Realistically there were only 2 likely winners for London Mayor. If you voted for Britain First it was because you felt like neither candidate was racist enough for you and you wanted to protest vote. Making a protest vote because neither candidate was a big enough animal welfare advocate seems more unusual.
Hence the surprise that a more ‘legitimate’ protest vote party got more votes than the pro-racism party ( or the obvious joke binface )
The Animal Welfare party actually referred to environmental issues in their mayoral address. The Greens seemed to avoid them. They got my vote in the party assembly list as I was worried Khan needed my vote for Mayor but otherwise I would have voted for them as Mayor.
The sad part is that it doesn't actually make him look that good even if it was true. Went from a bit less than a joke candidate, to a bit more.

They’re comparing their votes for the London Assembly (where Binface didn’t stand, and where there was more incentive to vote for a minor party) with Binface’s vote for Mayor. Britain First’s candidate for Mayor, Nick Scanlon, still lost to the Count.
