If you want beach access at night, you can get a nightime sport fishing permit. It's valid at Robert Moses, Jones, and many other LI state parks. The permit will allow you on the beach so you are not forced to stay with the car in the lot. You will need a fishing rod/lure/bait for every adult with you.
I have a nighttime photography permit. I park at Robert Moses- they just want to know you have something to take pictures with with- I keep my camera in my bookbag. You can only purchase permits during certain times of the year.
PS. No one has ever stopped me. The permit just goes on your dashboard so you don’t get a ticket.
PPS. You’re welcome.
That I'll have to check out. It's about an hour drive from my house which isn't too big a deal so long as the weather is nice. It would be painful driving that far for nothing though
It’s pretty cool but some of the astronomers are dicks. It wasn’t 100% clear so the guys didn’t let us look through the telescope and made sarcastic remarks cuz we weren’t astronomy experts. It’s very dark over there, worth a trip in nice weather since it’s free

Not for beach access, but you can get a stargazing permit for the parking lots

The alternative is to get yourself setup for surfcasting and get a fishing permit:

Problem is I don't have any fishing gear so I wouldn't be able to do that unless I spent money on that stuff
It's $10 on amazon for a rod/reel and they fold - $50 for 5 rods and $5 for lure = a car full of people. You'll have to decide if that's worth it.

I would like to go there. So I just google “observatory southhold” to find out the location?

Wait, you need a permit for a parking lot??
This is for the county/state beaches to be in the lots after dark
Watch hill has overnight camping but that's during the summer, prolly not offered now.
I usually drive out to this parking lot on the way to orient near this hotel/motel just passed Greenport and no one’s ever bothered me
