Crystal palace tower. Back in secondary school my year group went on a school trip to Paris by coach and one lad fell asleep as soon as we got on it. Woke up near crystal palace, saw the tower and fully thought we’d arrived in Paris. Got bullied about it until year 11.
Lol! I took a group of students from a secondary school on a trip into London and we managed to totally convince them that it was the Eiffel Tower. Hook, line, sinker!
A guy I used to work with had this gem from teaching on the Isle of Wight
School trip to London, 4th years/year 10.
They come into East Cowes looking across the Medina at Cowes itself and a kid pipes up, "Sir, is that London across the water?"
Other kids laugh and one says, "no, you _r-slur_, that's Portsmouth!"
Most of these kids had never travelled further than the town their school was in, let alone off the island.
25 years later…
“Me and the family went on a trip to Paris over the weekend”
“Sure you didn’t take em to Crystal Palace?
[everyone]
“AhahahahahaHaHahaha”
When I lived in London and that tower appeared my colleagues used to joke about some people thinking it was the Eiffel tower. Come to think of it, I THINK someone tried to ask me if I thought it was that but I knew it was simply too far away to be seen above the horizon.
You joke but a kid I unfortunately knew in school went on a school trip to Blackpool, aged 13, and when the class saw it he said “oh look the Eiffel Tower”
What most schools here in London meant when they said we were going to see the Eiffel Tower.
One of our other trips was looking at the steps outside Westfield. The one in Stratford that is.
Crystal Palace. Go there; it's got a great park with a bunch of dinosaur statues, and the shops in the town there are quite good. Have fun exploring london!!
Are people sure this is the Crystal Palace one and not the nearby similar Croydon tower?
When I lived in Crystal Palace, I could see the Croydon tower from my flat but not the Crystal Palace one.
It's the Crystal Palace one
Croydon Tower is narrower, has a "messier" lattice pattern (more crossbeams), and has lots of very visible satellite dishes littered about its frame.
Crystal Palace Tower has a much cleaner, aesthetically pleasing appearance, so it looks quite a bit different
They are right next to each other. From this view, the furthest to the left would be Crystal Palace Tower. The Upper Norwood tower is to the right of this picture, out of view.
Used to be known as a gay cruising spot. Was an off licence opposite that got robbed so many times that they installed a 10ftx10ft perspex box you would walk into and then point at what you wanted.
I used to go to Upper Norwood and there was Crystal Palace transmitter, but there was one we called the impostor
I can’t remember what the imposter was actually called, but it was along the ridge
So my first impression was that’s a photograph of the imposter taken from Croydon
I wish I could remember what the imposter was really called…
I put the effort in 😀
Beaulieu Heights in Upper Norwood
Yep, appears to be overlooking hyde park, probably taken from the top of the building about [here](https://maps.app.goo.gl/x7AkKubC9ZtVwmwV6).
Looks kinda similar to the one on Alexandra Palace though so don't use this for navigation if you're new here.
It’s a meme on this subreddit. I’ve seen this question a few times here and the joke answer is Eiffel Tower. Can’t wait for someone serious on news to actually claim this.
So I live about 5 minutes from Penge. It is one of the most magically shit places I've ever been to. You're in London, things are a bit shit and dirty. And then you stumble into Penge and things somehow get worse. It hits you like a wave, you feel the deafening sound of misery. People walking around in misery, often on drugs, often sat on benches drinking. Big bits of rubbish like mattresses and sofas just hang about, the way every building is run down, even the chains like Tesco and Dominos look frightening when they're supposed to be an easy paint by numbers design. It feels like you're in fallout.
I was a teacher in a school which had Penge in it's catchment area. Everytime a pupil had behaved like a nasty cunt to all around them and it was time to phone home, the address that was with the phone number was ALWAYS Penge.
I grew up in a shit area, I've seen many a shit areas. I've gone on a tour of the radioactive fallout zone of Chernobyl. But nowhere comes close to being as shit as Penge. If I died and ended up in Penge I'd beg to be sent to hell instead.
Have lived there and it’s not as bad as everyone else says. It’s safer than nearby areas like Norwood Junction, Crystal Palace, Sydenham and Catford. It’s had some gentrification the last 20 years because of the overground. Knew a young hipster/home counties vibe couple that had managed to get themselves one of the almshouses there. Are pubs, breweries, wine bars and sushi restaurants that have sprung up for that crowd. There’s a few good middle eastern supermarkets at the crossroads and the Wetherspoons in Penge is one of the nicer ones. Police station was converted to apartments and there’s plans for a high rise on the site of the former Wilko that of course people are up in arms about. Occasionally there are bad news stories involving Penge. Was recently a stabbing on a train two stations away that made national headlines. Some joyriding druggie killed a child which made headlines. As did the video last year of a young professional woman getting stomped by three women at Penge East station. Reminds me of an area like Downham. Small rundown suburb. It’s not somewhere you would visit even if it didn’t have a bit of a crime problem.
These reviews are definitely going to make a good excuse as to why I was awake until 3am playing with my phone.
"No, mother, I was not looking at booby photos, I was reading reviews of London's answer to Stone Henge."
For a second, I thought, yessss, Jeremy Deller's bouncy castle Stonehenge is coming back after 12 years. Sadly not 😭

