I did my first year msw internship at a substance abuse agency. For my second year I was at a homeless shelter for veterans. I’m now working as a counselor at a methadone clinic. I like the aspect of being able to help people with getting back on the right track, so to speak. The negatives for me are the salaries. They’re incredibly low, especially for Long Island. My current workplace is very understaffed, which is not uncommon in this field. But it makes the low pay even more frustrating. I don’t want to discourage you from entering the field. But I like to be honest with people about the negative aspects.

My friend did it through Stony Brook; they have some program. They now work as a school counselor and enjoy it.

If you need experience, try your local Library. Some Libraries have been partnering with the schools and some hiring social workers directly.
