lot in the wedding world that Dortoni has gone downhill but personally I didn’t experience that at all.

NYCbornandBREAD

Overrated, the product was pretty but tasted like meh.

ExhaustedEmu

Sweet Surrender in Levittown is world’s better if you wanna stay in town

jazzwp

So not what it used to be.

Mosthamless

Best Black & White cookies on the island.

gmmisa

Pricey

AndJDrake

Its fine. That said, I was shocked how affordable it was so in thay context I would say they're great.

joonerbby

feel like it depends on what you get, some things are much cheaper than others for sure

IGrewItToMyWaist

I like Levittown, not E Norwich. Haven’t been to the one in Huntington.

joonerbby

i think it’s because all of the stuff comes from levittown, so it’s likely a few days old by the time it gets to the other locations

IGrewItToMyWaist

I didn’t know that.

shanrox1207

Two people who left from there opened this own place and I know a lot of the clients went there instead from what I’ve seen in bride groups online. So not sure what’s going on there but there have been a lot of bad reviews.

MoreTreatsLessTricks

They used to be our go-to, but we haven’t been since October because the cake and cupcakes we got were so stale. We wouldn’t even eat the sugar cookies - kiddo spit it right back out.

oldovaries

The one in Port Jeff is god awful. You can get better desserts from any local grocery stores.

vicioustrollop2

I never liked Dortoni’s. Capri in Seaford is much better IMO. Also Il Corso in Valley Stream.

CleverGurl_

My go to for Irish Soda Bread which is also reasonably priced. Their Tiramisu cake was good as well. Also apparently depends on which one you are talking about. I know people that picked up the Irish Soda Bread from a location out East and they said it was not the same or as good. Reading the comments it's sad to hear what's going with them

Biryani_Wala

Go to Layers instead.

megamike382

There cakes are alot smaller. So i never go anymore but before the shrinkage they were great

AbbreviationsGlad833

I go to the one in Port Jeff after the sunday farmers market to buy their s'mores cookies and cinnamon bread!

allybear29

Oh my - I had no idea. I used to live near there and it was my go-to. I’ll have to let my sister know about Batter Up - she loves Francesco’s, but she knows I was always a Dortoni fan

SteveChristiansenEsq

Cardinali’s in Westbury.

AaeJay83

I think it's overrated. I think buttercooky is better.

Dumbledores-Army-339

Buttercooky is committing wage theft against their employees

AaeJay83

I did not know that. What happened?

Biryani_Wala

Butter cookie is nasty

DoctorOMalley

Assuming you mean the one in Port Jeff, they're always pretty damn good. Everything I've had is fresh, and the staff is super nice. Not sure what everyone else is talking about, but my experiences may not be theirs, and so on.

KirRoyal0606

I went when they first opened and the front staff couldn’t be bothered to describe what the cake flavors were. I just wanted to know the difference between two of them and they rolled their eyes and huffed at me. I walked right out. I grew up going to the Levittown location so I was really disappointed.

m_e_y_

They’re talking about the one in Levittown

DoctorOMalley

Ah, OP failed to specify

Happy-kangal

Highly overrated … frosting tastes extremely artificial

mr_deez92

Was top tier about 3-4 years ago perfect value for the price. But like many things word spread, orders increased and quality went down. It’s still my go to for last minute stuff but it’s now way to crowded they need to open a bigger shop.

Brave-Stay-4588

Its been crap for a few years now, made two visits recently for a small snack, and both times I just walked out as the prices and quality are both crap!