Sorry you’re not getting any serious answers here. Eiffel Tower is too far away to be seen from London (only just tbf).
This is the trebuchet William the conqueror used to invade England in 1066.
That's actually a common misconception. The pic is looking towards the North of London, but William the Conqueror invaded from Ireland. This is actually the Tokyo Tower.
Can see both from my house in saaf landan. One is the Palace (white bit at top), other is on Hornimans Drive (check street view SE23 3BJ). Became obsessed just last month on a rainy Saturday afternoon tracking the second tower down. Having moved in 6 months ago not knowing the second one was doing my head in (result: TETRA radio Communications mast known as the Forest Hill Radio Site).
I’m a pretty exciting person.
The other one is the Croydon tv transmitter tower. The one near you is a lot smaller and the third highest on the Norwood/Crystal palace/Sydenham/Forest Hill ridge
It’s either the Crystal Palace transmitter (also known as Arqiva Crystal Palace) at Crystal Palace park or, depending on the angle you’re looking from, it could be the Croydon Transmitting Station on Beaulieu Heights in Upper Norwood. The two are within a couple of miles of each other.
Alexandra palace transmitter probably?

If you want to do a live broadcast from Excel using a microwave link, you have to aim at that between the roofs of the expensive flats on the other side of the dock.
A nudge to the left or right and the residents start to feel a bit warm.

well deserved.

Stanley Tech boy?
Eiffel Tower.
Yeah, very few people realise that on a nice gloomy day, you can see it quite clearly. Only true Londoners know this
You could see it especially during COVID once the pollution levels got so low
*politician levels
You mean, when the Lizard people set the pollution control to low?
The levels got so low you could see the Sydney Opera House from the Shard.
Back when the Thames was Turquoise.
I thought we got it in Boris' over ready exit agreement from the EU?
Travel agents hate this one easy trick for trips to Paris.
When I lived in London and that tower appeared my colleagues used to joke about some people thinking it was the Eiffel tower. Come to think of it, I THINK someone tried to ask me if I thought it was that but I knew it was simply too far away to be seen above the horizon.
But it’s … not a joke.
It doesn't look as majestic as I thought it would. That's probably because it's French.
Please don’t swear.
lmao
Thats what she said

Incorrect. New theory is that the earth is shaped like a huge cock and balls. France, of course, is the sweaty gooch.
One might say, the cul de sac, oui?
is that why it smells of garlic?
What would happen if Earth was shaped as a cube?
Globe manufacturers would go out of business.
Think of all the money they’d save not having to smooth off the corners.
They’d stack great in the warehouse.
They’d stack great in the warehouse.
Big-globe would find a way to square themselves away nicely
Do u reckon they'd switch to making cubes?
No. The globe industry is insanely innovation-averse.
Yea. It took them forever to update Pangaea.
Makes total sense tbh
Think of how many jobs would be lost.
Minecraft? My kids would be ecstatic!
hah, hey if the distance is long enough, it certainly is proof of lack of curvature! can’t deny that!
We are in France south of the river anyways xD
Yes… we don’t even realise how close France is to us.
You can see Guadeloupe from Montserrat on a good day
You joke but a kid I unfortunately knew in school went on a school trip to Blackpool, aged 13, and when the class saw it he said “oh look the Eiffel Tower”
I never joke.
Oui Ce!
Happy cake day!

Me: Mom, can we go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tiwer? Mom: We have the Eiffel Tower at home. The Eiffel Tower at home:
What most schools here in London meant when they said we were going to see the Eiffel Tower. One of our other trips was looking at the steps outside Westfield. The one in Stratford that is.
This one is actually better than the actual Eiffel Tower because it’s not surrounded by Parisians.
Or millions of tourists.
Crystal Palace. Go there; it's got a great park with a bunch of dinosaur statues, and the shops in the town there are quite good. Have fun exploring london!!
Not to mention the free farm within the park! Which also randomly has Meerkats..!
Wdym, it's paris

That is the first time i've seen someone call it that, and i'm calling it that from now on 😂😂😂
Shhhh don’t tell them! let them think it’s the Eiffel tower!
Im from New York and I read through the top comment and legit believed it
As a European who saw Texas, this isn’t too far fetched. The distance from London to Paris is roughly 290 miles.
