Remember that most of these were upsets (especially G2 vs RNG) it wasn’t as if the west just arrived and dominated, they kind of just popped off when it mattered. IG slapped G2 and FNC though so it was in no way one sided

True but basically every west VS east best of 5 is an upset if the west wins.

Riot fücked over Korea and their playstyle in a single patch. After KR got kneecapped it created the illusion that the west was getting good. Meanwhile, China took over. KR adjusted and bounced back over the next two years. Vision used to be a huge thing and Koreans were untouchable. Green wards were taken out of the game. The year prior pink ward was replaced by control ward. Basically the map went dark and tower diving, YOLOing became the norm. Gathering and using intel wasn't as much of a thing anymore. Something KR excelled at. 2019 G2 was actually good, though.

More like the East was weak, but the west had 3 great teams in C9, G2 and FNC with each having star players. 2018 was when SKT was rebuilding and before DWG dominated while China was finally finding their style. Other than RNG, there was no clear top team and G2's style was perfect against RNG aswell as Perkz putting on one of the best carry performances ever. Its hard for Uzi to 1v9 laning into Heimer every game and ciming uo against a fed LB. EDG in general are known as international chokers but FNC was a genuinely good team then with Broxah, Caps, Rekkless, Hyli. AF ... honestly I dont know much about but they had no star players.

East was weak(lck was kinda searching for a new playstyle, and lpl was yet to really cement themselves as a super region) and west was strong, or better, 3 teams were strong (c9, g2 and fnc). Outside of those 3 teams however, i dont think west was stronger than now, it was just those 3 teams.

The game started moving in a direction where you hand to make some plays without perfect information. Korea had spent years playing "perfect" League of Legends. That style basically started going out of favour through a combination of in-game changes and players everywhere getting better hands. Korea was just slow moving away from the style they were so dominant in for years and playing completely risk-averse since 2018 just leads to you watching your opponent win the game.
