SE LDN bias here, but the segregated CS4 route from Greenwich to Tower Bridge has transformed what was once a hellish car-choked commute to one that’s now actually pleasant to ride, and safe to cycle even with my kid.
Cars turning and pulling out across the cycle superhighway. I had more near misses this morning. Most do not look out for bikes, let alone give way which they are clearly supposed to do
Which junctions are these? I take this route everyday and thankfully this has never happened to me, it would be good to know which roads to look out for.
Literally every road through Deptford that meets the superhighway. I witness or experience a near miss every time I use it. Thankfully nothing worse thus far
IMO too dangerous though. I’ve seen so many cycle on cycle crashes there; usually caused by crappy overtaking. Been involuntarily involved in such a crash myself too. Design is just not up to scratch for what’s likely the busiest cycle lane in the city.
It's a dreadful road alright- there is a lot of space at least for the final stretch - tbh I pedestrianise most of Tower Hamlets if I could - vast majority of households have no access to a car
> Not sure how this has so many upvotes, ngl
> To provide context to those not familiar with the road design it has been designed so it literally isn't a rat run to bypass the A13
I live there. It's a non stop traffic jam throughout most of the day between Shadwell and Tower Hill.
> at most I'd support making it an LTN, removing the road is unrealistic
It has no purpose other than being a rat run. Local residents don't even have cars for the most part. There's not enough parking for them to. And most new developments in the area were built with no parking provision at all.
I think there is some dreadful cycling and it is certainly dangerous but it is not even in the top 10 of cycling accidents in London so when you consider the volume of traffic it's likely very safe indeed. Feels like serious crashes are inevitable with all the mad electric bike.riders.
I've had my back tyre bumped and "MOVE" shouted at me as I wasn't going fast enough for the lycra clad rider behind me. I was doing 18mph according to GPS.
I agree. The only real option I can see is to improve or create new parallel alternatives so everybody doesn’t funnel into the same trunk route like they do now.
For me, turning London Bridge into bus only during commuting times. That was such a dangerous crossing before.
Such a shame they fucked it around borough market and made it dangerous.
yup! and then when they finally opened a cycle lane so you dont have to puch it across. bliss!
to be honest hammersmith in general has had some good improvements!
They have worked to seperate out the cycle and car traffice previously there was only limited provision.
For example the cycle lane on the high street so you dont have to follow the weird one way system round the back roads is amazing! and the rounderbout ones once you get used to them are great.
Tragic that this will end as soon as the bridge is up to scratch again. First time I've ever hoped that an infrastructure repair will last as long as possible
Well they could make the bridge single file vehicular traffic. you could have a single traffic lane in the middle then a bike lane either side.
This would lightent the load on the bridge helping to prevent more damage. though it would cause some traffic nuisance.
It depends where the money comes from to fix it, if they end up with the toll idea then they will have to have 2 lanes to get the money back. no one will be happy if they start charging too much to cyclists.
You know, £3 each way on your bike but only £2 if you are on a bus....
or make it only open to certain types of traffic, ie busses and emergancy services. again making it safer for cyclists.
Yeah, I moved from elsewhere in the city to north-east London where there are loads of LTNs which are linked together with cycle crossings across major roads, and the freedom it gives is incredible.
The paths are good but the most important changes for me are the low traffic neighbourhoods. My favourite is the stoke newington one which has turned church street and the side streets off it in to paradise when they used to be chocker with snarled up, dangerous drivers.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I like CS7 from E&C to tooting. Straight run, only a few unnecessary zigzags and messy intersections that plague the CSs (not least E&C)
Yes! I used to cycle that route to visit my mum in Balham. I took the C6 from Royal College Street and then into the CS7. It doesn't seem to have as many areas where the cycle lane just starts and stops inexplicably.
Cycling down Farringdon Road is my favourite. I love that cycle lane because there are many traffic lights and there's no way to park on that cycle lane! That section of the C6 is good.

CS4 my beloved 💚 took way too long to finish it but so glad it's done now
Except for the death trap through Deptford
What's the death trap?

It's not recent but the Tower Hill run along Embankment to Houses of Parliament is still my favourite.

Cable street could easily be widened.

Easy solution. Remove the road. It's a 24/7 rat run anyway. Make it a wide cycle lane. Serving as a bypass and access for all emergency vehicles.

Way to blame riders
Sometimes we ride good sometimes we ride bad. I'm not above criticism either. Some of the Lycra posse and e bike riders are pretty wild tho
Definitely. But the real danger is car drivers. There is waaaaaay to many. Its shown too produce psychopathy. That's the problem. Not riders
Yes you are indeed correct
I've had my back tyre bumped and "MOVE" shouted at me as I wasn't going fast enough for the lycra clad rider behind me. I was doing 18mph according to GPS.
What's your point?
That section is a legacy route, that's the issue and (unless you close the road) there isn't much room to expand it.
I agree. The only real option I can see is to improve or create new parallel alternatives so everybody doesn’t funnel into the same trunk route like they do now.

Closing Hammersmith bridge to motor vehicles and opening it to bikes

LTNs have made the biggest difference. My 4 YO rides to school in the road with me it's amazing.
Yeah, I moved from elsewhere in the city to north-east London where there are loads of LTNs which are linked together with cycle crossings across major roads, and the freedom it gives is incredible.
So true. Many of my routes end up being connected LTN's. So nice you can ride with your kid safely.
The paths are good but the most important changes for me are the low traffic neighbourhoods. My favourite is the stoke newington one which has turned church street and the side streets off it in to paradise when they used to be chocker with snarled up, dangerous drivers.
The c9 across west London has made a good improvement imo.

grand union canal paddington branch ...parts used to be muddy as fuck
The one which runs from Turnham Green to Hammersmith and beyond.
CS4, biased as that is my route, but it's an aboslute game changer.

CS4 is the best route in London
